Yesterday I was out early and decided to stop by the local mall on the way home for some Christmas shopping. After gathering up some courage, I walked into the Lane Bryant store and walked around looking at the merchandise. The SA greeted me on the way in and I told her I was just looking. After walking around the store, I decided to ask for help in finding a blouse. This is the conversation as I remember it:

SA: Looking for something for your wife?
DD: No
SA: No?
DD: No, I am looking for something for myself.
SA: You are?
DD: Yes
SA: You do know this is a women's clothing store?
DD: Yes

I do have to say, she did try to help me, but by then any couraage I had built up had disappeared and I left.

Oh well; another store someday.

Well, it takes some courage to do what you did... Congratulations for such a first move. It is always the hardest...

It took me many years to get to that point...

But after that it maks shopping for your own clothes so much easier...

I wish you more success next time and more stamina to keep going in your endeavour, unlike during this first try.

Diane,

I have found with each step that I have made in this womderful thing that we do that I stumble at first and skin my knees a lot but I perservere and bit by bit it gets easier until you walk with confidence in that area and then you move onto something else, always pushing boundaries (the ones that you want to push). Each of us, if we persist and know where we want to go with this will get there.

I applaud you in yor efforts.

I've been hit or miss with the Lane Bryant SA's. Mostly luke warm, especially this time of year. However, whenever it's been slow they've been great.

The fact that you said those phrases is awesome......that is a huge step....and it'll be easier the next time.

Last time I was in (Friday), I was in guy mode but wearing my Lane Bryant, Venezia jeans. I purposely removed my jacket so the V on the back pockets (V for Venezia) showed as I look for different outfits. The SA came over and asked if I needed help, and assisted me with no problems and a smile. I know she recognized the jeans.

With so much extra help this time of year, you never know who will be working and what their comfort level is. Please try again....

I guess Lane Bryant doesn't require their SA's to be very intelligent. Too bad you ran into that one. You are much braver than I am. One gold star for you.

Don't fret and try again. It's simply not that big a deal, and you will find that 99% of the SAs in the world, if approached with that simple candor, will be happy to work with you!

Hmmm That's curious. The upper management of Lane Bryant (soon to become Woman Within) has to KNOW that skatey eight thousand of their customers are CD's. Evidently the store staff in not trained with that information. Every CD I know(including myself) gets about 10 catalogs in the mail a month. I seriously doubt if they think we are buying all those women's clothes for our wives, especially since the majority of women tend to "dress down" these days. Maybe we should give them a suggestion informing them of that fact. No retailer I know of purposely turns away potential buyers no matter what it says on their ID. EKR

Diane, your experience at that store is NOT typical. Don't let it discourage you from trying again.
