View Full Version : The Drag Queen Look

Hi Everyone,
I myself like dressing up as a drag queen and would like to gage this community's like and dislike of the look. If I had to say the DQ's I like the look of, it would be Lady Bunny at http://www.ladybunny.net/loader_flash.html, Bella Berserk at http://www.bellaberserk.com/ and Jackie Beat at http://www.jackiebeatrules.com/home.html. I really do not like the extreme look of a DQ such as Nuclia Waste at http://www.nucliawaste.com/. However, I realize this look is an integral part of her act.

I myself have an extreme like for brightly colored sequin gowns, big hair wigs and loud makeup.

Option 5.)
For myself I don't like it (not a show person).
For others: Interesting to funny; depends

I like the smoothness they achieve, but as far as wild colors I really don't like it. Nothing like being natural.

I'm not sure if I can pick one of those Rita. I don't dress like that but if it's your style then go for it and enjoy it.

I think they look fantastic and I love the catty humour. I did a few drag style photos once... You can get away with being truly exotic to a degree which is simply impossible to achieve in everyday life. I still regularly watch Wigstock and Priscilla on dvd which I find very funny.

I'm a natural "ham" and have performed in the past Rita but as myself and not another character I create. I originally wanted to do drag but feel better just being myself. I have a lot of friends who are DQ's though and I think it's cool.

I voted...because i too love the DQ look and love dressin over the top....as a gg well I can't dress like that normally, so it is fun to go out with our friends and dress a little loud and high hair and the false eyelashes! I love that look for fun! Even more exciting when I get asked if I am truly a guy or a gg! :-) getting confused for a DQ makes my night!!

This pic is from Pride 2005

I did the DQ look at last years Pride as well, but I was not thrilled with my pics

for me there was only one drag queen, and that was "lily savage" ( paul o'grady ) in UK. he was fantastic. he is from liverpool and his accent and mannerism made her come alive :D and he wasnt to ott with her either :D

During my Warhol period I did some DQ images. This is one of them... I still think it is a powerful image. The original was done in the very early days of digital imaging and took three weeks to complete. This little thumbnail doesn't really do it justice.

And even more scary they change colour depending on my mood... True, true, true. Brown is sexy Lisa... Green is average Lisa... and blue is 'She's gonna blow Cap'n!' Lisa. Oh yes, as my best friend told me once... 'When your eyes are blue, it's time to be out of the room' ;)

Wish I was extravert enough to be a DQ.
I find the clothes a little extreme for my tastes, but otherwise like the look and love the approach to life they have.. don’t make any pretence as to what they are, and go right ahead and do it.

I went to a drag show in Portland, Oregon (at Darcelle's-- heard of it?) with my mom. I was fascinated by the pass-ability of some of the girls, particularly the Asians, African-Americans and Latinos (or Latinas, rather).

What I didn't like was the way they made femininity seem like a bitchy, affected thing. I know this is over-the-top fun, all in the good spirit of camp. But what's a nice, quiet, sweet, brainy girl to do? Still, some of them were drop-dead gorgeous and I had the strange sensation of being . . . jealous? No, never!

One thing I don't go in for is the stockings in open-toed stilettos look. Pumps with stockings-- fine. But the nylons' lines across the bunched-together toes obscuring nails painted red-- I haven't seen one model in Victoria's Secret with that. Particularly with glass shoes, which look to be two sizes too small. At Zappos or Nordstrom you can buy nice heels up to size 13, maybe even 14, in wide, double wide, and half sizes. Why totter around in what appear to be cheap shoes, unless you're about to do a porn scene (which is totally cool, I understand)?

I recently visited a scene with lots of DQs.
Whatever they look like, I love them.

They are not ALL bitchy, some are absolutely delightful and luminous !

I am scared of drunk and bitchy DQ's. Their Out-There Attitude when entirely uninhibited can wreck an entire event.

I didn't think I would like the drag queen look either until I was madeover by a drag queen!!! It was so fun but I know I couldn't pass with this look!! I have actually entertained the thought of doing drag in the future!!

What I didn't like was the way they made femininity seem like a bitchy, affected thing.

i think you have misunderstood the culture then. they make no pretence at femininity... it is effeminacy.
you shouldnt feel in any way offended by it as it has no reflection on your feminine feelings, or anything to do with what it is to be a woman

Christina Nicole

Drag is about parody. Why would I want to parody women when I actually would want to be a woman? It is not much surprise that most drag queens are homosexual. I suppose there are a few counter examples, but overall, yuck!

Warm regards,

I would love to go out with the 'over the top' look but I usually dress conservatively. My dream is to pass as a skanky 14 year old girl, a miniskirt and too much makeup.

drag queens were the pioneers, not only of the TG movement, but of the entire gay rights movement from Compton's in SF to Stonewall in NYC. Those that are Johnny-come-a-whole-lot later should at least respect them. After all, I see a lot of messages from girls going out to drag shows, and none about them going dressed to NRA meetings, NASCAR races, or Southern Baptist Conventions.

Sorry, I just dont like the drag queen look, Its great for a comedy show only. I only will tolerate it for entertainment purposes, but to use it as an every day look is what gives us real CD's a bad name. I will not go to a show in dress if there is a drag queen there, bad news. Girls, dont do it, please.

I voted "I won't dress as one, but I enjoy going to drag shows crossdressed."

