In the Sufi tradition, there is a direction of spiritual practice which is called Malamati Sufism. It can be translated to "the path of blame"
It has it's root in the notion that if you challenge societal norm, you will meet redicule and so put yourself in a vulnerable spot. Out of this volnurability, you are supposed to grow in spiritual strength. In other words, those sufi's challenged themselves to be at odds with the norm of the day.
I often feel the same way being a transexual person. I know I cannot change my sexuality, but it is an obstacle in society and so, in a way, I walk the Malamati path. I keep my back straight and move from my heart in everything I do. This is not an easy path, I know, and we often see sisters here who give up, or take a break for a while. I can understand that. But then it calls them back again, this "Walk on the edge" this strange "path of blame" which can make us stronger and more beautiful, even make our world a more beautiful place to be. For me, being TS always comes back to this wonderous condition of my heart. How is my heart today? will I be able to walk my path?

Sounds like the idea 'what doesn't kill me makes me stronger.' We should do what we believe is right despite what popular opinion may be.
