Hi all. I am wondering where do you all go to get make overs? I have been looking at a couple of places that specialise in TG makeovers but are there any other options (not doing it myself) that do not cost $300. I am getting a professional make over in a couple of months but it is not something I can afford to do on a regular basis. I have read a lot of good things about MAC. But do they do the make over in private or is out in the open? Thanks, KS.

Kitty,

Don't know about the major cosmetic company stands at local department stores. Maybe you can ask one of the SAs if they would do a private makeover outside of work. Also, look around in your area or in a nearby large city to see if they have any CD/TG local associations or groups. They could probably easily direct you to local people that can do it for you discretely and cheaper.

Hi,

I was fortunate to attend a make up workshop with other CD
http://www.crossdressers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55203
That was about $35. Advantage was that I also learned a lot in applying make-up.
Difference off course with a make-over with wigs padding is a different story

Hi, KS. I know the MAC counter in my local Macy's is right on a main aisle running the length of the building, and is right next to an escalator. So, there's a lot of traffic there. But, I'm bound and determined to go there for a makeover as soon as the opportunity is right. I will go soon after the store opens, on a weekday, so it won't be as crowded. I'll be going en femme, but I am prepared to divulge that I am a CDer. I understand there is no cost for the makeover, but I do plan to purchase some of the same stuff they use on me. Should be interesting.

I highly recommend MAC. If you are concerned about privacy, check to see if they have a "stand-alone" store in your area, they may have private rooms (Bloor St in Toronto does if you are ever in town here).

Hi,

Believe it or not I have had luck with Mary Kay ladies or even Avon ladies. There was also one independent cosmetic company that could give you all the privacy you need but I cannot recall the name. Good Luck

Kitty,

I went to my local Merle Norman shop and had a makeover a couple of months ago. I heard they were very CD friendly and they it was wonderful. The lady who did my makeover made me feel really comfortable. And I learned a lot from her. I don't now if there is a Merle Norman near you but if its anything like the one in Portland it would be great. It's a stand alone shop. I've never had the nerve to go into the mall and sit in the chair at a makeup counter.

The wonderful lady who did my makeover told me a great story too - a couple of times she has had men come in who "lost a bet" and had to get a full makeover. She said based on the way they looked at themselves in the mirror they probably didn't have a bet at all.

Try a Mary Kay rep. I scheduled time with one just to get some products and color ideas and she was ready to do a make-over on me. I was in guy mode and not quite ready for that, but buying $100 of product and getting a make-over as well sounds like a good deal to me!

I wound up stoping at a MAC drab and just told the MAC artist I was a cd looking for beard cover. After a little pause as she processed that, she brought me over to the foundations and started to apply different shades to my face. She explained I was her first (cd) but she was great and took the time to ge the right match. This was 5 PM on a weekday in Macy's front window. I was nervous at first (not what I had planned) but she mad me feel comfortable, and from what I could tell no one in the store cared that a male was at MAC having foundation applied. I was stunned, but also also happy and bought the foundation. It is great, their on line help is also fabulous.

I will go to a MAC store for a make-over in the near future I just need to fit it into my schedule

Hope my experience was not a fluke.

The MAC here has chairs just inside the large opening in the mall making you very visable. Screw everyone else, if they don't like you getting your makeup it's their problem not yours.

Thanks for all the info ladies. Nice to see that you have more confidence than I do. But I must say I am getting better.

Maddie I am totally looking forward to seeing the pics and I bet the other girls are too. Hope it goes well. Night all, KS.

I get many makeovers at local salons - just call ahead and ask :)

I've had my makeup done at a beauty college. I called ahead and told them what I wanted and made an appointment. It was great fun for both the students and for me. They have always done a good job and the best part is the price, ten bucks. Add a tip for the student and you have a makeover for only twenty dollars, quite the bargain.

Kitty try Merle Norman's or Bare Essentials they in malls and sometimes in strip malls in Ohio. They do makeovers and most the time all you have to do is buy some makeup. Some have booths so you won't be seen.

I made an appointment and got a makeover at the Sephora store at the mall. It was a blast. Sitting right in front of the big opening and glass that separates the store from the mall might be too much exposure for some but I had a great time and the SO was really sweet. She even had a friend whose boyfriend was a CD.
