Hi all.
I have been living full time female for a while now. I am also pre-op ts. Once I reached the point of living, working and doing everything as Susan, and just started being one of the girls. I noticed something about many of my gg friends. Many of the girls I work with along with many girlfriends I have out of the office all seem to want me to cut my hair shorter. They tell me I should have a working womens hair cut and style. One that is low maintenance.
I on the other hand "I JUST LOVE", my hair the way it is. I have gone through so much in my life to be able to wear my hair long and feminine. Why would I want to cut it short? I know they do not really understand how I feel. But once I tell them, no. They should respect my feelings and let it drop. Some do, many do not. This make me a little mad.
I am a woman, and I have the right to wear my hair any way I want.
What do you ladies think?

I totally agree with you Susan, you should be able to wear your hair how you want.

I can understand a lot of womyn get busy with their lives and shorter hair makes for convenience. When they were young girls and teenagers, chances are, they let it grow and grow. Almost all of us TS are in that space - plus we need that extra compensation. My hair is very long - and very dear to me. It's a major part of my identity, as superficial as that sounds.

you get to wear your hair any way you want. but you will get people who feel the need to help you. I had very long hair and my aunts drove me nuts insisting that a woman over forty looked odd in long hair. My mom is 68 and has long hair and they are forever making snide comments. I ended up cutting mine because it seemed to be to thin but I"m growing it back out now and the comments are starting.
You can just smile and thank them for their concern and do just what you want.

It's your hair, wear it as you desire.
As for long hair, I'm growing mine out and it's shoulder length, but... VERY thin. Oh how I long for the days when my hair was thick, but alas those days are gone. I like the length and enjoy the feel of the hair on my bare shoulders and back.

I had long hair since i was 15 with a few brief exceptions that we're out of my control. If i persisted to keep it long beforehand i certainly will now.

i can't remember the last time i cut my hair... lol can't tell you how often i heard get your hair cut..my hair is abought half way down my back... i love my hair .. while doing a purge i was convinced that the last thing i needed to do was cut it off.... thank god i never did as i was convinced that was the point of no return.... for me if i did get it cut the shortest i would go would be shoulder length ... giving the cut part to kids with canser... then growing it again.... don't let anyone tell you you have to cut it....

Oh... I think that you should listen to their advice and follow it.... NOT!
A good friend will give you advice that you do not like. Shorter hair might indeed give you a better look.
But I know how you feel about your hair. For years, I would not cut mine. I enjoyed having long beautiful hair. it worked for me then.
Now, my face likes shorter hair better. It is still rather long compared to many women my age. I cut it to shoulder length and then let it grow a while before I cut it again.
You should do what you want. Yes, listen to your friends and learn to value their opinion. But do what you want love. You've lived through too much not to lay claim to that precious privelage.

I don't understand people who don't get "No thanks". Sure, if you're always complaining about your hair in your eyes etc. But if you say you like it the way it is then they should drop it. Maybe GG's are more used to telling each other what they of their looks.
I had long hair most of my life. My dad hated it - so I grew it longer  . Got harassed by the cops, called 'girl' (sigh, if only now  ), all the rest. I loved my hair. Then one day I got sick and tired of dealing with it and cut it shorter. Kept it fairly long at the back, but the thinning at the top has forced me to cut it even shorter to avoid the 'mad scientist look'. My one concession to keeping it long is a cute little tail at the back.
I was loath to do it but a GG friend of mine suggested I might look better and she was right. She only said that because I asked. Otherwise I would have ignored her 'advice'.
Wear it the way you want hun. You may want to cut it shorter one day when you just can't be bothered looking after it, but if you're into it, there is nothing nicer than having long flowing hair

A time not so very terribly long ago when most everone had long hair both guy's and girl's it was called the 60's and it lasted for quite awhile until at least the 80's when the punk rockers finally took over witht here really weird stuff oh well.
So like i am now saying who really cares anymore if you are male or female or somewhere in between it should not really matter.
I know that given the real chnce that i myself would change myself into female if and when i ever really could I think that being female is far more important then just wanting long hair etc or something oh well.
One of these day's they will finally find a real way for all of us trapped female's to be finally free oh waht a day that will be.
Hmmm!

Man, I hate unsolicited advice. There's a line between offering helpful suggestions, and being just plain bossy. When they tell you to cut your hair, tell them you think they should grow theirs. If they're still too dense to get the message, flat out tell them it's your hair and you'll do with it as you please. And that if you want their advice, you'll ask for it. By the way, Susan, I think your hair looks great.

it is about to the jaw bone and it has quite the curl to it.i am gonna perm it while it's (shorter) so it won't seem too long for those (complainers) but it will be a very femme style).i am excited about it and it builds my confidence so much having this hair.i have gotten the "you need a hair cut" comment so many times i could shave all those people bald.an aunt of mine has hair like one of the 3 stooges around an inch long.moe,i think.???? i tell her she's jealous and i haven't told her about me either.

