I had a day off from work and got dressed to go out of town to do some shopping for the afternoon. I am reasonably passable for an overweight middle-aged woman, unless I interact much with people, then my voice causes people to question what they see. Anyway I needed to make a few stops before I left town.

So, I dropped off some clothes at a clothes bank, dropped my cable tv bill off at their drive thru window and went to drop my cell phone bill off. I know that I can do these latter two tasks through the mail, but I enjoy my short quick interactions dressed as Jenna. You know, "Hi", "No", "Thank you" - short simple phrase responses.

As I open the door to the cell phone store and step in, I see a woman coming towards me and the door and immediately recognize her as a friend of mine and my wife's. Now I am wearing sunglasses and look quite different than my male self, so I just walk past her and don't look back. I figure if she has a moment of recognition and stops to look at me to determine if she knows me, that if I turn that's going to give her a little more evidence. I move to the counter, the SA asks if she may help, I say no, in my best fem voice (not really good - but one word is easy), hand her my bill, and turn to leave.

Now is a moment of truth, did she stop in the store or just outside or continue on? As I look through the store, she is not here, my gaze moves to the parking lot and I can see her walking towards her SUV. I walk out slowly, go next door to the Hallmark and step inside to admire some figurines and make certain she leaves the parking lot without making a driveby.

She leaves the lot and I head to my minivan. Time will tell, our daughters are in a state high school volleyball tournament this weekend and we'll see her there. I'll be looking for unusual glances and looks from her and her husband.

BTW shopping went well. Bought a great pair of red ballerina shoes at Payless and a pair of Zana-Di jeans at Fashion Bug as well as some basic cosmetics at Wal Mart.

Sorry for the long-winded post.

Don't worry about it she saw a woman walk in and you didn't go to your van which she might have known. Besides she was thnking of things she had to do to notice anybody. Glad your shopping went well.

I wouldn't get away with that. I usually have my wife with me when I'm out dressed and if they didn't recognize me they would recognize her. We were in a resturant one night when someone we both knew came in. Fortunately he didn't see us.

Not a long winded post at all Jenna. :D I was with you all the way  I can totally relate. My personal opinon is that this person did not recognize you at all. I know myself that being en femme with wig and sunglasses etc.....well I wouldn't recognize myself.

I'd say, relax, it's highly unlikely anything bad is going to happen over this. Thanks for sharing, it's good to know that I'm not the only one who thinks like this. :D Although I do agree with Bernadina, I'd be outed in a second if the person knew my wife because she always comes with me.

Jenna,

I'm sure you're safe.

I don't dress in public in my hometown for the reason you found out. but I have several friends who were found out when they were in public. But the acquaintance didn't recognize them, they recognized their wives who were with them. One acquaintence didn't even recognize the CD until the wife introduced the CD as her husband!

But that is what makes life interesting when going out. At least you had an adventure!

Hugs, Lori

Hi Jenna,

Had nearly the same thing happen to me one of the first times I went out in daylight. I went to the next town over and was shopping in a Rite-Aid. As I walked down an aisle, a couple appeared from a side aisle within 8 feet of me. We walk past each other. I worked with her for years doing insurance data for employees; she's known both me and my wife for as long as we've lived in this town. Good thing I looked different! I was in jeans, full make-up, blonde page-boy wig and 2" heels. That was about a year ago. Scared hell out of me, but I've never heard anything. At least I didn't call her and her husband by name and start up a conversation. (I think I was too stunned and paniced.)

Hugs,
Gwen

Thank you all for the replies and words of encouragement.

Gwen, funny you mention it, but when I first saw her, I started to say "Hi -----". Caught myself, and as I posted earlier, just continued walking past her.

Sometimes, when one is comfortable with oneself, paranoia is tossed aside and you are yourself. Saying hi to a friend is natural, I'm actually amazed that I didn't wave or say something.

Don't worry about it, she probably never even gave you a second glance. But just don't push your luck and wear the same outfit to the volleyball tournament....:heehee:

Hi Jenna! I once was an escort for the Local Miss America Pagent. The girl I was escorting, in my opinion did't have a chance because she looked so plain
in rehersal. Well, the evening came and WOW! Her hair was done up, her makeup was perfect and she sang like a songbird. In short, she won. So often, nice clothes, makeup and hair can do so much to change appearance, especially in a guy. You just don't expect it. I don't leave town to shop and
I know nobody recoginizes me and I don't think you should worry. Just go, do and be true to you.:hugs:

When I went out to a club once I saw a guy I work with walking from the back room into the main lounge and he went right by me with out even a second look. I think when we are made up and dressed in our female persona they will not recognize you as they are looking for a guy not a lovely lady(OK I can dream) .

Normally, when I go out, I go out alone without my wife for the same reason. It would be easy for someone to put 1 and 1 together. When you are out alone, even if you are read, it is usually hard for someone to put your two faces (male and female) together and make the connection. I wouldn't worry about it. Have fun.

Unless your wife mentioned to her that you were headed there that day, en femme, you're probably OK. You being there en feeme was about the furthest thing from that woman's mind. You can breathe now. :D Glad you had a nice day out. ;)

First off let me say that I think "pass" great for an "overweight middle-aged woman". You look really good.
Secondly I wouldn't really worry about being recognized. Most people don't pay attention to what goes on around them. She may have thought "boy she looks familiar" but then wracked her brain trying to think of who you look like

Well I bet you were sweeting to beat the band. I had about the same sitution years ago and I thought a friend seen me, but since it was a halloween party I figured he was to drunk to notice it was me. She was too busy to notice it was you. A woman mind is always busy.
