Hi Everyone,

I was wondering what books and movies might have a cross-dressing or transgendered theme or character. Some of the ones I have seen are:

The Bird Cage with Robin Williams (come to think of it Robin Williams was also in Mrs. Doubtfire where he crossdressed as a nanny. Hmmm. Makes you wonder, doesn't it?)

Just Like A Woman (an excellent movie that shows the life and trials of a crossdresser)

Tootsie of course.

I know about other ones but I haven't seen them. Has anyone seen Priscilla, Queen of the Desert or Ed Wood or To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar? What other movies or books do people know about? Both fiction and non-fiction? What ones are good and which ones are not so good? Inquiring minds want to know.

Not quite crossdressing but gender swap. Dr. Jeckyl and Mrs. Hyde and a movie called Switched.

I am into anime and there are a lot of crossdressing or gender changing related series. Ranma 1/2 (7 seasons and 2 movies), I My Me Strawberry Eggs, Revolutionary Girl Utena, and a lot more that I just cant think of right now.

Different For Girls: A movie about a post-op transsexual who meets up with a former friend from school. Not the best movie I have ever watched but not terrible either.

Sabryana,

I am also interested in anime and other artwork with a transgender theme. Do you know of any groups or sites which feature this kind of artwork? I know of one yahoo group that features this kind of artwork: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/One_of_the_girls_anime/

Thanks,

Cant say that I know any yahoo groups or sites directly dealing with transgender artwork but I would HIGHLY recommend the following forum to everyone here whether you like anime or not. It has a plethora of information on make-up techniques from real women, wigs, shoes, and everything else. There is a forum on crossplaying (crossdressing costume play) with additional tips for men and women chosing to play opposite gender.

Enjoy

i forgot about Charles Busch's movies Die Mommie Die and Psycho Beach Party. He plays the female lead in Die Mommie Die and a minor female part in Psycho Beach Party, both are pretty good.

One of the greatest crossdresser movies of all time is some like it hot 1959 with the late great Jack Lemmom and Tony Curtis In drag in the 1920's Flapper era also Marylin Monroe is in this one and the Great comediean Joe E Brown. Watch for the great classic ending on this one it's still a real scream even today!.

I finally got a chance to see this movie on TCM (actually not all of it but the last part). I had seen the first part other times and seen clips from it on various shows. But the ending to this is a real hoot. I imagine it caused a real stir when it was released back in the 50's. Anyone who hasn't seen it definitely ought to catch it.

What a classic for crossdressers young and old. Happy to see you know your movies. This one's 45y.o. and still funny to watch over again. It's a must see, the whole movie is hillarious.

Hi,

I agree with the others, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is a must-see. A link to try is http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109045/

I would really highly recommend this movie - it is very potent story and I was very moved by it. Artistically done and it works on several different levels.

A second movie is Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil A superior movie I thought. A link is http://goodandevil.warnerbros.com/ This movie was very main stream and has a transexual (transvestite?) as a main supporting character. Set in Savannah Georgia.

A book that I found incredibly hot was The Leather Daddy and the Femme by Carol Queen. Find it at http://www.blowfish.com or Amazon.com This is a great book to read in the bath, or when you are in bed but don't really want to sleep ;) .

If anyone else has seen these, or read the book, I would be interested in what you thought of them.

This is a better book than movie and that says a lot. The Lady Chablis is a real character and the story is based on fact. When the author was researching for his book the Lady Chablis (a T-Girl) said if the book was ever made into a movie she wanted to play her own part, and she did. That's the only movie that I'm aware she's ever been in but I couldn't imagine anyone but her playing her part.

The movie start Kevin Spacey and John Cusack and, of course, the Lady Chablis!

Just saw one of the most beautiful movies ive ever seen, Whale Rider. It somewhat deals with a transgender theme, in that the girl, pika, or something, was expected to be a boy. She was born to fulfill a prophesy and bring her people back into the light, But, her grandfather will not let her join the boys in the spirit quest, because, no girls aloud. The movie deals with male/female dynamics and has an overall message of acceptance. Could be boring for those not interested in spirituality. I think its the only movie to ever bring me tears thinking about it the next day. blair.

Thanks,

actually, i was talking about futanari (hermaphrodites) before, and how there are different types of futanari manga (comics) and anime (shows).

one of my favourite is Boy Soprano (scanned and translated by PaizuriTeam (http://paizuriteam.free.fr). it's about a boy whose parents were tragically killed ... and was brought up as a girl instead of a boy. the story starts when he was enrolled in the same private girl's school where his new "mother" and "sister" attends (as principal and student respectively). it's a naughty comic for people over 18 only ... and gets pretty graphical.

Another one of my favourites is Pretty Face (http://www.anime-source.com/banzai/modules.php?name=Content&pa=list_pages_categories&cid=21). This one is not as naughty. It's about this boy whose face was disfigured in a car accident, and was replaced with the face on the only picture he had on him at the time; the face of the girl he loved.

i had others listed as well in these two threads:

Family Safe Transgender Entertainment (http://www.crossdressers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=995&highlight=transgender+entertainment)

Transsexual Entertainment (http://www.crossdressers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=982&highlight=transgender+entertainment)

I was wondering what books and movies might have a cross-dressing or transgendered theme or character.

