Even if I didn't accidentally out myself, I got a taste of why I should stay in the closet.
My coworkers asked what I was reading, and I said _She's not the man I married_ , about a crossdresser who might become a transsexual. The reactions I got weren't horrible, but they weren't encouraging:
"lawsuit"
"men in the ladies room"
I changed the subject to the weather.
Wow! And it was just "what are you reading?"!!!!
the closet is looking better--if it's not too late.

Well, what do you expect ?
It's true that there are a lot prejudices and resentments out there. Those are the first things you usually here from people that never cared or thought about a subject.
But that's the same for books about model railway or quantum mechanics.
The first things I get to hear usually when I say that I am a chemist is:
Umph ... well ... interesting, you can make drugs and explosives then ?
It's time to explain a few things then, but not to stay in the "closet".

Hi, might I suggest, being very careful at work. Some places can find many excuses to get rid of you, even if they have a policy against gender discrimination. One trip to the drinking fountain, can be a dismissal for goofing off. Just be careful, it's your livelyhood...BJ

Don't read books like that at work most people will express one thing in a group to sound macho and by themselves say something else. But don't stay in the closet going out is so much fun. Meeting people like ourselves the interacting with other people and GGs are so much fun when dress. I think they don't feel that we are going to hit on them so they talk to us.

One of my hobbies is Model Railroading and usually the first thing said when I mention it is "Oh,you PLAY with TOY trains". I just smile and then I start education process.
1. First WE OPERATE them, we don't play with them.
2. Today's Model Trains are not like the trains you had as a kid. A typical well made engine will cost $300 (HO scale).
3. Model Train Engines have computer chips in them that allow you to operate them like real train engines, including sound.
By the time I tell them number three, they either are bored with the subject or want to hear more about it. Mostly they get bored and change the subject. LOL

I've found that pretty much any interests outside of drinking and football is completely lost on the general population.
Try telling people "I ride a motorcycle" or "I race sports cars". I've heard "Isn't that dangerous?" so many times that I don't even bring up my interests to other people because I don't care to explain them.

People are pretty closed-minded about anything new or different from their usual experience, and I must say, that most people are pretty narrow in their experiences. So you have to expect that crossdressing will be regarded as "bizarre" or "aberrent" by a large segment of the society--particularly on first glance. Even with education, lots of people will blanch at the idea much less the practice.
However, that being said, I would encourage you not to hide too much deeper but just to be a little more careful when and where you read your CD/TS material.

I would not stay in the closet for them. Go out if you want to. I must say, work is only a part of my life and it would not be right to let that one part rule my life.

Fear is an emotion which we all experience at some time or another. "Common sense" is often the expression of an opinion dressed up as fact.

You didn`t say whether your co-workers were male or female.Men especially are not accepting or understanding of us.I think you`d get 100% rejection there.Women are better, but not most. It`s common sense to stay closeted unless you`re absolutely sure you can trust the person.:hugs: :itsok: Angela.:bunny: :<3: :bunny: :GE: :rose2: :bunny: :rose2:

Princess,
It may not have been the best choice to read that book at work, but you did. So now you will have to deal with it. People, (especially men), at work are often closed minded and cruel. Once a "rumor" starts it is difficult to cap it but that is what needs to be done. I wouldn't give them any more ammunition to use against you. Lay low.
That doesn't mean that you should remain in the closet though...just be careful when you wander out and don't go out as often as before. Maybe go to places where you are very unlikely to ne recognized.
People will be watching you more closely so you will need to respond in kind, that is if that is your desired outcome. That's what I would have to do under the same circumstances and it is only going to dissipate with time.
Good luck hon.... we're here to help so let us know what we can do to help you.

In most work places, or male groups you will get the responses you got. they have to support the group culture to belong. Had you said you'd been to the Gay pride parade you would have gotten the same replys, the are preprogramed. Its like a bunch of 13 yr olds, say gay and they all go gross, because its what is expected of the group, no necessisarily what they think. If you'd said you were reading Moby Dick they would have all left with out a word. Don't let water cooler chit chat guide your decisions.
