But I love thrift stores and here's why.
Tuesday my wife and I walked a few blocks to the hospital thrift store. All of the money they collect is used to help their long term patients. So it goes for a good cause.
Our goal was to see if we could find some sheer lace curtians. While there we found: A litle black dress (still new with tags) that had a retail price of $29.99. It was priced at $3.50, however since it is the holiday season everything is 1/2 off. That made it $1.75. "But wait theres more". A nice wide brown belt at .25 cents, A knee length black pleated skirt at .75 cents. A pair of sneakers for my wife at .50 cents. A very nice never used spring purse for .50 cents. Thats a total of $3.75.
I have not tried them on yet, but I wll soon a maybe post some pictures. When we find clothes and things this reasonable we almost feel guilty. (key word is almost). If you haven't been to any thrift stores, take a look at hospital shops. You will be amazed, and it is for a good cause.
Not even Christmas yet..:heehee:
Have a great day........

I recently got a beautiful black gown at a thrift store for a couple of bucks none the worse for wear. As you say Sara, some good bargains to be had at those places. BTW, you look so nice in your avatar pic. Ericka Kay

Thrift stores are wonderful. Most of my skirts and dresses have come from them. Our local store will take returns for a store credit. I once took a dress back that didn't fit and got another, but I felt guilty. The dress only cost $3.75 and the money goes to a good cause, so now if it doesn't fit, I just give it back so they can sell it again. Your post reminds me that it has been a couple of weeks since I have been thrift shopping, better take my lunch time and see what bargins are there for the holidays, thanks.

Well glad you madeout but I hate them and here's why.......poorly marked sizes and hard to find my size....generaly poor quality and not in the best shape....out of style.....
I'd much rather shop clearences...take the skirt in my avatar....on clearence at Kohl's for $4.00 last week.....Top - Value City $6.00, bought that leather jacket at K-mart last spring on clearence for $7.00 and a matching leather skirt for $5.00.....New boots at Value City - Liz Clayborne, leather....$29....
Dressing like a cute chick.....PRICELESS!!!

I have to agree with you, Karren. Why just last week I tried on the very same skirt at Kohls. I didn't buy it as my storage space is limited and currently quite full :heehee:

Probably 1/2 of my growing wardrobe is from thrift stores namely "goodwill" Always a favored place can usually pull off trying stuff on there as well. I just toss in a few drab things to disguise the good stuff.

You can do the same "trick" for trying on things at Kohl's or any other department store with unattended dressing rooms....

I'm still hippie enough to consider Malls creepy, so I avoid 'em. Thrifts stores are a terrific deal if you got the time and stamina. Watch for missing buttons, iffy zippers and stains around the bustline. Between the Mall and the local Goodwill, every town has a vintage or consignment shop which can be most excellent sources. Who wouldn't wanna look like Cindy Wilson from the B52s?

I'm definitely not one to avoid the mall, but I have been having fun lately shopping at thrift and vintage stores. Around here, most of the thrift stores suck, but in cities that have a lot of trendy people, you can often find stuff that's only a year or so old. I was out shopping in Berkeley, CA a few weeks ago, and bought some killer stuff, including a pink Guess 3/4 length tweed coat for $20...definitely couldn't complain. Also bought an Armani Jeans denim jacket for boy mode for $15...my guess is that it was at least $200 new.
Also, since learning to sew, I've found thrift stores a great source for raw material. Sometimes you can find really cool fabrics on tops that just need to be recut a little to make them into a more stylish design. Often, you can get good fabric for a heck of a lot less than at the fabric store.
I love thrift stores too............somedays you find nothing...other days you really score....sounds like you really scored:thumbsup:

I went shopping at charity stores with some friends recently, and the old grannies in there went off defumigating all the clothes I'd tried on like I was diseased or something they were hilarious...they still took my money though the hypocrites

I'm so glad you gurls/girls find nice stuff at thrift stores. One thing is I don't think I'd find much in my size. I grew up on hand me downs and Good Will clothes. So I don't want to go back to those days. I buy what fits and what I want on sale. I have only once paid full price because I didn't know how to determine sizes. So a nice sales lady helped me pick out what fit. That to me was worth the price of admission. She kept asking me what "The Lady In My Life Liked" till I asked to try some clothes on. It was a nice experience. And I just got a card in the mail for a sale for past customers only. I guess she took me seriously.:D

Thrift stores are great. They usually seem to be less intimidating than regular stores for the timid, too.
