For anyone interested in trans legal issues, author Helen Boyd recently gave a very interesting talk that she has just posted to her blog (myhusbandbetty.com). The theme is the inconsistency of laws regarding trans folk.
She talked about passports and sexual satisfaction as a test for marriage annulments. (That last one is really scary).
But my favorite part was an example she gave of the inconsistency among state laws: because Texas does not recognize trans people's gender changes AND does not recognize gay marriage, but can't stop trans people from marrying, Texas is effectively allowing same-sex marriage for trans people (ie, a post-op ftm can legally marry a genetic male in Texas, which, ironically, they could not do in New York). The irony is that NY disallows it precisely because they DO legally recognize a gender change.
Ouch.

Thanks, Michelle, that's interesting about Texas. It's really disappointing to me that New York is so far behind in doing the right thing here. Sure, we have some laws in place to protect gay and trans people, but we have a long way to go to really get with the program about lots of things - particularly regarding the same-sex marriage issue. :(

But with same sex marriage still illegal, which position is the one that is more trans friendly: legally recognizing gender changes, or not doing so?

I suppose I want it all - and I want it all now. Being trans and gay, I want to see the right thing being done for everyone involved. That might sound greedy, but I'm not getting any younger and I don't want to wait anymore. Typical male impatience, huh? :p

I heard on the news that Spitzer will be introducing a Same-Sex marriage proposal, this or next week, just as he promised in his election campaign.
If that fails the will then try a civil union one.
Lets hope this state will have the guts to show some common sense and let every one live there own lives.
The only time gov. should come into our houses is in case of violence.
