I hope there are a few engineers and techs. here as well as some machinists.

There are two things that I have seen in movies that would be great to have.

1. From "Total Recall"... That nice nail color pen that you just tap the color you want and then tap each nail and they instantly take on perfect shiny color.

2. From "The Fifth Element"... The Eye-Box gizmo. Just place it over your eyes, select a picture of the eye look you want, close your eyes, press a button and poof... Instant shadow and liner... Picture perfect.

How about it. Thinking about all the inovations that are available today... Couldn't it be done?

I guess I'm just dreaming, but it would be nice, wouldn't it.

How about the "instant" body armor from the original Star gate movie? I immediately thought of the possible applications of that when I first saw the movie.

I'd like to have one of those voice changing patches they had in the mission impossible movies.

Gee Wiz... I forgot about a lot of those other things. Wow! Y'all are really up to date on all of this stuff. I didn't do a search, but I'll bet that this thing has been done before. It's hard to talk about something that hasn't been discussed before on this site. And they say that women aren't all that technical minded. Paashaw.

Theres actually a fabric that has been developed in japan that changes colour, so if you just turn that into press ons, down side is it only goes flourecent green and blue:heehee:

I think a halo deck would be kind of cool like the one from star trek, then you could program everyone to not react.

Actually there're working on something called E-Ink that was only black & white, but now it's available in color. Here is an excerpt from an article I receintly read....

Due to its outstanding advantages, several products employing E-ink technology are being released or are under development. These include electronic books, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), flexible clocks, Flash memory sticks with usage indicators, indoor weather stations, and more. Recently, a color version of E-ink has also been introduced — a development that will further diversify the range of electronic ink-based products that are possible. As this technology matures, more and more developers are likely to jump on the bandwagon so that we can expect to see more E-ink products in the future.

You're watching too much TV. Applying nail polish isn't onerous. Actually, getting a manicure is rather pleasant and relaxing. Doing eye makeup is actually one of the most creative and fun part of dressing. Why would you want to do away with some of the best parts?

Warm regards,
Christina Nicole

I like the wardrober on The Jetsons, Jane or Judy can just stand there, and the machine dresses them at the push of a button. Now I would pay big $$$ for that. Imagine, somebody comes over unexpected, and BAM at the push of a button, you are in drab. :2c:

You have to remember, any of those inventions will be a long, long way off. Remember Capt. Kirk's communicator in Star Trek? We're only just now seeing cel-phones modeled after that design, and I think their transporter technology is still in the theoretical stages, so something really advanced like click and drag (tehee) nails might not occur in our lifetimes

I've read the book "The Physics of Star Trek". Out of everything done in all the series, the transporter seems to be the most unlikely. If anyone saw the series of movies from the 1960's "The Fly", you can see just how dangerous this could potentially be. Not to mention the fact that there are just too many cellular dynamics going on during any given microsecond in the body, the computer to hold such information would have to be huge. Theoretically, if it were possible, all you would have to do is insert the appropriate data and you could be disintegrated and re-assembled in whatever form you chose, not to mention what clothes you may want to wear.

I'm with dods460 on this one and would love a Star Trek holo deck.

Also, what about the movie, Strange Days? That movie had a cap that you would wear on your head that could playback experiences that other people recorded. The only thing was that you saw and felt what the recorder saw and felt as well.....kind of like virtual reality to the max. One of the guys that were checking out the technology on the black market in the movie was watching and feeling a recording of a woman taking a shower and caressing her breasts.

As long as you're going with Total Recall why not the virtual reality machine Arnie uses for his cyber-vacation? You could just strap yourself into that baby and be not just a girl but a really gorgeous one on an exotic vacation or everyday life or whatever you wanted... I'd be happy if someone would invent adjustable breast implants. I'm thinking something like a balloon anchored under your pec muscles with a port where you could inject/remove silicone at will. Of course you'd need someway to make the skin adjust otherwise you'd pump yourself up to a D cup then go back to guy mode and have empty bags of skin hanging down your chest, not a good look for anyone. ;)

Hi Marie!

