Well... IMO, Alix, Alex, Al, Ali, Allie, or basically any shortening of Alexander could also be a shortening of Alexandra/ Alexa/ Alexis and is therefore a unisex name. If it's that you're worried about, I couldn't be. Toby... That's a bit harder to explain, but then I've known a lot of girls with male nicknames, too. I call my friend Jamie, James or Jameson and nobody bats an eye at that.
As for her guessing... Well, it seems to me she doesn't really have a problem with it but, what's done is done. Sorry you were possibly outed, though. But, who knows, it might end up being a good thing.

I'd say to try to remain calm about it. If you don't make a big deal about it, this person probably won't think too much about the name thing either. If Prince can change his name to a symbol, I think you're ok looking to masculine names. Even if they do put it together, I guess sooner or later the truth does come out, but I can understand why you'd be freaking out. *peaks out of his own closet that he hides out in* I've tended to come out only to friends that live far enough away that they won't slip something to my family who I haven't come out yet too. Anyway, really hope it works out for you and things aren't tense.
