Hi all,

I have a dilema...
I have been booked as a silhoutte portrait artist at a Beverly Hills party. The theme of the party is a Disney Halloween. This is right up my alley. I worked at Disneyland back in the mid 70's doing portraits. I am required to wear a themed costume. Because of my build, in male mode, I could pass as Bert the chimney sweep or Icabod Crane... However my deepest desire would be either Malificent (the witch from sleeping beauty) or the evil queen from Snow White.

This is my first high society gig. As such I am torn between my gender choices for the event. Athough I know my appearance will be buffered by the fact it is "just" a costume, I do not wish to affect my acceptance. This could lead to other events in this circle.
The party is the 29th of October and we will be on the road on Halloween going home to Idaho.

My question to you is:

Should I wimp out and color between the lines? Or perhaps just doll myself up for the drive home? Or should I throw caution to wind and go for it all?

Only you know how this group will receive you if you dressed up...do what your gut tells you.....have fun...let us know what you decide.

If your choice of costume could affect how much money goes in your pocket in the future, I would have to recommend a conservative approach. A tasteful, well-made costume of some male Disney character is more likely to generate future invites. You can always change to something feminine for the rest of the evening after you leave.

I love the photo. I'll bet there's an interesting story about that experience.

Is there someone responsible for the party you could ask about costumes? Perhaps, the one who hired you. Because it would be a shame if you found out afterwards you could have dressed. BTW, checked out your website. Love the pics. And welcome to our little corner of the T world.

Looking at your picture, I see that you went en fem at your school where your were teaching. If this new group knows of that school even and is not upset with it, then I say why not go as a witch, otherwise I would say go as a male character and later when you get ready to drive home, change.

Also it would not hurt to inquire about the costumes before hand.

Come on............it's California. The place where we all get to suspend our beliefs, even if it's only for a little while. I think if you did it in a really theatrical way people would love it. Looking at the pic of you I think you would make a great Snow White, forget the witch and be the good girl <g>

I would suggest a fem costume, but one that kids won't be afraid to approach. Witches and evil queens would scare some away.

Why not sleeping beauty?

Why don't you go as Snow White or Cinderella?

Jodi,

The main reason I don't is I am 50 and like all fab divas of a like age I have resigned myself to more matronly roles. Both my choices are more age appropriate and visually stunning. (Side note: Did you know the evil queen was patterned after Joan Crawford?) Besides with over a 100 guests there will be plenty of "vintage" GG Snows and Cindys... and I would die of embarrassment if someone else at the party was wearing the same dress.

JoAnne,

I have a letter out to the party planner today, I posed the questions so many of you suggested. I will keep you girls informed.

I am not out at the school. Over the years I have donned many costumes. I have been Robin Hood, Dracula, The blue Power Ranger among others. I wear a tuxedo the last day of school because that is any child's third most important day of the year, after Christmas and their respective birthdays. My "girl costume" is the one I am constantly reminded of at this time of year by staff and students. However, if I am strongly suspected I would have heard of it from my friends there. Besides, I am 879 miles from Beverly Hills.... I doubt word would have gotten to them unless I was betrayed by Iatola Hinckley's American Taliban.