Thanks for the thread! We haven't had a sci-fi one for a while. I've been dreaming about e-ink (or e-paper) for decades, so I'm glad they've finally gotten around to inventing it. :)

My favourite sci-fi CDing gizmo that's not too far-fetched is nanotech breast forms that attach themselves to your chest seamlessly, have natural body temperature, & they even communicate to your nervous system, so they feel real. When they detach, they do so instantly, leaving no traces.

Another nice idea is a nanotech bodysuit. In storage, this looks like a small lump of putty. When activated, it spreads itself over your entire body, giving you perfect-looking smooth skin. It covers short body hair, making it invisible, but it flows over longer hair, making it longer, thicker & more lustrous. I suppose it wouldn't defy the laws of physics for it to also be capable of body-shaping.

For those who don't know nanotech, I'm talking about collections of tiny robots the size of biological cells, or smaller, that can be programmed & communicated with. These gizmos of mine would consist of billions of these tiny machines.

how about a spell to make you the oppisite sex for a few hours like in sibrina the teenage witch:devil:Hey Donna, we're doing science/science fiction in this thread, not magic. :) But if you want to start a thread on fantasy/magic CDing, I'm sure lots of us would love to contribute.

I definitely agree, Christina Nicole. But a gizmo that instantly removed all make-up, would be rather handy. Especially if it did nail polish as well. :D

Yes, managing the huge amount of data in transporter or even replicator technology would be a nightmare. And in the series, the transporter buffer is big enough to hold somebody, the data doesn't just get streamed to the destination.

A good transporter could not only do your make-up, it could eradicate wrinkles & all other signs of aging. :)

:hugs:

She's trying to find it now...

So let's see.... Communicator to cell phones of today took about 40 years.
Sooo, the fingernail thing in Total Recall, which came out in 1990, should be here about the year 2030. I don't know if I can wait that long. (*sigh*)

Believe or not, there is a teleporter that scientist are playing with. It is called "Quantum Teleportation". Right now they can only teleport photons, but it does work. They also playing around with a form of Faster Than Light Communications. Here they take a photon and split it into two quantum bits. You keep one and send the other someplace else. Then if you cause one to rotate CW, the other will also rotate CW. So far they have not been able to measure any delay when the first one starts to rotate and the second starts to rotate. ALso they have put these on opperate sides of the earth and still can not see any delay. They therioze that it happens no matter how far appart the two quantum bits are. Both of these have been written up in "Scientific America".

Transporters and such seem very far fetched and, as has been said, we don't yet have the computer power to do anything like that. But remember, it was only 50 years or so ago, that we couldn't have put a common calculator in our closet. Now, you can hold it in the palm of your hand. With the way technology keeps advancing, who knows what the future will bring.

I can remember early calculators. The one I had came as a kit with "Nixie" tubes for the display, and were about the size of an old adding machine. The cost was $139.00. That was maybe 1970 I think.
Ge-wiz, we've come a long way. You can get a watch with a calculator and a phonebook built right in now. And I understand they're working on adding a cellphone to it.

How a modern nixie-tube clock.... http://www.electricstuff.co.uk/nixclock.html

I'd settle for a complete head to toe body suit, would never have to shave, style my wig, or attempt to apply make-up again....

kris_dresser, they do make a body suit that covers the entire torso, but they are a bit pricey. It does make you perfectly shaped though.

I was looking through my favorites, or bookmarks as some browsers refer to them, and I can't seem to find a link to it.

But, there are full body suits out there, if you look.

Something close to the nail pen is entirely possible in the not too distant future. The catch is that I think it's unlikely they will be able to make one that will work on the nail itself. I would envision it would still require you to paint your nails with something, and that substance would have properties that the pen CAN change.

Yes Kim, that was my thought too, or some type of press-on nail, with a RF enabled power supply in each nail simular to the cards worn on your lapel that automatically unlocks security doors.
