When I first started taking T, I made sure to ask my doctor if it was okay to drink. He told me that 3 should pretty much be my limit for the week. I'm just wondering what everyone else's doctors might have told them. Should we just stop drinking altogether to make it easier for the liver? Or do you believe in still keeping a vice like this?

Hey, Durden:

My doctor never mentioned it. What I was most warned about is watching out for cholesterol, heart disease and high blood pressure, which is what they check me for every couple of months, since testosterone can increase these things - especially in middle age. Of course, I'm not a heavy drinker and my doctor knows this, so that may be why she didn't mention it. My average is a couple of beers about once a week and sometimes not for several weeks.

I have a TS friend and she was told just to keep the drinking sensible and not to over do it.

Sorry, I don't drink, so this is just not an issue. I will bring it up at my next endo apointment just as a point of interest.

Thanks, Steph.

& yeah. I'm guessing it's best to just play it safe & keep the drinks to a minimum. It's a little hard though when friends & I go out after work for a drink. Blah, it could be worse.

It's my understanding that alcohol can negatively affect the way estrogen works in the body for feminizing, but, of course, that has nothing to do with your question. I'm guessing that a few drinks won't hurt, but a bunch isn't good for the liver anyway, and when combined with higher than normal levels of hormones, it can be a bad combination.

Ahhh.

Amber has a GOOD point. That's right. Alcohol is metabolized in the liver. Alcohol is hard on the liver. We know alcoholics detroy their livers.

Estrogen is also metabolized in the liver. Estrogen is hard on the liver. So this may all be about being kind to your liver.

Makes sense.

I am under the impression that alcohol affects the estrogen from working properly, thus I limit myself to a quarter glass of red wine daily

Cos of the effects on the liver its best to keep alcohol consumption down... for both MTFs and FTMs, to help your liver a little theres always Milk Thistle, this is very useful for helping the liver repair itself, which it can do if not hammered all the time...

The risks of DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis), PE (Pulmonary Embolism) and Type 2 Diabetes are high in if you smoke and drink too much and with FTM patients they need to watch out for an increased Red Blood cell count...

hope that helps a bit :)
