I just got back from my Friday night nail appointment. I was due for my fill on my gel nails, so my tech did that, then I got a nice parafin treatment. For my polish, she chose a base coat of Haken Tiffany Glass Ceiling and then a diagonal corner of Haken Don't Make Me Laugh (OK, I didn't make up these polish names! :)) Then a thin diagonal gold glitter stripe to finish them off.
I got a complete set of photos covering the steps for a gel fill, and the parafin and polish. If anyone wants to see them, I will do another step-by-step thread.

...and one more pic. I wasn't sure if I liked this polish job, as I usually like just solid colors - but it has grown on me a little :)

Wow, those are great looking nails! Having my nails done is on my "to do" list. I think it is wonderful that you take such good care of yourself.
Do you think it would work if I printed out a copy of your nails and glued them on tonight?? Hmmm, probably not. May be best to wait for the real thing.

Your nails look fab Dana :D Quick q.... you say gel nails are a pretty new thing where you live... how new?? In the UK Beauticians have been training to do gel nails for quite some time. I know as far back as 2001/2 they have been doing Gel nails here.

Tamara xTamara, 2002 was only 2 years ago basically, that makes it a fairly new procedure. Plus, I believe that gels started in Europe and took a little longer to get here.
Think about this: every salon is set up to do acrylics, they have the training, materials and clients for acrylic nails. Now, overnight they are not going to change, so it takes a while for "new" stuff to catch on.
At any rate, I have just sent this question to my tech....

DanaJ,
You seem like the person to ask about nails. I am growing out my nails but I have one that was damaged (smashed finger some time ago) and it is much shorter than the others. Is there a good artificial nail that I could have done that would match my naturals? I wear OPI Nail Envy matte finish on my natural nails all the time, so they have a little bit of shine, but not too much. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Michelle, I'll try to help. It all depends on what you want to do. Would you mind going to a nail salon? How short is short? Will the nail grow out at all?
Yes, trust me, a good nail tech can fix anything! Depending on how much you have to work with, they could do a tip with a gel or acrylic overlay, and it will look fairly natural.
If you want to take this further, we can chat via PMs or Yahoo Messenger if you have that.... unless you want to do it here....

Dana, your nails are absolutely beautiful. Do you leave them like that all the time? And where do you have them done? I'd love to try it sometime.

I have a standing Friday night nail appt, I usually leave them done at least thru Saturday, and sometimes all weekend. I explained the story of how I found my nail tech in The Story of Dana (http://www.crossdressers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4678) thread.

Dear DanaJ,
Thanks for geting back to me. My short nail is currently about 1/4 inch from my fingertip. I don't want it too long--my other natural nails are about 1/8 to 3/16 inch past the fingertip. I'm currently wearing a Broadway Nails "Natural Deceptions" glue-on nail, but it doesn't look very natural. I tried to use OPI Nail Envy (matte finish), which is what I normally wear on my real nails, to make it better, but it still doesn't look very good. I might be willing to go to a nail salon, but if there are any good at-home remedies, I'd like to hear them. Thanks for your help.

MichelleHNot a problem Michelle, I am glad to help. Will the short nail in question grow past your fingertip, or is it not growing?
My nails are the same length as yours. What I would suggest is getting an overlay (gel or acrylic) on top of your natural nails. I have gels on mine, and they look so natural that no one has made any bad comments.
Do you have Yahoo Messenger? We could chat about this realtime and it may be easier. I can also share more pix and details that may help...

Dear DanaJ,
If it's OK with you, I'd rather communicate through the forum--I can only get online occasionally. My nail will grow--if fact its doing well. All I want is a temporary fix. If I go to a salon, which would you recommend, gel or acrylic?
Have you ever had silk wraps? If I try to do it at home, what are the alternatives?
Thanks, MichelleH
DanaJ

Well, if you want a temporary fix right now, there is only one way to do it. A tip with overlay is the only way. And - for a professional fix, it may be a little short for a proper tip. I will ask my nail tech tomorrow night when I go...
I would definitely recommend gel, but only if you can find a good qualified tech. Gels are thinner, do less damage to your natural nail and look more natural. Acrylics are thicker (but stronger), more noticible, are not as good for your natural nails but they are cheaper and a good acrylic tech will be easier to find.
As far as what you can do at home, I think you are doing as much as you can. It would be best to just leave it alone and not mess with it a lot, let it grow out naturally. Or get a professional to take a look at it.
Silk wraps are OK, they will add more strength to your nails. The one or two times I had this done (on a repair) it always seemed as if I could see it underneith the gel. Oh yeah, you know that even on a silk wrap, they have to put something over the silk after it is glued to your nail.
