Hello,

Well, I just got back from Philly after having both of the testicles removed. I had the operation on Monday 12th March 2007. All seems to be going according to the doctors game plan and should get the stiches out 3rd of April 2007. I am still spotting down there due to the fact that I just can't quite stay off of my feet as much as was told to do. Work starts back up for me on March 19th. I hope they will take it easy on me for the first few weeks.
Lucky for me its a sit down job.

Wish me luck

Suzzie

Hey, I hope you have a fast recovery Suzzie. That operation is something I've thought about for a while now, but I really don't have the money.

Thanks all,

So far I have not felt any differences or had any change in my mannerisum (sp) as far as I know. I didn't ask that question to the doc after the operation. Dr. Kimmel did the work in Phily. All is going OK but I am still spotting some. Each time that I go to the rest room to pee, there is of varing degrees of spotting due to physical movement. I am trying to stay off of my feet as much as i can but it is not enough. I was told to get the stiches out in 2-3 weeks after but if I am still spotting I dont know what I am going to do. I think I will try some more Ice to try and help it along. Any one else have this problem and can offer and helpful hint?

From Answers.com:

spironolactone

Spironolactone (marketed as Aldactone®, Novo-Spiroton®, Spiractin®, Spirotone®, or Berlactone®) is a synthetic 17-lactone steroid which is a renal competitive aldosterone antagonist in a class of pharmaceuticals called potassium-sparing diuretics, used primarily to treat ascites in patients with liver disease, low-renin hypertension, hypokalemia, and Conn's syndrome. On its own, spironolactone is only a weak diuretic, but it can be combined with other diuretics. Due to its anti-androgen effect, it can also be used to treat hirsutism, and is a common component in hormone therapy for male-to-female transgendered people. It is also used for treating hair loss and acne in women.

Mechanism of action
Spironolactone inhibits the effect of aldosterone by competing for intracellular aldosterone receptor in the distal tubule cells. This increases the secretion of water and sodium, while decreasing the excretion of potassium. Spironolactone has a fairly slow onset of action, taking several days to develop and similarly the effect diminishes slowly. Spironolactone has anti-androgen activity by binding to the androgen receptor and thus preventing it to interact with dihydrotestosterone.[1]

Pharmacokinetics

In short, spironolactone blocks male testosterone, a steroid hormone produced primarily in the testes and responsible for the development and maintenance of male secondary sex characteristics.

If you go to your GP to get the stitches (or staples) out he/she will be able to tell if it is time. 2-3 weeks seems like a long time to me. You might want to visit your GP before then, say at 10 days post op, especially if you are worried about how it is going.

I am not sure what you mean when you say "spotting". Is this frank blood? Is it pink tinged fluid? Where is it coming from? The incision? The penis? Is there any pain? Any swelling? Redness? Heat? Do you have a temperature? I would need a bit more info to be able to give you intelligent advice but I will be happy to do so. PM me if you wish with any medical questions and I will answer them to the best of my ability within the scope of my practice.

Sharon-- very nice research on Spirolactone.

MJ-- there would be no need for her to take spiro following the orchiectomy (testicular removal), as the testes produce the bulk of body's testosterone. The remainder is produced by the pituitary gland and the adrenal gland. Those trace amounts are needed for basic body functioning, as even gg's produce them.

Wishing you a speedy recovery, Suzzie!
