Dressing up

My SO is out of town this weekend so of course I am going to dress up. Usually I paint my nails, but on my way home from work I was waiting at a light and saw a salon that did not seem busy. I have never had my nails done in a salon before, always too chicken. I pulled in and told my self don't think bout it just walk in and ask for a set of acrylics. The place was empty when I walked in, other wise I would have chicked out. The lady who did my nails was very nice, she said she has done some men before. A few customers came in while I was threre but I did not seem to get any comments or even long stares, and believe me I was very concious of my surroundings.
It takes about an hour so I feared someone I know would walk in, should have done this dressed. All in all, it was a nice experience, and the nails are gorgeous. I got them done in pink for an outfit I plan to wear tonight, but the nail tech really tried to talk me into a bright red for Xmas. I was close to folding, this is a much nicer way to unwind from the work week. I am going to cry when I have to take them off, oh well. Many years wanting to try this and now I think, why did I wait so long! Boy it is strange to type with these nails.

I am a confirmed acrylic fan! I have fill ins @ every 2 weeks or so. I like chatting up the GG's who are clients also, and there are always a bunch there. They don't seem to be bothered when I have my feet done too, always with pink polish. For my nails, I like them rounded and two coats of really shiny clear polish. Once you get the gals chatting, most really loosen up and different styles and colors are easily discussed. The best fun was the time I got there early on a Saturday when a wedding party had the place tied up. That was a great time and good chat! One word of caution, if you use color polish on acrylic, a bit of stain seems to happen when you try to remove it!

Good for you.
Maybe you should have gotten clear ones so you wouldn't have to remove them.
They could then be painted any color, over a couple layers of a clear base coat.
Non-acetone removers (acetone will remove the acrylic) could then be used to remove the color.
"Pretty Nails" is one non-acetone remover.
Onyx is another (sold at Ulta for example).

Oh my gosh, I'm so bad. I wish I could do what you did, go into a nail salon in boy mode and have my nails done. I can't even get the courage to do it in girl mode. The last time I tried it this is what happened - I posted about it.

Well, I just went out shopping and along the way I stopped into the same nail salon and thanked the nail tech who did my nails. She was working on anoher customer but seemed to recognize me (I went back totally enfemme). She said I looked nice.
Did not end up buying much, saw a beautiful pair of black patent pumps in Payless but they did not have my size. They had the size smaller but they were a bit tight.
When I first went out to shop, I forgot a purse or hand bag, oops. There isn't any place to carry money or keys. Had to go back home. I have been going out for a little while but I still have much to learn. This forum has helped me build cofidence.

As many know I get both my toes and nails done at my salon. I always get my toes painted and I have acrylic nails with clear polish. Wife knows about my nails and toes, since I have bad nail and now even my wife has said she likes them this way a lot better. the last time I was in for a full treatment, my tech asked if I wanted my toe color in christmas color. I said YES and now I have the prettiest CHRISTMAS RED toes.
As for comments or stares, once in a while I get a stare at my toes, but otherwise, I have had only good comments from both the techs and customers. In fact this last time, a GG was in the chair next to mine and when she saw the color on my toes, she asked me if she could borrow the bottle of polish and I handed it to her and she smiled and said "Thank you".

have had my nails done twice both times in drab. Felt a little nervous but I just love the relaxing feeling and chatting about nail care etc to the technician.
I would recomend all men get it done - I have taken so much better care of my nails since.
Next step is to get a colour on them:thumbsup:

That is the first thing I do when my wife and I go to atlanta. I drop her off at americasmart and then I head to marietta. I found a sweet girl named susan at tlc nails who has done a full set on me four times now. The first time was in drab but the last several have been totally in femme. She told me I am the first married man she has ever done. I got a french manicure last thursday but switched to red for the triess weekend and christmas party. Wow do those atlanta gurls push the limits. It took about 70 minutes to totally dissolve the achrilic on sunday but it was painless and so worth having those long red nails that will not fall off or split or have any other malfuntion you can have with press-ons. Yes I got a pedi too! I still have the red toes to remind me of a great weekend. If you haven't tried it you might not want to cause it will definatly become a habit.

I definately need to try this one day. I have the worst nails after 20 years of construction. I'm just afraid that someone will notice something is strange even after I remove them The last time I tried the "press on" type I had glue residue for three weeks. I was very self concious and tried to keep my hands hidden most of the time.

Those of you who read some of my previous posts know that all my nails are done every two weeks. I started getting my finger nails done before my wife passed away, at her urging. I was having a problem with my nails cracking. So now I have acrylics all the time. I usually go to the salon on Tuesday, because that is generally the slowest day in a Nail Salon. Even so, I always meet, and talk to, some GG's. Usually get compliments on my nails My fingers are always done in some shade of pink and shaped like a womens should be, but my toes are always something very bright and showy. My Tech, who is owner of the shop, told me when I was in 2 weeks ago (it's time! ) that she was looking for a real Bright Red for me to wear for Christmas. I was going to use Opi's Rudolph Red, which is very bright and sparkly, but she said she had something else in mind. I know she does other men, but I am the only one who is a regular and always has color on. My major problem is choosing what color to wear, either from my own stock, or in the salon. I probably have about 50 bottles of polish. Never wear the same more than 2 weeks.:heehee:

I know this is my second post in a row, but I had to tell you girls this. I made my usual bi-weekly visit to my nail salon today. Usually it is almost empty on Tuesday, but not today. I told Viviane, the owner/ lady who does my nails that I needed all of them done. She smiled and said, "I was hoping you would, here is your Christmas present," and handed me a little gift bag. Inside were 2 bottles of polish. One was a Bright Rosy Pink called "Glam Queen" (Moi!) and the other was beautiful pale Pink called Romantique. Rosy Pink on my toes and fingers are Romantic! I did get some looks from the GG's, and some comments about how nice my nails looked. Loved the attention!!:heehee:

What about nail size and acrylics? My thumbs are 3/4 of an inch wide. This is the next adventure I want to partake in.:D

Joy, any experienced nail tech can put nail enhancements (acrylic, gel, fiberglass, etc) on any size nail. If you get tips, they can poece together a couple of tips since they will be overlain with the product anyway. If you do not want them really long, I suggest you go for a sculpted nail, there would be no problem that way.
Please check out the threads in the Veauty Club for all types of artificial nails explained.....

A helpful tip I learned about nails that split... Don't cut it off! Put a drop of super-glue right on the crack and it will hold it together for a while. I was told this trick by a GG many years ago as a quick fix for a chipped or cracked nail. I had one split near the quick and have done this. I filed the surface and the enamel looks perfect. I've had to re-apply the glue when I change colors though.
