Looking back now, I wonder why I thought it was going to be such a big deal, but that's all in hindsight. Just wanted to let you girls know that I live in a suburb of the Twin Cities metro area in Minnesota, and my court appearance went as smooth as silk. In fact, the bailiff approached me and my two witnesses as soon as we arrived and asked us to come into the courtroom alone, before anyone else was even allowed in, and they arranged for us to go into the judge's office for the sake of privacy while everyone else waited in the gallery. I couldn't believe how sweet they were to us! It took about 15 minutes, was NOT stressful or difficult at all, and did NOT require a lawyer. We finished and left before anyone else had even SEEN the judge's face! Driver's license was just as easy and the clerk was very nice. Here, the filing fee for the name change is $250 and then it's $10 for every legal copy of the order needed to send out to places like the bank etc.
I kept the same initials I was born with, but changed the actual full names, of course. I'm SO happy that piece of the puzzle is complete. Small steps.

Happy Birthday! I am so happy that things went well for you. We always build up in our heads how bad an experience will be and once we actually go through it it's usually a breeze. I know I do.

Very cool ! A profound event, for sure.

Here in California, the filing fee is $340 - ouch.

Chrissy--I'm SO happy for you! I was beginning to think you'd dropped off the face of the planet. You've got to be so totally relieved and content with the ease at which the name change procedure went. Hopefully the remainder of the journey will be just as free of bumps.
Enjoy your new ID-- it's a wonderful Christmas gift! I'll be with you in heart and spirit throughout the holidays and through all of your future challenges and celebrations :hugs:

Congrats, I am going to be doing the same thing in early January. Going to be using my unused vacation pay to to it with. With nine days left over that will cover the costs and still leave me with spending money. In California it costs $340 to file with the court and about another $300 to run an ad in the newspaper for four consectutive weeks stating the intent to change my name. I can't wait to do it.

Okay, I take the license part of that back. A letter came from the state DMV today that said they didn't get the proper documentation to send me the new license -- that I need to jump through some other hoops was no huge surprise, but it is disappointing. I thought I'd skipped through it so easily. You'd think the judge's order would have been good enough, but I think the hangup came b/c I changed the gender on the license application, not just the name. Maybe I assumed too much...
