Hi all, i have going to work en femme for 3 months now. I still use my male name but have asked several people that are comfortable with me to use my female name. I also have gone to the U. of Minn. for there help. What i have been wondering is:
1) When you legally change your name & you are married what happens?
2) If you file taxes does this not send up red flags? 2 woman married????

I know there are more things to but these were the first, so can someone enlighten me so i can make further choices for my life.
Thank you all.
:hugs:  Janelle

A name change will have no effect on your marriage or taxes, as a matter of fact I'm getting ready to start the process next week.

Karen I believe has it right.

Just don't be trying to change that Social Security number.

But if you change your name doesn't SS have to know? & what about getting bene's when its time to retire?

SS tracks you with a number. It's called your Social Security number. That's how benefits are paid.

Once you have your name legally changed you can go down to the SS office with the official court document and have your name changed for your SS account. They don't care about the gender of the SS recipeint. But be forwarned do to the Patriot Act you are going to end up with two seperate names for your SSN, which is something that you can't get around. Pre 9/11 the SS Administration would change your name and all the records to reflex your new name and would eliminate your old name from all of their records. Just another thing that us transwoman have to accept unfortunately.

One thing I'd like to add, my Social Security lawyer said that changing your name won't cause any problems as far as Social Security is concerned.
