View Full Version : Places to go, things to do

Since I'm not really into the club or bar scene, I'm always looking for places to go or things to do while dressed (see my previous post for my latest outing).

Every place you can go while dressed can be thought of as having a certain risk (of getting outed, 'risk' of having to interract with somebody when you aren't ready for it, or even risk of physical harm). I think I've found a few places that are safe for people that want the lowest risk... In fact, I've gotten into a bit of a rut now that I'm comfortable.

First, a grocery store. Grocery stores don't have lots of gangs of kids, you are left alone (no sales associates come up to you to see if you need help), and most people there are too focussed on their own business to really notice you unless you really stand out. To reduce the stress even further, you can go in to shop, but not really buy anything. Just walk around with a carriage or basket, then leave when you are done. After a few visits, move up to making a small purchase.

The same goes for large bookstores like Barnes and Noble or Borders. You are in among lots of people, but essentially alone. Again, not many 'kids' hang out in book stores (that in itself is a bit sad, but a matter for another day).

Next you have large department stores. You have a bit more of a chance that a SA will come up to you, and there are more likely to be groups of kids.

Finally, as far as shopping goes, you have malls. I don't like malls much anyway but they are attractive to a lot of CDs. I really don't like spending much time dressed in a mall... too many bored teens with nothing to do (until you come along!)

There are quite a few things I haven't really tried yet, but would like to work my way up to.

Reading in a library (easy)

Eating out (harder, lots of interraction, you are kind of 'trapped' there until you pay the bill if anything goes wrong)

Seeing a movie (a little bit of stress at the beginning when buying the ticket and getting in, but after that it shouldn't be a problem unless you sit next to somebody who wants to cause a fuss)

Finally, my 'someday' activity. Someday, I'd love to take an entire night school class en femme. I can imagine wearing a different outfit for every class over several weeks (long skirts, short skirts, dresses...), sitting for long periods of time in a crowded room with other students on all sides of me.

What can you add to this list? Maybe I can get some ideas about other placed to go and things to do.

I just go where the GGs go. But then I wanted to go Home Depot while out with my gal-pals last Saturday. They said no. Maybe we might run into Billy Bob with his John Deere hat and suspenders.

On my first outing I went to an area of town which is known for it's liberal attitude. There are know lesbian and gay bars there so I thought the attitude would be favorable to CDing. I didn't do the bars but walked the streets and window shopped, even stopping in several stores. If you have such an area in your town, I would go there.
On the other hand, every town has an area to avoid. Do not go there!

I really like your list, Cristi. I've done some of the same things, gone to the same kinds of places, and I aspire to some of the same new (for me) experiences--the movies, in particular. I have not yet gone to the supermarket, but I think that it's a great idea. And I really like the idea of taking a class. I don't know if I could ever do that one, but I'm going to give it a lot of thought and consideration. Summer classes in this area last only seven weeks, so that might be the term that I would try. The class sessions are, of course, longer.
I think that going to a zoo would be a good one. At a lot of zoos, there is an admission charge which means that you might have to wait in a line to pay, but there usually is an easy exit. You wouldn't be locked in. The animals are interesting and engross most people's attention.
Another possibility in my area is a casino where most people are enrapt in their gambling, but these places tend to be smoky and a little sleazy, so they might be dangerous.
I hope to read more about the places you visit. I'll share my visitations too.

Go to a live theater performance, a symphony orchestra concert or ballet, an art fair in a park, any event of the kind of culture that they would have classes on in a university. Got to a Sunday service in a Unity, a Unitarian, or an Episcopal church. Go to an outdoor music festival, especially reggae or a Phish-style jam band. Go to a Renaissance faire. Go to a Rainbow Gathering. Go to a Browncoat Shindig (you can dress as River).

I like that idea! Plus, at a zoo there are plenty of benches along the paths, so you could just sit out in the open and 'people watch' (sometimes the most interesting animal to observe...)

Hmmm... maybe... but I'm betting Kaylee has more fun. :) and wears things more like the clothes I'd like...

Yea... People watching. It can be very entertaining. I've sat on the boardwalk at the beach and watched people a lot of times. It seems that some people just love to have a miserable time, ever notice?
The kids seem to have a lot of fun though.
If you have grandkids you can always take them to the park or as mentioned previously to the zoo... Kids love the zoo as much or more than we do.
Sometimes just a long walk along a river or stream can be enlightening.
There is so much one can do and so little time to do it, the list is endless.

I'm with you on the Bars. I have found when in the Gay bars, you dont fit in, gays dont like guys, who dress like gals.:thumbsdn: Same token when I'm in a Lez. Bar, the gals like gals, not guys dressed like gals.:thumbsdn: However theres always one exception, If you'r ever in the Cincinnati area check out Rosies Bar in Covington Ky.  We also have several Antique Malls in our area that I visit during the week. Not many people at this time, No Sales people rushing up to you to see what you are rather than what you want. Payless Shoe Stores I have found are always receptive to C.D.ers.
