Great story, takes a strong personality to pull that off in high school. One paragraph for me stood out in the article...... "She taught me to be strong and never be ashamed of myself," Vera said. "Never see yourself as less, she said. She told me, 'You know, to really be a lady you have to know how to walk into a room.' "

The story uses "he" for Vera all the way through, even though the article says Vera prefers "she." But then she does say not to worry about the small things.

It was good to see Vara's peers got behind her and supported such a brave move:happy:

I don't know if he realizes it, but he struck a blow for all of us. Sadly, the same thing couldn't happen here (Wisconsin). Too much small-mindedness here. Kids like him whlo have gone public have been slapped down hard by the system.

Every bit of positive media exposure helps us all. First in the more accepting places then slowly through to even the most repressive.

I remember in my freshmen year of HS that the homecoming king tried to wear a dress to homecoming and the administration made him change. Most students were behind him (I don't think he was seeking a female pronoun here, but I'm not sure). I never had the confidence to try anything like that.

Great story! I'm so proud of Johnny, she is a real inspiration. Her classmates at Fresno also deserve a lot of credit.

That is a great story....glad to hear people are tolerant enough to see that happen. That would have been wholely impossible back in my high school days....I didn't grow til college, oh to be 5'6" 120lbs again...ooooh the prom dresses I would have tried.

Good for you Johnny
