View Full Version : Driving in high heels: easy or scary?

I like to drive in heels and have usually found it to be straightforward, but I might keep a flat pair of shoes in the car to swap in to for longer journeys.

In the early days before I had really got used to heels on the pedals (3 of them in the UK!!) I sometimes had to kick them off and drive without any shoes at all in stockinged feet.

What do you do...??

Although high heels, (and 3" heels are my limit) I find that a lower heels works better.

I can comfortably drive in shoes with a 1 1/2 - 2" heels or so.

I don't wear flat shoes to drive in. If I'm the one who's driving (usually my wife drives) I drive in whatever I'm wearing for my outfit. However, I can't safely drive in anything higher than 4 inches becuase it hurts my ankle after a while. If there's a time when we're going out to a club or bar or whatever and I want to wear my five inch heels to "sex it up" a little then my wife Marla always drives.

I can drive in 4" heels easily. It is so much fun to change into heels after work and drive home feeling like Karyn. I like to wear a woman's jacket when I drive in heels, too.

I never could drive in heels, always kicked them off and put them back on when I got to my destination on the rare occasions that I wore them, but I usually wear low heels or flats anyway, as I'm so *!#@ tall.

Funny, when I was young and wore heels, (the higher the better) with everything, I had no problem driving with heels. Now that I am older and dealing with the distraction of driving with 5 kids in the van, I aim for comfort above all. Flip flops or bare feet!

From experience, start low and then go high. Heels that is. I almost wrecked my truck in 4 inch heels...Start with flats, then got to heels.

with a platform and no problems. But you must pay attention to what you are doing and remember if they are comfortable, they are still high heels so don't forget that.:D

For short trips the heels don't particularly bother me, but I have a tendency to kick my shoes off in the car no matter what sort of footwear I'm wearing. Stockinged feet are the most comfortable for me.

I've noticed two things about wear 4" plus heels while driving though, on longer trips my ankle starts to hurt from the relatively odd angle that I have to hold my foot and, I also tend to pick up scuffs on the heels if I drive in tall shoes.

I can drive in heels up to 6", its the highest heeled shoe I own but I can drive in them perfectly fine. I actually feel more comfortable driving in the higher heels then I do in lower heels, flats, or even plain guy shoes.

I don't have any problem driving in heels, but I can't seem to drive in those flip-flops that everybody loves. The darn things keep slipping off my feet.

Don't know how it is in the rest of the world but here (in Switzerland) you can get into big trouble when you build an accident driving in heels. Insurance companies are know to have cut on their payments. They argue (understandably) that your feet are not as secure on the floor in high heels as in "normal" shoes and that because of that you can't use your brake as you should. So take care when you want to spend your holidays here ;o)

The first time I drove wearing heels it was a rather interesting experience. Felt really different for about the first 1/2 hour, but surprisingly I got accustomed to it quite quickly. Since then (almost 2 years ago now) I had many occassion to be "driving in heels". Have worn my 4" ers many times.
Just two weeks ago I went out for the day with my GG sister and another "lady" for a day of shopping. That day I wore just my 2" heeled shoes. (sensible shoes for shopping all day) I got elected to drive my sisters car. A Saturn Vue with "standard" shift. Hadn't driven a clutch in many years, but just like riding a bicycle, you never forget. Loads of fun

It's an acquired skill. Just takes practice and patience that's all. Your feet have to "learn" how to accommodate heels while driving.

It takes some getting used to but I drive in heels a lot since I like to wear them as often as I can and nobody can see your feet while driving. It's the same thing with learning to walk in heels, it all takes practice so come on girls let's all get out there and practice, practice and practice!!

Since most of the heels I own or wear are more "sensible" (2 - 3 inch) I don't have any problem driving in them at all. Though it did take some getting used to when I was driving a manual transmission vehicle.

I tried driving in everything from 1/2" to 4" heels and wedges and found that once I got used to the different positioning of my foot on the pedals, it was easy for me to drive.

I almost always wear 3" heels when I go out and have never had a problem driving with them. Ocassionally I'll wear 4" heels but nothing higher. Too hard on the feet when I'm shopping.

no problem for me up to 3", but i do have a pair of 6" platforms, that was tough, but almost more difficult was the getting my big feet with the big heels in and near the peddles, but after getting in, was OK but jerky in applying gas/brake for a little while

I only have one pair of 1,5' heels and driven once with them on, but it felt suprisingly easy (using stick gears). The hardest part was that I drove about 400 km (250 miles) in heavy snow blizzard.

I can't believe you guys did away with the 4th pedal! Where's the world going...

Anytime you want I'll be happy to give you lessons in how to drive an "automatic". They've been around since the 1950s. Oh well, some folks just don't like those new-fangled inventions.

I can give lessons on how to drive a manual transmission without using the clutch.

Speaking of stick shifts... I have a Ford Ranger, and find that driving in my 5" pumps to be easier than my work boots, simply because they have a narrower sole, which gives a lot more space between the brake and clutch. I do drive my F-350 with plats etc., because it is an automatic. Seat is electric, so I can position it so it is comfortable for whatever angle my legs are at. Great for long high heeled trips:happy:

I drive a Ford Escort wagon with a manual transmision. I've had no difficulty wearing 3 or 4-inch heels while driving. I do agree about scuffing the heels while driving. In my Expedition, the only difficulty is with the running boards climbing in.

