I had to fill out a form at work last night and when I got to the part that asked me my gender I was surprised to see male, female, and unknown. I was thrilled and put in unknown. Now I do realize that my gender is transgender however it seems like the Canadian Military is actually ok with this and understand that there is more then just two genders. So now I can't help but wonder how many other surveys now have a third box when the question of gender or your sex is asked. I know that for myself if I have fill out any other forms that ask that question and unknown it isn't an option I will be sure to add it in from now on. I think we are being more and more accepted but or own fears are keeping us hidden.

It's encouraging, Michelle, but personally I would rather have "other" than "unknown" or, better yet, have no box to check at all.

Since "Gender" is supposed to be what is between our ears, recently I have been very tempted to mark the "female" box, but I then check the "male" box because I know the form is incorrectly using "Gender" and is referring to our sex. But yes it would be nice not to have to check it at all, or have a third box like other.

I hate those bloody things. I always flippin' cringe and grimace when faced with them.

Hah! That's a bloody good point!
I think I will start marking the correct one with no hesitation from now on :p
Because as you point out, and as I quoted crossly to someone today "The only way you can tell a person's gender identity is if they tell you!!"

I was at the doctor's office the other day updating some forms, when I got to the box that said gender, I started writing M before I realized what I was doing. I wanted to write FtM but the box wasn't big enough, and I'm not sure the receptionist would have appreciated that.

Yep it's good news there should be more boxes to choose from especially in this day and age xx Felix :hugs:

Claire made me giggle the other day when she filled out a form. The choices were Male and Female - so she put a big slash through male, making a statement and being technically correct for the moment ;)

You know what really gets to me? Surveys sent to our LGBT office about gender and sexuality which only have two choices. It seems like that would be the place most likely to get more options.

What I usualy do is either leave it blank as though I didn't see it, or put an "X" through the female box. To me, it's X as in "Wrong!", but to them it's the answer they're looking for. I do prefer to leave it blank though.
Once in high school I filled in both bubbles (it was one of those forms you had to use No. 2 pencil so the machine could scan it) and ended up in detention for it. But I served it proudly because I'd done what I needed to do at that point in time.

That's pretty much what Claire did this weekend, a slash through the box and the word Male, all the other boxes were neatly checked ;)

Young man, I don't think you've done enough detention time. Please report to my class after school.
And don't tell anyone....:p
I haven't had to check a box lately - it will be interesting the next time I do. (as long as I don't end up in detention afterward; I heard that Ms Kez makes you work hard after school!)
