"Transsexuals were born into one gender but identify psychologically and emotionally as the other. Transsexuals are generally thought to have a condition called gender dysphoria (also called Gender Identity Disorder). Those who are born physically male but are emotionally and psychologically female are called Male to Female or MTF's. Those who are born female but are emotionally and psychologically male are called Female to Male or FTM's. There is some disagreement as to whether gender dysphoria is a physical condition, a psychological condition or both. Some scientists believe that gender dysphoria occurs when the developing fetus is in the womb and that a chemical imbalance occurs their development, that affects sexual difference."
Is it possible that our gender identity is determined before birth?
I know that the X/Y chromosome determines sex at the time of conception, what about during development?
I was born the youngest of 4 siblings, all male. My parents were definitly trying for a girl. :idontknow:

Well, Joan--it looks like they got one: You!
I agree with you, I think it occurs very early -- pre-birth -- because I experieced my first realization when I was just two years old!

Both females and males have testosterone and I have read the variance in both ranges from '10' to '100' - so I believe that may also be a factor.

Try this one on for size. I once had a girlfriend that was into the" past life thing" she say's that in most of my past lives I was female and this desire to dress and act like a woman is just a "leakthrough" from those past lives.

If you go into the biological development of the fetus we both look the same until about twelve weeks. I really think we are genetically predisposed to gender identity in spite of our outward appearance.

Joan, I can so agree with that as well. I was reading somewhere that this can occur during the first six weeks of pregnancy. Only thing is that I can't remember where I read as I've read so much just lately.

I think this condition if you want to call it so, is developed before our birth. I don't for a moment think I was cut out to be a male when I first appeared on this planet. My sexologist tells me that our "Sexual template" the geneticx make up of our sexuality, is pre formed and not to be changed.

Saw a doc on that show a month ago, he says that gender is determined in the brain at 8 weeks, now I'm not sure how he fig ures that out but at 28 weeks the physical half is done. (Or did I get this backwards?)
So if the two do not mat ch, gender Dysphoria occurs.
Seems to be logical, if the facts back it.