The thing I WON'T do is wear high-heeled boots riding my motorcycle. There's way too much danger of ankle injuries supporting a 700 lb. two- wheeler with one's feet not firmly on the pavement.

I love wearing my 5" heels to drive around in. I think it makes it more fun and I always wear them the whole time that I drive. The best part is when you pull up somewhere and then take that first step out of the car and your heels are already on and you can just get out and go.

Driving for me is almost like a mini step before actually going out in public... People in large cars/trucks can see in yet you can always speed out of their sight if you feel uncomfortable. I have driven in the red platforms before, it was well different...

On a return home, Imma got fully dressed in motel room and left in car wearing laced five inch high heeled knee boots for six hour drive home.:D

It was years ago. Imma had CB on and got lots of responses from truckers and other drivers, but just did not response to any!:heehee:

Imma used wet rawhide laces on boots. For those that do not know, rawhide laces will shrink upon drying. As result, boots got tighter!

This resulting in my feet being kept in a high arch for six hours!

Drove to miniwarehouse and changed back into drab clothes!:thumbsdn:

Maybe I can talk my wife in letting me go all day in boots this Halloween!

To those of you who take your shoes off to drive, You need to be especially careful that your socks or stocking feet don't slide off the pedals. That could be just as dangerous as wearing the heels.

I was surpised how easy it is wearing boots with 4" heels. I expected to lose some control. But I loved it. And over here in 'primitive' Europe, manual gears are the norm.

On my perfect storm week mentioned in earlier posts, I went out a couple of the nights for a drive. One night wearing a pair of black boots with 3 inch heels, and the other night wearing a pair of brown boots with a 3.5 inch heel. I drove my wife's car, it is sexier than my stationwagon and has cute tinted windows! I love the strange feel of the heels working the clutch and gas. I sort of got used to it after a while, but thrilling to the max.

drive in 3.5" heels. Those are the highest I own and I ojnly bought them because I loved the style of them. However, If I was going to be drive say for several hours, I would have a pair of flats to wear to east the strain on my feet and ankles.

Be careful no matter what you wear or don't wear while driving. Any accident can be bad.

Is that why women are such bad drivers

Now before anyone starts flaming/bashing (:bonk:) me my comment is intended for the purpose of humor only! It is NOT my personal opinion that women are bad drivers. I've seen more men shaving or changing their shirts while driving than I have seen women applying makeup (etc.)

Let's all have a good laugh! :roflmao:

I work in a body shop. One time we fixed a car that a GG was driving, she had her left heel caught on her floor mat and her right heel caught under her gas pealed (somehow), she couldn’t hit the brakes in time. Be careful, most important be comfortable when you drive.

Hi girls

Thank you, I've enjoyed reading the messages generated! I have now bought a pair of ballet-style flats (mainly to wear with footless tights) and tend to leave them in the car. Not only are they very comfortable but make driving a hell of a lot easier...next problem: switching from heels to flats and back again with asteering wheel in the way; I, too, like to get out of the car with my heels on already.

I also agree with the comments about hitching your skirt up and getting noticed by boys in big trucks!!

Thanks again
Love Becky

I wear heels pretty much daily and they are no less then 4 inchers. Most of the time they are 5 inches I think? Anyway I drive everywhere in my heels and it's just like everything else. You get use to it....When I do have to go back to wearing some tennis shoes it actually hurts and feels wierd walking in them. I guess if I pushed it a little more I could become permanently heeled? Just stick with it and practice and you will see driving in your heels is not that big of deal :)

Don't think I have seen this mentioned, but someone had to. Might as well be me about Weird Al's Truck Drivin' Song. This has gotta be somebody's theme song here.

http://www.themadmusicarchive.com/song_details.aspx?SongID=828

to listen to it.

Here are the lyrics. ===>

I'm drivin' a truck
Drivin' a big ol' truck
Pedal to the metal, hope I don't run out of luck
Rollin' down the highway until the break of dawn
Drivin' a truck with my high heels on

My diesel rig is northward bound
It's time to put that hammer down
Just watchin' as the miles go flyin' by
I'm ridin' twenty tons of steel
But it's sure hard to hold the wheel
While I'm waiting for my nails to dry

Oh, I always gotta check my lipstick in that rear view mirror
And my pink angora sweater fits so tight
I'm jammin' gears and haulin' freight
Well, I sure hope my seams are straight
Lord, don't let my mascara run tonight

Because I'm drivin' a truck
Drivin' a big ol' truck
Smokey's on my tail and my accelerator's stuck
Got these eighteen wheels-a-rollin' until the break of dawn
Drivin' a truck with my high heels on

Oh, I don't mind when my crotchless panties creep right up on me
And my nipple rings don't bother me too much
But when I hit those big speed bumps
My darling little rhinestone pumps
Keep slippin' off the mother-lovin' clutch

But still I'm drivin' a truck
Drivin' a big ol' truck
Headin' down the interstate, just tryin' to make a buck
Wearin' feather boas with sequins and chiffon
While I'm drivin' a truck with my high heels on

I'm drivin' a truck (drivin' a truck)
Drivin' a truck (drivin' a truck)
Got a load to carry and some eyebrows left to pluck (ooh)
And I'm late for my appointment down at my hair salon (ooh, aww)
So I'll be drivin' a truck with my high heels on (drivin a truck)
(My high heels on)
