View Full Version : I Finally Did It!

Well, Wednesday was finally the night. As many of you know, my birthday was last week and, to treat myself, I went to Las Vegas for a couple of days this week. My primary reason for going was to see Barry Manilow at the Hilton on Thursday night (GREAT concert, by the way) but I figured if I was going to have a free night in Vegas, what better time and place for me to make my up close and personal debut as Kaitlin.

I have been out as Kaitlin many times for late night walks in the neighborhood and driving around but had never been in such a public place before.

The anticipation and excitement as I drove the two hours down from Utah was intense, to say the least. I had broken the pair of earrings I wanted to wear so I stopped at Wal Mart to get another pair. They didn’t have the ones I was looking for but did have some nice crystal clipons that would do just fine.

I checked into Harrah’s around 5:30 and headed for my room to unpack. I ate a quick dinner and began the transformation to Kaitlin. It took nearly 2 hours to get ready which was a shock since I can usually do my makeup and dress in about 30 minutes. I must confess that about half of that time was spent dealing with the fake fingernails that just wouldn’t cooperate. I took a few pictures and headed out into the real world around 9:00. I was wearing my favorite blue turtleneck, a new black ruffled skirt I bought on Ebay and my 3” closed toe strappy sandals. My makeup was my usual look. (See pix below)

Being that I was staying in the middle of the Strip, I had a plan. I would go down the elevator, through the casino and out into the Carnaval Court. Then I would walk up Las Vegas Boulevard to the Venetian, across the street to the Mirage then down to Caesar’s, back across the street and back up to Harrah’s. I expected it would take about 20 minutes or so and I figured that would be enough.

As I walked from my room to the elevator lobby, I was secretly hoping that there would not be anyone waiting for the elevator or in the elevator when it came. The gods were smiling on me and I had the lobby and elevator to myself. When the elevator hit 1, I took a deep breath and walked out as if I owned the place. There was someone waiting for the elevator as I walked out and he just looked at me and smiled. So far, so good. As I walked past Starbucks, I got a couple of looks from people seated drinking their coffee and one girl talking on her cell phone gave me a quick double take. I walked on and a couple of guys I passed snickered a bit. I knew I was going to be read and was prepared for it. I just held my head up and kept walking.

As I walked around from the Court to the Strip, I had to walk through the usual crowd of people watching the airbrush artist. A couple of them looked at me but didn’t pay me much attention. I got read a few more times on the way to the Venetian and, when I got there, had to wait for the light to cross Las Vegas Boulevard. An older couple came up beside me and the man stared at me several times. As we crossed the street, he said something to his wife and she turned and stared at me. I didn’t really care – I was having too much fun to worry about them, although my feet and calves were starting to hurt a bit.

Walking down Las Vegas Boulevard in front of the Mirage was interesting. There were, as usual, a bunch of people wandering around waiting for the volcano to erupt. I just kept moving until I got to the corner across from Harrah’s. While I was waiting for the light, a couple of guys carrying beers and obviously feeling pretty good walked by me. One of them said something to the other one and they burst out laughing. I heard one of them say that he “was going to have some fun with that one” and he walked up beside me. I didn’t feel like dealing with him so I moved to the other side of the crosswalk, and went back across Las Vegas Boulevard. He and his buddy went on their way. By now my feet were really sore (I need to walk more in heels) so I decided to call it a night and walk back through the casino to the elevators and head for my room.

Several people gave me funny looks as I walked through the casino but I still didn’t care. I showed my keycard to the security guard and he just nodded (he was dealing with a Japanese couple who didn’t understand why they had to show their key card to ride the elevator). I quickly got on the elevator and headed for my floor.

I was destined to have one more encounter before calling it a night. As I turned the corner to head for my room, I met a female member of the hotel staff. She put her head down as she walked by me and it was all she could do not to burst out laughing. I guess if I ever did have a hope that I would pass, by that point it was long gone.

All in all, it was a fun and exciting night and something I really want to do again. In retrospect, though, I think I would have been a lot more convincing had I been wearing jeans or pants rather than the skirt. The skirt would have been fine on a Friday night in the summer but nobody wears skirts in Vegas on a Wednesday in December. I also need to lose a bunch of weight – I looked kind of like a whale in a skirt tonight. For a first outing, though, it was a rousing success. I hope I can attend Diva Las Vegas in April and get a good workout as Kaitlin!

Well I think you look fine, may be the skirt a little short for a walk about but that wasn't stoping you on that night, but you where still on top of the world and lived to tell about it:thumbsup:

I really did enjoy it - it was sooooo exciting and really scary at the same time. If the guy in front of the Mirage had pressed the issue I don't know what I would have done.

First :^5: first night out dealing with people you handled it great. Passing is 2/3 looks 1/3 confidence improvement comes with time, for me always working on voice. You look great as you begin to interact with other everything will improve. I used to like the shock value when I was out, now I dress to blend and yes I will get read from time to time but now in the background most of the time and go unnoticed.

I think you look fine in your pic. I am so glad you had a good time and after all that's all that counts. three years ago I stayed at Harrah's And I took a day walk. (never told the story here) So I knew where you was when you left the elevator and went for your walk because I took the same route. your story brought back some fond memories. way to go girl.

