Hey girls, I guess I have spent too much time reading the posts about shopping. Where until recently, I might purchase one or two items a year at a thrift shop, never trying on, since I am still in the closet, I have recently gotten braver. A couple weeks ago, I purchased a denim skirt at Ross. When I got up the nerve to try it on the SA didn't bat an eye. Yesterday I had some time between appointments so stopped by the nearby mall. I found a nice and soft cardian sweater. I went to try it on and again I hardly got a glance from the SA. Next to Macy's, where I found a very nice blouse and some shapewear. So $60 later... It was a lot of fun. Hum, I haven't tried shopping for shoes yet...

Not that I'm FORCING you but,.....check out Payless. They've got some great shoes, and the girls there don't care what you try on, just BUY something. Nine West is another nice store, only problem there is that any "larger" sized shoes go quickly so you have to keep looking.

How well I can identify with the title of this thread.

Even if I had permission to dress and go out at night I couldn't,.....I'm broke. $pent all my money on $hopping.

Thanks for the tips Phyliss. I can see how this could get to be a very expensive habit. It could also make the the question of storage even more difficult to those of us who are not "out"

Phyliss is so right about Payless - I wear a 12W so its hard to find shoes. I've found a number of pairs there and there is never any issue with the clerk. In fact, three weeks ago she suggested a pair of pantyhose! I bought them but frankly, the quality is marginal. I've had better luck at Penneys. Just for fun, check out Payless on the internet. You can shop by size and get a sense for what they have that will fit and be the style you like. (Only heels for this girl!)

I cant seem to stop buying stuff from Fredericks of hollywood! It seems like everyweek they have something I want on sale or free shipping or something and then $100 later, I'm back to buy more. :)

Love KarrenI can help you gals there. I used to be an exterminator. Got a "special" method for dealing with it. It's called "plastic surgery"(for your credit card) and the main tool is a pair of scissors. Ericka

I track all my expenses with Quicken, and seeing this thread I was afraid to but did it, had the software track all the purchases Kristen has made in the year to date. Much if this was bought on sale and clearance, but I needed to replace all that I had purged 2 years ago, wigs, forms, and shoes, the lot. The total was over $3000 dollars, 3 times what I spent on male clothes, as I am typing this I am on my way out to go shopping, but you have to have the right shoes to go with that new outfit you bought.

The shopping bug will kill you !!!!!!!. Seems like I can't ever go shopping without at least looking at cloths or makeup or shoes. Stopped at wal-mart tonight to get my son some juice and some meds for my wife and a few other thing. Ended up getting thoses things plus a new bra and a package of panties, GIGGLES

I can't say too much, we spent over $600 on one ocasion and then I spent over $200, all this at Lane Bryant, my favorite store...BJ

Oh my. Lane Bryant. They make it too easy. Had about 1/2 hour to kill on Thursday before an appt. so I stopped into L.B. to say hi to a S.A. that I know, had no intention of buying anything, (really). Walked out with four tops.

Fashion Bug is also a place where it has become too easy to spend money.

Not that I'm FORCING you but,.....check out Payless. They've got some great shoes, and the girls there don't care what you try on,

Yeh, the gals at Payless will cheerfully tell you to "Try back on Mondays and Thursdays, that's when we get our shipments."

I think I've got a real "Love/Indifference" relationship with Payless.
The clerks give a friendly Hello when you walk in, and can sometimes be found wandering around the isles. If they happen to pass by you, they'll ask you if you need any help, which half the time is code for "I have other things to do, but I don't want you to feel that you can never find a clerk." If you do happen to go when the place only has a couple of customers, then Yes, the clerks will kindly point out all the shoes they don't have in your size, and alternately say, "You could try one of our other stores" or "Try back on Monday". It isn't that the clerks are bored stiff and hate you; it is "not-unfriendly" impersonal service from people who don't really know a lot about shoes, don't know the stock particularily well, and who have little control over what is stocked and what is not. They are cogs in a franchise that sells shoes en masse, not shoe-selling professionals, but they aren't burnt out humanoid salesbots.

Payless does have some advantages:
- some of their styles are acceptable enough that people won't stare at you and wonder where (or why) you bought those cheap/ugly shoes
- your chances of finding a woman's shoe that fits "well enough" are higher than at any of the budget chain stores
- you can probably find a style plain enough that no-one notices if you wear it in drab as well
- their prices are usually low enough that you can afford to experiment (especially if you hit one of their sales)
- the clerks really don't mind that you are buying womens' shoes; they see it all the time, and it generally amuses them (but not in a "laugh at you" sense)

I don't really go to Payless all that often -- I don't get to Dress often enough to need a lot of shoes, and I don't have a place to put them.

They must have a well-tuned "crossdresser" detection sense: pretty much no matter which location I go into, even if I've never been to that one before, or never seen that clerk before, they look a bit puzzled if I wonder over to the mens' section, and relax when I head to the womens' section.

Though now that I think of it, I don't see many solo men my age in there: families, Yes, and wives hauling their husbands along because It's Time For You To Get New Shoes, but I guess most solo men my age and apparent financial bracket would probably go to a more traditional shoe store.