Interesting point, THEY want you to cut your hair.
Why does everyone else always want US to cut our hair?
Well I for one don't LIKE the soccer mom low maintenace haircut, sorry but there seems to be a stereotype that once a woman is married with kids she can just cut her hair and expect everyone else to follow her suit.
Is it feminism gone amuk or just convenience?
You could write a book on this topic.
I LOVE short hair on women, SHORT hair, not low maintenance soccer mom hair cuts.
Saw a gal at wal-mart with sh orter hair than I used to wear and it looked great on her and I told her this.
I used to catch it from family, you should cut your hair and inevitably I would, not this time - I laid it ouit before it grew that it was going to grow long.
Helps that my sisters kids are growing theirs too and they are natural blondes such as I am...
Yeah this is a sore point for me, grow your hair as you please.
My GG friend has hair to her backside, she trims it once a year, and she likes it. She knows how to put it up so it's low maintenance and doesn't need to cut it.
I think personally, those soccer mom's that have their hair short - if for some reason they find themselves single they grow it out to be attractive again, be interesting to see if they chop it short when married and secure again...
Sounds like a rant eh? :D
To each their own, if one wants a soccer mom hair cut, fine, but don't force anything on someone who enjoys the opposite.

i keep mine between this length and shoulder height. Usually if i bleach it or colour it pink or something i cut it while im doing it. Though i love a good trim to get a sharp line, allways makes me confident and refreshed.

i've always associated long hair as a feminine feature, enhancing and framing the face and flowing like your skirts in the wind! Keep it long! You look great!

A few years ago I began to let my hair grow out - primarily as a matter of convenience. As it came to the length where I could capture it in a little short pony tail, I really began to love it! It is now a good deal longer and find that I am very pleased with my appearance in drab as well as in "dress".
Yes it is trouble to wash, condition, tint and dry - but it is so "ever-loving" worth it! Even tho I am now 72, and it would seem to be a weird thing for me to have, it seems to give me confidence, and allow me to feel very individual in both modes.... I would say that I went for the last 50 years without a single comment on my hair - and now hardly a day goes by without someone making a complimentary remark. It really is a key for making contacts that never would have happened otherwise.

Long hair on a girl is beautiful in my eyes. My GLady likes hers shorter. She looks good with it sort, but I would rather have her wear hers long as I think all girls should have long hair. I like my hair long, although I don't think I could ever pass as a Female. I have pretty much had long hair most of my life. The problem with my hair is, is that it frizzes so much when it is long, unless it's dirty then it lays down. I have natural curly hair like my mother, and one of my sisters, she always had hers shorter. My dads was always kept short, but his was straight, like my other 2 sisters. I had one sister with long straight Blonde hair and she was a tomboy, everone elses was very dark like mine.

Hi Susan
I adore long hair......Advice can be given but that is all it should be I bet you do not go around telling the other women to grow their hair long or change this or that about them....Just choose what style you like if it dosent interfere with your work what is the problem...???

Long hair is incredibly important to me. My hair is curling up at the shoulders now and I wear it down inside the house where I spent most of my time. When I go out, I have to put it in a Pony tail and wear a cap. It is a request from my wife that I do so. I have gone to a hair stylist a few times and showed him a photo of a model ( female of course) and he cut my hair like the photo. He is really super about it. He has cut Doris Day's hair, Kim Novak's hair and a bunch of other celebrities. The stories he tells are very interesting and the cuts are phenomenal. Now, my whole family goes to this salon for hair styles. Someday, when I get my courage back up, I'll go in for another femme cut.
At any rate, one weird experience I had was in his salon. He was washing my hair before the cut and the local gender counselor comes in the shop. His office is in the same building. They chat about a shared concern of Internet access in the building. I got to meet the counselor without having to reveal my TG issues. It was one of the reasons I realized I couldn't see him for help. Person to person, it just didn't click.

but realize it is a lot of work.
If you do not mind the brushing every night and all the work and cost I see no reason to keep the long hair.
Just tell them you like long hair and do not mind the maintenance!

i've had long hair since i was 13 years old and once i found a length i liked there has been no one who has been able to get me to change it in anyway.
Clearly, there is no right answer to this thread! some "girls" look great in short hair and others with long hair. You should do whatever your heart tells you to do.
It's that simple.

I really want to grow my hair long, down to just past my shoulders. I had it as long as chin length in college and I loved it. Now it's only barely as long as a woman's short haircut, but I want it long.
To me, long hair means being real and authentic and not hiding (at least part of me) any more. My feminine side (whether it's part of me or all of me) is a girly girl and I long to express that by growing my hair.
I think you have every right to wear your hair long if that's what you want. Maybe they're just jealous how good you look -- or that you're not a slave to trends (and good for you for not being a slave to trends)?
Hugs,
Lisa

Hi all.
I totally agree that I also love my long hair.
I have been called a girly girl before and I am proud of it.
My long hair is a way of expressing myself as a female.
Hugs to you all

I'm growing mine out to see, and I'm going to grow it longer than I ever have.
I'm almost at that point, definitely on my shoulders but I need a tiny trim to get some shagginess away :)
I love having my hair long, it's a neat feeling I hvaen't felt in a number of years, combined with everything else femme about me I really am enjoying it.
Just gotta keep it neat as it grows on the shoulders, it's not laying flat just yet so it cna get shaggy looking :(

Doing the same here its brown with strawberry blonde highlights, not the longest it has been but with my ears piersed in drab it looks and feels great.
