View Full Version : Need advice on 'correct' weight

Hi all,
I am currently loosing some unwanted weight and I was hoping for advice. Not on how to loose the weight but what final weight I should set as my goal. I want to have a slim and more feminine profile. I know there are major body shape differences between female and male body shape and weight alone will not give me that shape. But Id like to be slim enough so that my waistline is as small a possible and still be a healthy weight. I am 5'8" tall. I currently have a typically male waistline but I have now lost over 10 lbs and am down to 170 lbs. I think my goal should be at least 20 - 30 lbs below this.
I really want a very slim profile with a thin waistline and believe I have the willpower to achieve this. Is 5'8" and 140 lbs realistic? Healthy?
Thanks,
Patti Remick

Don't know if 140 lbs is realistic to achieve for you, but it still belongs to normal weight BMI, hence go for it if you are able to.

Well, let's see... I'm 5'5'' and 145 and I have a bit of a gut. I was told that 140 is normal, but I looked much trimmer at 120. I don't know if that helps you any.

Hi Patti, I am 5'8" and weigh about 220, In the female aspect I'm cursed with big shoulders, chest and arms. In the male aspect, I'm a good size with most of my weight being muscle. However if you have a small bone structure, narrow shoulders and chest then you will probley do ok with a 140 to 150 weight. As a retired health care person, you can do well with a good diet and regular workouts, NO drugs or starving, all this does is force you body to start burning what ever energy it can find, ie your muscle mass which includes your heart!!! If you want a more girly shape then you must work at it, pay alot of attention to your abs, the tighter they are the more you get that hour glass shape. Sorry this is long, I have seen what fad diets and such have done to people. It's not any fun to be thin and depend on an ambulance to take you places. Kaitlin

You might try to locate one of the websites that has a section where you input your gender (female), perhaps body type, and weight. The site then tells you what your ideal weight range should be.:hugs:

Hard to tell without seeing your body type and all that. But I would guess 150 would be a nice wieght for a 5' 9" girl. You can get too skinny believe it or not. Some times you need a big bootie and a bit of a mid torso if you have big shoulders. But if you have a small frame without the shoulders yeap you can go real skinny.
We have a girl in Atlanta named Cindy that looks great that way. Skinny! But i have seen others that skinny that get a Triangle look going. Big shoulders then skinny legs, hips and waist...that does not work any better than being a hefty girl like Deidra!!! :tongueout 188 pounds this morning....193 the day after Christmas!
Never forget too there are all kinds of tricks to do with your outfits to cover weak spots!!!

Go to the gym and get your BMI or bodyfat workup done. Weight is not much of an indicator in my book. It can vary wildly, depending on what bone structure and most importantly, musculature is like.

I don't know what the "ideal" weight is for women who are 5'8" but I am. I recently went for my semi-annual check up and guess what? I was 147 Lbs. on the nose. The Doc was very pleased to say the least. Ericka

sedona is right / you need a bfi done to know / its not a strict height to weight deal / bone mass figues in / as does the amount of fat you carry (bf index)
muscle weighs more than fat / most female jocks are above the average because they carry muscle not fat / doctors prefer you to carry muscle not fat / fat is bad / muscle is good
look at your body in shadow / in silhouette / look for proportions not numbers
i put on a bit of weight a few years ago / in part because i'm getting old / and in part because a bit more weight around the middle balanced out the shoulders that almost 40 years of surfing put on

Well, I am 6' 2" and I am trying to get down to the 170 LBS mark. If I could just get this stomach to move to my hips and breasts, I would have it made.

I'm 5'8" and 138 lbs. Slender, some would say skinny, legs and arms. But with a nasty middle-aged gut. UGH! Don't forget, as I seem to have, that being in good physical shape is just as important as losing weight, and that muscle weighs more than fat. I need to start working on losing the "spare tire" (though I guess a corset would work :D ) by working out. Thanks for the inspiration!

I think this website gives unrealistic low weights. Me - 5' 3.75" tall -- I have a hard time going below 142 lbs so I just stay withing the 142 to 145 range without exercising too much. And I already wear size small mens, can do a 28 wiast pants, or womens size 4 some size 2 and 0 stuff.
Marie - I can't beleive you have a gut at 145lbs 5'5" -- you're almost my size! What size clothes do you wear?

Hello,
If it matters I am currently at 6 foot 175 lbs. Not sure if that is a correct weight for my height or not, but I am pretty happy where I am with my weight I do manage to get into a dress size 12, and a size 8/10 in pants. It takes exercise, disipline, commitment, proper diet, lots and lots of water, good sleep, to achive what your goals are. Good luck

Results: According to your height of 6' 1" your ideal healthy weight is 170 pounds. Your recommended weight range is between 151 and 189 pounds.
Or you could grow 5" and then you would be the right height for your weight... hmm does wearing 5' heels count?

Like the other girls have said, it really depends alot on your body structure. I am 6' and have gotten down to 150 lbs, but I've always been slim. Luckily most of my weight came off my middle.

I'm 5'8" as well. Year before last I helped a friend doing physical labor every day. I normally work in an office. Without any dieting, I saw my weight drop from 168 to 135. The difference was dramatic in how female clothes fit. I would suggest continuing to strive for something below 140. Even 139 would be good emotionally and physically.

Great example here. I'm a shade under 6'3", and if I approach 150 or even 160, they'd start putting feeding tubes in me. In fact, if I come anywhere near 185lbs, people start asking me if I've been sick. I've been told I look best, and I feel best when I carry about 9 percent bodyfat, and am around 195lbs. Some girls who are 6'2 or 3 would look like a cow at this weight.
You wouldn't buy shoes based solely on what a chart said was your correct size based on your height, would you?

Wow
I would have thought that at that height and weight the spare tire would be gone! That's the part I want gone most of all. Ill be so bumbed if I get to 140 and still have a spare tire.
I don't eat too much carbs but have not worked out because I do not want to get muscles - they are so masculine! I want to get slim, with no belly or spare tire at my waist. I want a slim waistline!!! I can accuate butt, hips, and top with shaping/ but I want a slim waist.
The corset did not help your waistline?? Im surprised.
