View Full Version : Simple Make-Up Makeover. A question.

I am having trouble expressing my question. Most articles on make-up, books etc., are oriented towards make-up methods for providing glamour pictures. And all the make-overs I have seen follow the same practices. What I am saying is that what makes a person look beautiful for a photograph taken with a moderate telephoto lense looks artificial when see close up and personal. Best example I have was a car show that had a Penthouse Pet signing car magazine covers. Up close, you could see she had on a thick layer of make-up and it looked artificial.

I get the most compliments about being passable when I go easy on the make-up, only using what I need to cover my beard roots on my face and neck and also some heavy coloration on the eyes. I have read many times about being careful to not go to heavy on the makeup.

So, do places like ULTA or the cosmetics departments of big stores that do makeovers, are they willing to show you how to look good with the minimal amout of makeup, trying to look natural, or do most of the firms only deal with glamour type makeup makeovers?

Hi Dee,
First, make a phone call. Then go meet the makeup artist. She can explain a lot to you. Also be aware that often their job is to sell you what they use so get several opinions first before deciding which one to use.

Now, makeup for glamour photography is not the same most women would use. Concealers and foundations are heavily used to remove imperfections at every turn. All the model really needs is good bone structure. Even at that, things can be minimized or accented by using shadows. For instance a narrow bridge can be made to look wider or vice versa. Jaw lines can be accented where they are somewhat indistinct. Cheek bones can be made to appear higher. All it takes is a good artist and believe me, these people are specialists.

The model who has absolutely clear flawless skin is rare. She is the one who can usually minimize the need for makeup for photos. She is also usually in high demand by the cosmetics companies. I have only known one such model and she was an absolute joy to work with. She is now retired and raising her family (all boys sadly to say).

Anyway, hope this is of some help.

:hugs:

Hi, and most of the makeup counters at Macy's, Younker's or the makeup department at Kohl's will give you a free makeover. Most expect you to buy at least 2 of the products she used. And they really wouldn't be mad, if you bought every thing they used on you. I swear they could make a fense post look beautiful. JMHO....BJ

That's why they are called artists. They pay a lot to learn their craft and it really is just that.
