The record geek in me has to point out that Walk on the Wild Side is a Lou Reed song. Though I'd love to hear Iggy cover it...

For me, if I am near my mp3 collection, I tend to go with 60s girl bands when changing. Shirelles, the Ronettes, etc. Don't know why.

I like to take my time, maybe have a glass of chardonnay, and listen to late seventies disco, or early eighties dance music. In other words, the music I would have been listening to (and still enjoy) when I was in my late teens and early twenties had I been putting make up on and dressing in cute clothes if I'd been a girl.

Nowadays I'm catching up for lost opportunities of my youth :D

Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto, "The Girl from Ipanema."
It's a classic (like much of Jobim's work), but I've never liked her voice very much. My mother was a jazz singer in the early 60s, and she sings it as "Boy from Ipanema", so I don't associate it with CDing. :) But I can play it on guitar (if my nails aren't too long). :D

I love this song so much I even went to Rio to go to that beach. That is where I met some Brazillian trannys. Wow.
Very cool!

I listen to all sorts of music when dressing. I tend to avoid the more heavy/macho side of my music collection, though. If I listen to Hendrix or Led Zeppelin, I tend to listen to the softer tracks. I often listen to the classic Traffic album "The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" while dressing.

When en femme, I really enjoy The Clouds, an Australian semi-Indy group from the early 90s. They had two girls leading the band on vocals, bass & guitar, as well as doing most of the writing.

I also like the duo Everything But The Girl. I love listening to Portishead's "Glory Box" just as I'm finishing dressing:

From this time, unchained
We're all looking at a different picture
Thru this new frame of mind
A thousand flowers could bloom
Move over, and give us some room

Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be ee, a woman
I just wanna be a woman

...

So don't you stop, being a man
Just take a little look from our side when you can
Sow a little tenderness
No matter if you cry

:hugs:

And here I thought I was odd, compared to all the previous posts. I tend to listen to metal (esp. European metal bands) even when I'm dressed. Makes no difference to me. Although, I will admit that deep on the inside, I'm a huge Shania admirer.

Didn't Lou Reed sing, "take a walk on the wild side.

Yep. It was from Lou's second solo record, and produced by Bowie. I have one of those stray memories of sitting on my girlfriend's bed listening to that song with her. I had just started playing baritone sax at the time, so the sax solo may be what kept the scene in my memory all these years.

A couple more I would favor would be Rebel Rebel and Jean Genie by Bowie. I prefer the gender-bending stuff to the "girl-being-a-girl" type songs.

Wow, many good songs mentioned!

In guy mode, I am not big into country. However, I really enjoy Shania Twain when I'm getting dressed or traveling. Besides, "Man, I Feel Like a Woman", a couple others of hers "Forever and for always" and "Your still the One" are quite good too.

I was glad to see someone else mention Helen Reddy's "I am Woman"

I need to go to itunes and download some of the suggested songs.

Oh Yeah!
Before he Cheats-Carrie Underwood,
Anyway-Martina Mcbride,
and my all time favorite song by a female is :
I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack.
This should be everyone's hope for their life! I do have to say that I have a ton of female singers that I love listening to! Mostly country although Sheryl Crowe rocks it like nobody's business!!

I HOPE YOU DANCE
I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat
But always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances
But they're worth taking
Lovin' might be a mistake
But it's worth making
Don't let some hell bent heart
Leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out
Reconsider
Give the heavens above
More than just a passing glance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you
I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
Dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance
(Time is a wheel in constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who)
(Wants to look back on their years and wonder)
I hope you dance
(Where those years have gone)

(Tell me who)
I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their years and wonder)
(Where those years have gone)

Don't know if I consider this a "girly" song, but this one by Stevie Nicks, written by Bon Jovi, has a lot of lines that ring true for me (esp in italics!)...

