Hi Girls. Last year was a long year for me business wise. I stopped exercising and working out – gained about twenty pounds. Things are better now (thank God). I am back on the treadmill and was intending to go back to weightlifting with a trainer on Wednesday. Here is my question. Any advice on what (if any) types of lifting to stay away from? I don’t want to bulk up in the wrong areas!

Melissa,

I Like 3 Runs a week, 4 days at the gym (love to eliptical 20 minutes) then do weights. I would stay away from alot of free weights, smaller weight, more reps. Keeps you tonned, with out adding alot of bulk.

So good to hear you are back to working out.

Hugs.

Hi Melissa. Fewer repitions with a higher weight is done for bulk and power so I would stay away from that. You can do higher repetitions with a lighter weight which will give you muscle toning and muscular endurance. Also make sure to do some stretching which can lengthen your muscles (less bulk) without losing strength. Good luck.

I do mainly cardio (running) and stretching. The only other stuff I do is bulk up my pects. Pects make good substitute breasts when put into a bra. :heehee:

Hi Melissa. I think you already know some of those answers. Lots of stretching, cardo, cooling down, and little (if any) powerlifting. I've been on variations of this regimen for six years and got awesome results despite a slow metabolism at the start.

Some powerlifting will help you though. Ab crunchers, hip abduction and adduction, and pectorals (rare) are my most common. I tried lat pulldowns and twists, but they target the arms way too strongly. If a machine starts to target your arms, you really want to stay well below your 1RM--or better yet not use it.

Good luck out there!

Stay away from heavy weight chest excersizes if you want to have more female looking breasts. Heavy weight and less reps produce bigger muscle. Since I stopped doing competitive power lifting, I concentrate on keeping my breasts in shape and hopefully stop the 'going south affect'. As for the rest of my body, I stay active. Of coarse, everyone is built different and what works for some may not work for you.

You got some pretty good advice here. As a physical educator and coach who uses strength training in my job I feel you will be fine with low weights and high reps.

One thing that worries me is that you said that you are going to meet with a trainer. Make sure you tell the trainer what you want to accomplish. If you leave it up to them with no imput on your part then you may not get the results you want. The best thing is to tell them you are a CD and don't want to do any lifts that will ruin the inage you want to create. If you find a trainer you feel comfortable enough with to share this information with then you are truly lucky.

Good luck, please share your story with us in the Lounge with the gurl exercise thread

I"m not sure if you should stay away from certain exercises, because in my opinion, your body will not become balanced. Like, lots of weightlifters only workout their upper body and neglect their legs. But in generaly, like other people have said, use lighter weights and higher reps. From personal experience, be careful of leg workouts (leg press and squats). My legs are fairly large and I have issues wearing women's pants. Although, potentially, these same exercises can give you a great butt. Cardio is always good along with a healthy diet.

This thread has motivated me to go back in training. The best training I have done was in several forms of Martial Arts. I was never in that kind of shape until I was training dailey regularly. THATS it I'm going back!! The only trouble is I will feel that I may have lost some of the level of where I was. mmmm so what I should get back quickly I hope?

...like you wouldn't believe. Do some lower back pulls too. Thats where you get a moderate weight on barbells, stand straight up with the weights and bend over with knees locked until the weight reaches the floor and then back up to a standing straight position.

Those are the secrets to a shapely derrierre. Lunges will help too.
