Here is an article in Scientific American's website ab out how sexual development is more complicated than previously thought. It's not just hormones but alot of other genes besides the X and Y chromosomes.
It could explain how the brain can be partly male or female regardless of the actual external sex of the individual.

The article is not that technical.