However, I want to change "I won't" to "I haven't yet" because that's how it is for me. I've been to quite a few drags shows with my wife and other TG friends and really liked it. I haven't actually dressed up like it yet, the nearest I got was the Hooker's Ball. My wife loves getting all "DQ-ed" or" Gothed out" because she wear tons of makeup and a long black wig then turns to me with a smile on her face and says "I think I know why you like all this dressing up" ... it's fun and you can pretend to be someone else :D

I like the drag queen look. The drag queens were among the first publicly TG people that I heard about in magazines and on TV in the 60's and the 70's. For a long time now I've tried to budget to have some dq kinda clothes made and to buy some big hair wigs on line and it seems like the money keeps getting eaten up on other things. But I'm still shootin' for the fall of 2007 to buy some of these things. Some of the dq outfits look a little silly and maybe sometimes the colors clash, etc.but these girls often look gorgeous.I guess that the dq look would be a little over the top for a quick jaunt to IGA for for Pepsi or Menards for nails. It was these Ladies that showed me and a whole lot of people that you can wear female attire for your own pleasure and satisfaction and that this doesn't mean that you're mentally disjointed some sinister way.

I think drag is such an important and healthy part of TG and Gay communities. For both, I think it gives an ethos of humour to gender and sexuality, because if we're boring, dull and always moaning - what's the point of our existence?!

It's important for social groups to be able to laugh at themselves, or the world around them. I like it -- don't try and pass the look using it ;) ... but for parties and non-serious events it may work to your advantage! x

I think it's ok for those that can pull it off that way. Maybe when I was much, much, much younger, I could have. Never really wanted to though. It's more for the show than anything else I think. Myself... I'm happy just to be me.

I answered "I can't stand the drag queen look." but that's only for me wearing clothes and other apparel that are associated with that look.

I have no prejudice about other willing to have that Drag Quenn look if that is what they like to do. Some are absolutely fabulous in that type of clothes.

Hi Everyone,
Many thanks to all the gurlz and GGs that voted. Special thanks to those who posted comments.
This Saturday, I plan on going to a TG club in New York dressed as a drag queen. At this point, I will be wearing a short sequin dress, shiny pantyhose. sequin shoes, long gloves and a big wig, but not my largest. Which dress I wear is dependent on thing arriving in the mail.

On February 15, Crossdressers International will be having their Valentine's dinner. I will be wearing a red with gold long gown and my second biggest wig, a dark brown one. Pictures will be posted.

and what's wrong with getting some attention once in awhile? hmmmm?
just think it would be fun...but now a lifestyle look..:heehee:

I get a little confused with this and maybe someone can clue me in.

What I visualize when you speak of "traditional" drag queens, is someone who is doing a parody of a woman. A character if you will, sort of like Dame Edna or one of The Pantomime Dames in the U.K., or that big blond who was in all those John Water's Pictures. If we are speaking of that type of performer or someone who dresses like that, hanging around at The Bar, No, don't much care for that look. The heavy, chalky makeup and the very large painted on eyebrows and lips, the too short skirts with the panties on display, just not something that gets me excited.

On the other hand, when I currently go to drag shows, I don't really see "Drag Queens". Like at The Parliament House, almost all of the performers are described as "female impersonators", and they look very feminine and glamorous. Yes they wear costumes, lots of spangles and very tight, but they also have boob jobs and probably spend their time 24/7 as a woman, their makeup is too good not to be doing it all the time. You really don't get the feeling of a "parody," more like sincere imitation. I also understand that most of these Gals eventually opt for SRS.

So, is there now a distinction and a further dividing into another classification? Seems like that this is the case. Anybody who can give me some education on this, we would appreciate it.

Peace and Love, Joanie

Hi Joanie,
When I was talking about the drag queens I admire the looks of, they are generally gay men that only dress in public when they perform. The idea of passing is generally not an issue When I dress draggy, I will wear a very big wig, a brightly colored dress, preferably sequin and big jewelry. Drag queens are of all types and some of them indeed have transitioned. I knew there would be a lot of despising the drag queen look. However I underestimated it.

Hi Everyone,
Just to show the forum members how I dress as a drag queen. Forum members can see pictures of me from Saturday here: http://crossdressers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51272
Again, I like the loud clothing and big hair. I do not like facial distortion.

I think part of the DQ look is to be entertaining after all when you go to the shows they are Entertainers just like Elvis or Judas Priest would be in the music world. Also going to a DQ show is a place CD's can safely go where there are other CD's. Also DQ's make money$$$, while when we go to DQ shows we spend it.

Personally I wouldn't dress the DQ look. Its just not me, I a little more conservative.

Exactly.

Like Amanda pointed out, it was the drag queens that threw the first rocks at Stonewall.

I'm an attention *****, so drag is right up my alley. I have yet to actually get on stage, but every time I see a drag show I get more and more tempted to do it. I need to find a good amateur night around here and have a go.

OMG! RuPaul! Beautiful, statuesque, and absolutely the most ravishing draq queen ever! Rita, I would've loved to have voted in your poll, but the selections offered were too narrow. Not all of us care to present publicly en femme, and the option of enjoying the presentation en homme was omitted. Would've been my choice! BTW, Rita, Lisa, and Ms Jordan, you look marvelous! You go girls!

I voted can't stand the look, but quite true, I'd never want to do it myself, I'm not interested in that, or for that matter in fetish gear, I don't know if I'd want to go to a drag queen show, whether dressed or not. I like to be as much as possible like an everyday woman, granted a feminine one who prefers skirts and dresses and heels, but just everyday. I do have a nurses uniform, but a genuine one, because that's what some women wear to work in. I don't hate others who like different things though, we're all different and that's how it should be.