As for movies ... the only one i have seen recently was
Sorority Boys (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0279781/). i rented it expecting nothing ...

The premise of the movie is about three relatively "popular" guys who were framed by their fraternity and kicked out. They hatched this scheme to prove their innocence ... only to have it backfire and sent to a sorority house. Having no place to live, they remained dressed and stayed at said house. gratuitous nudity, "guy" humour ... i suppose it was good that i expected nothing, becuase that's more or less what i got.

the movie i saw before it was
100 Girls (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0214388/), which i saw, expecting nothing, but found it to be somewhat intelligent. The basis of the story is this guy who made love to a girl in an elevator in total darkness ... and he had fallen for her. with only the knowledge of the dormitory she lived in, he had to find her, no matter what. he started out as what seemed a typical guy, but as the movie progresses, he realizes more and more than women weren't just sexual objects, and that he had to love the girl of his dreams, and not love to make love to the girl (of his dreams).

one last one i want to mention: What Women Want (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0207201/) ... Mel Gibson, the ultimate man's man ... Lethal Weapon, Braveheart .... wearing pantyhose, super-sized bra, lipstick .... waxing his legs ... when his daughter and her boyfriend comes in.

As far as books go, I have to recomend :
"The Dress Circle" by Laury Graham. Its about a transvestite caught by his wife and the resuliting problems. Comedy but realistic and a good laugh.
"Breakfast On Pluto" by Patric McCabe. About a young transvestite in 70s Ireland. A bit more contempory but enjoyable all the same.
" Orlando" Clasic magical transition. Supper feminist. Have to say I love it though. it was my first transgender perchace in any book store.
" Middlesex" by Jeffery Eugenides is one of the better books. It core character is a Female to Male hermaphrodite. He goes back it time to trace the root of the rogue gene. Engrosing.
"Invisable Monsters" by Chuck Palahniuk. Bit of a weird one this. A gay man embarks on having a full sex change soley out of spite and self hatred. Its quite grim( but also colourful and funny at times).......................Loved reading these books...If anyone has read any of them or is going to . Let me know what you think of them........Love Chloe

"Some Like It Hot" is one of the best. In fact the wife was out yesterday, and picked up a copy, so we had movie night last night. That final scene is great. I just wish there was a scene that showed the boys dressing for the first time.

A really great book on transgender themes is "Trans-Sister Radio." I read it a year ago or so. It deals with a guy going through sex re-assignment and the woman he is in love with. It is a very sensitive and moving story. I would strongly recommend it to anyone with an interest in this area. :)

Two excellent films I've seen are
Boys don't Cry (starring hilary Swank I think) about a girl going through a sexual identity crisis. Very moving drama.

And
All the Queen's Men (starring Matt Le Blanc and Eddie Izzard, who really is a transvestite). This is a WWII comedy (?) about 4 soldiers who have to infiltrate a factory in Berlin staffed exclusively by women, in order to steal an Enigma machine for the British military. I love this movie!

One of the cd movies I like is Stonewall, it shows the hardship girls in the seventies had coming out. Another movie I think was called Boys from Brazil, about a transvesti from Brazil who goes to Italy and works as a prostitute. There are a couple of comic books I read with cd characters. One character is Danny the Street he's a transvestite street in the comic Doom Patrol. He first appeared in DC comics Doom Patrol #35 vol-2, Its really a well written story by Grant Morrison. The other comic is the Invisibles by DC comics which has a character named Lord Fanny. She's a gay tranvestite witch from South America, she gets her power by fooling a witch doctor into believing she's a gg. There are more CD comic book characters on this site www.gayleague.com

It's definitely not for everyone, but there's a lot of anime with CD themes. "I, My, Me, Strawberry Eggs" is about a man who must CD to teach at a Jr high staffed only by women-VERY funny (my avatar is his femme persona). There's also one called "El Hazard" about a teenager who gets sucked into an alternate world and must impersonate a princess for part of the show. BTW, I have no idea where they come up with the names for some of these :p

A trio of comedies on the subject that I have really enjoyed are Just One of the Guys (1985) starring Joyce Hyser, Switch (1991) starring Ellen Barkin, and her performance is an absolute hoot, and Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde (1995) with Sean Young and Tim Daly. Good special effects and some great laughs. Now that I'm on hormone therapy I can relate to Tim Daly's character making a "science project" of himself. A little scary but fascinating too.

xoxoxo,

Christine

I'm always learning something new, those anime sites are a blast.

For devotees of transgendered fiction, the top four sites are:

Sapphire's Place (http://www.sapphireplace.com)

Fictionmania (http://www.fictionmania.com)

Storysite (http://www.storysite.org)

Big Closet (http://bigcloset.ateros.com/newstuff/)

All of these sites offer an amazing array of stories about guys dressing up as girls, turning into girls, etc. My favorite featured author is Nom de Plume (http://snurl.com/tgblog)