I wonder how many of those people you thought were judging you were actually just checking you out? You look pretty convincing to me!

Hi Kaitlin,

My wife and I went to Las Vegas for Halloween and I spent nearly the whole time en femme. It was very easy for me to visualize what you did and where you went because I did the same sort of things. We stayed at the Stardust which is on the strip but up the other end from where you were located. However, I did spend time walking the area you did.

I'm a little confused why you apparently got read so much as you look perfectly fine to me and apart from agreeing with you about your skirt being not exactly something to "blend in" I think you look fabulous. Even if I take into account that pictures can sometimes lie, I still think you look pretty good and I'm surprised as many people noticed you as you say they did.

Anyway, thanks for sharing you experiences, I personally found Las Vegas to be very TG friendly and would recommend it to anyone who wants to go out in public en femme.

Congrats Kaitlin. I wish that I have your guts. I chicken out in October when I was in Vegas.

Stephanie, perhaps it was the double takes, the woman who almost burst out laughing and the guy at the Mirage. Anyway, I am really proud of myself for finally taking the plunge.

One person on MySpace said that she thought the wig was a dead giveaway. I love that wig - I would hate to think it was a significant reason I got read. I have a few others - they may be more appropriate. I also thought about wearing pants rather than the skirt but I always get compliments on my legs so I went for it.

Here I thought what happened in Vegas is supposed to stay in Vegas, not be posted. Guess I will have to stay backstage where what happens really does stay there, until my book comes out at least.

Wal Mart has clip ons.... You mean I don't have to have my ears piersed (did I spell that right?)!!!!

P.S. Almost forgot.... You look Fab! Are you sure you're a CD and not a GG? The pics look great! Wish I looked that good.

Kaitlin just remember some of the time when you think you were being read you may not have been read. Often when we see other laugh, we think it is at us, when the laughter may not have anything to do with us at all. You look great and you enjoyed yourself! That is so great! Wish I had been there with you.

Kaitlin, Your look is quite presentable. With the wig, if you can brush it out in front to form bangs on your forehead, that might shape your face better. Presentation is only a part of passing. None of us know how well you were walking in heels, swinging your arms, holding your head, and were you smiling? Your overall movement, mannerisms, gestures, and facial expressions can make or break your passability regardless of how great your outfit and makeup are. Since this was your first time out like this, you might have unconsciously walked with a stiffness or showed tension on your face.

No fear--going out takes practice.

Kaitlin, You look great to me. I'll tell you this, I don't think I could ever pass any anytime, but you never know. I would say that maybe people fingered you by the way you walked. It is hard for a guy that does not walk in heels much to do it like a Lady. The skirt probably did give you away also. There are shoes out there that are comfortable, although it may take some time to find them. This would make a big difference, along with a lot of practice. I am glad you don't seem down about not passing, what the hell as long as your having fun that is what matters. Well, maybe next time you'll be more apt to wear something a little more conservitive, although I would probably wear a dress if I were there.

Well done!!!!!, Kaitlan. I don't worry to much about other people, the ones you think are going to say something probally won't or are not concentrating on you anyway. Have fun while your doing it.. Lots of people may have seen you out walking but its if any of them really saw you that counts. I think from your account not many saw you, they saw a lady in a skirt.

Thanks everybody. I think a lot of my getting read was my walk - particularly towards the end. I was out and about in drab on Thursday (walked about 10 miles up and down the Strip) and spent most of the day observing GGs as they made their rounds. I learned a lot and clarified a lot of questions. Now, tis time for practice, practice, practice (and also a session with Melanie Anne Phillips's CD on voice training).

Marie - Wal Mart DOES have clip ons but not very many and only in silver. Claire's sometimes has them, too. Just depends on the store. Also, try ebay - you never know what you will find.

Nora - I probably won't be in Vegas again (except for trips to the airport) before April as I will be overseas from mid-January to mid-March. If not before, hope to see you at DLV but I'll definitely take you up on dinner if I make it before then.

Before answering your question, congratulations for the beautiful account of your Vegas experience. Great writting talent there. And what a great time you must have had.

Back to your question, I prefer the second wig, it is more modern and suits your face better than the one on your avatar.

Keep enjoying yourself and have fun going out

hi good on you the first time i went out it was hard and i kept thinking some one was going to come up and start trouble but since then i have been out many times and now i go out in a skirt/dress more than pants or shorts.

i dont care now a days what other people think if i give some one a laugh then i just think i have at least brightened up there life for a short time.

all my friends here think i am unuasual if i go out in male clothes and that there is somthing wrong.

i am lucky in that people have accepted me for what i am and when any one says anything about me dressing in girls clothes they all stick up for me.

i think it is becous i made the decision to just do what i want and get on with life.

keep up dressing as you like it does get easyer as you go out more and it is what you think that matters.

dont dress difrent then your own age and not as many people notice.

i was out once in florida just in a skirt and blouse and sandles in a bar when this guy asked if i was wearing a kilt i said no its just a skirt and he asked why i dressed like that i told him its the way i like to dress and his girlfriend said she would like to see him in a skirt and then added that she may go out and buy him one which he dident seam to like the thought of.

o well better go as i am going shoping for a dress for christmass.
