I spent two hours Sat. evening browsing at the mall. I am 60, have salt and pepper hair, wore lipstick and a skirt. Wow, did those things set me apart! There may have been 4 customers my age in the entire (large) mall. None had gray hair. I saw few customers wearing cosmetics. And, I saw not one person of either sex:happy: wearing a skirt. Out of hundreds or thousands of women. My outfit was conservative middle aged. I was ignored by one and all amidst the holiday crush. Bought 2 doz. knee-hi's at Walmart, plus batteries for my watch. Merely one of the holiday horde there, too. Again, of course, nobody in a skirt.

Brave to say the least. You are right a skirt or dress is not battle wear for a mall these days. How can you run from one store to another. The good thing is nobody thought you were anything, but a Lady in a skirt!

I'm going shopping en femme tomorrow. I'll wear a skirt ad I want to buy some dresses. Maybe I'll try them on. I've bought some stuff drab for "girlfriend".

I'm not sure if I pass that well. I went to cinema other day and the ticket guy called me mate. So voice is give away.

The film I saw was Holiday and even though I was alone ended up between 6 young women. I think they knew, but didn't say anything...

I would lose my union card just walking into a wall mart. The skirt is not an issue.

I just have to ask where are you from? I went to the mall today and there are skirts everywhere. I was in heaven imagining what they would look like on me. ;)

Karren supports a right to dress, union free environment...hehe

I have been out en fem in jeans or pants and it just is not the same for me. A skirt is so much more feminine and puts me in the right "mood".

I agree completely! But, it's necessary to blend, sometimes. Last night, I went to the movies and felt I had to wear slacks. I waited in a line for about 10 min surrounded by upper teens and a few older folks. Slacks were the right decision, as I don't need to elicit second looks based upon the "who wears a skirt to the movies?" issue. Now note that the slacks were silk. Although they did not look dressy, they sure felt nice, almost like a slip. (I rather like slips). I did wear a fairly fancy pair of earrings, but isn't that allowable any time any place?

Megan--I am sure there are regional differences. My experience is from the suburban southern New England area.

I go out shopping a lot here in central NY. I usually wear pink or black jeans, always with heels. It's the "trying to blend" reason for dressing this way because it's almost rare to see a female wearing a skirt or dress. Ocassionally I do wear a skirt and every time I do I seem to attract a lot of attention, especially from men. Of course that's not bad unless you're read. It's just a bit safer for me to wear jeans I suppose.