"Sometimes It's a B*tch"

Well I've run through rainbows and castles of candy
I cried a river of tears from the pain
I try to dance with what life has to hand me
My partner's been pleasure...my partner's been pain

There are days when I swear I could fly like an eagle
And dark desperate hours that nobody sees
My arms stretched triumphant on top of the mountain
My head in my hands...down on my knees

Sometimes it's a bitch...sometimes it's a breeze
Sometimes love's blind...and sometimes it sees
Sometimes it's roses...and, sometimes it's weeds
Sometimes it's a bitch...sometimes it's a breeze

I've reached in darkness and come out with treasure
I've laid down with love and I woke up with lies
What's it all worth only the heart can measure
It's not what's in the mirror...but what's left inside

Chorus

You gotta take it as it comes
Sometimes it don't come easy

I've run through rainbows and castles of candy
And I've cried a river of tears from the pain
I tried to dance with what life had to hand me
And if I could...I'd do it all over again

Sometimes it's a bitch...sometimes it's a breeze
Sometimes love's blind...and sometimes it sees
Sometimes it's roses...and, sometimes it's weeds
Sometimes it's a bitch...sometimes it's a breeze
Sometimes the picture just ain't what it seems
You get what you want...but it's not what you need
Sometimes it's a bitch...sometimes...it's a breeze
Well it's a breeze...it's a breeze...it's a breeze..."

I certainly do listen to the 'classics' such as Shania Twain and even Girls Aloud (really must look more closely at the lyrics for "Biology") but I've identified with some other songs that are less obviously girlie but still seem to mean alot (to me at least) in connection with CDing:

Breathe - Anna Nalick
Paper Bag - Anna Nalick
Never Give Up - Jann Arden
Collapsed - Aly & Aj

Back on the slightly more girly and less serious track:

Misfit - Amy Studt
La La - Ashlee Simpson
Tomorrow - Lillix
Who We Are - Hope Paltrow
Can't Behave - Courtney Jaye

I'm a big Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin and a lot more of those 70s groups, Guns & Roses, etc. But I've always liked the girly songs too. Not openly though, gotta keep that image.

I really love that "I Hope You Dance" song.

I'm a big Gwen Stefani fan. Madonna, Kylie Minogue, I like Jewel's "Intuition", "Androgyny" by Garbage, the Dixie Chicks, even Britney Spears, and many more.

Lola and Walk on the Wildside always had meaning to me.

SOAR- Christina Aguilera

My all-time fave girly song, these lyrics speak to me every time I hear that song

When they push, when they pull
Tell me can you hold on
When they say you should change
Can you lift your head high and stay strong

Will you give up, give in
When your heart's crying out "that is wrong"
Will you love you for you at the end of it all

Now in life there's gonna be times
When you're feeling low
And in your mind insecurities seem to take control
We start to look outside ourselves
For acceptance and approval
We keep forgetting that the one thing we should know is

Don't be scared
To fly alone
Find a path that is your own
Love will open every door

It's in your hands the world is yours
Don't hold back and always know
All the answers you will unfold
What are you waiting for
Spread your wings and soar

I am more in sync with the tastes of New Betty and Robin Leigh. I play music as my second "job", and prefer jazz. My short list:
Diana Krall
Jane Monheit
Cassandra Wilson
Ella Fitzgerald
Billie Holliday
Brand New Heavies
Aretha Franklin
Chaka Khan
Joni Mitchell (check out her "Mingus" CD)
Karin Allyson
Almost anything CLASSICAL. Opera in VERY SMALL doses!

My top 3 would have to Frank Zappa, Tower of Power, Miles Davis (pre "Bitches Brew"). Not very gurly at all.

When getting ready, i usually have fairly mellow to rock music playing. A few of my favorites are:

Nuevos Senoritas--------The Indigo Girls
In The Sun--------------Coldplay
I Had A Dream-----------ABBA
Dog And Butterfly--------Heart
Black Velvet-------------Melissa Etheridge
Let Her Cry--------------Hootie & The Blowfish

Not much country at all, even for a Texas girl (hehe), just good mood setting stuff.
