Just wanted to share that Mom has finally started to notice my hairiness, and has begun commenting about it. For those that don't know the circumstances: my mom is old (80), doesn't see well, doesn't hear well, is not always lucid, knows nothing about my transitioning and I don't think it's worth telling her 'cause she won't understand it and it will probably confuse her more. She's still in a nursing home (though we still don't know if that will be temporary or permanent) and I visit her as often as I can, which is several times a week - especially since her family has stopped coming by or calling (now that they figured out she's gonna live ).

Anyway, I had decided to take my son's advice and stop shaving when I go see her, figuring she probably won't notice much anyway, and if she does, she'll just blame it on my dad's (hairy) side of the family. So the other day I went to see her and she said, "hey, you got a hell of a mustache there". Took me completely by surprise, so I just laughed and said, "yeah, I know". Of course it is a "hell of a mustache" for a girl, but not much for a boy. Glad she didn't ask me to shave it off. :p

At the following visit I wore shorts ('cause it's hotter than blazes here now) and she commented about my hairy legs and asked me why I haven't shaved. All I said was that I couldn't be bothered. She also looked surprised that I cut my nails very short (though I've been doing that for over a year now). Now I wonder if she's wondering just how masculine I intend to go. Meanwhile, she's confusing the nurses 'cause she keeps introducing me to them as her daughter. They give me funny looks and I just shrug as if to say, "she's not all there".

LOL! Hey, you're passing to the nurses! That's excellent! Nurses are biologically-oriented too, so they're tough ones to pass with. :D

I know what it means to have a parent or loved one in this situation. It is not easy. I am sure that every second is precious and worth remembering.

Ever thought about taking up a tot or rum? :D

:hugs:

Aw Lex, that's difficult. :hugs: But good for you for taking the time, while still finding a balance that works for both of you.

Thanks, Zen, Michelle and Lily . . . it's a matter of choosing which is worse: letting my mother see me hairy and maybe question it, or getting called "ma'am" ten times a day (which is what happens when I shave it all off). My son knows I was miserable having to correct people all day, so he suggested just letting the hair grow and only having to deal with Mom's comments, if any. So far, so good . . . I'll just have to dismiss it when she finally gets around to telling me to go shave. It's weird, though, in a way it gives me comfort that she sees it and still treats me the same way anyway (apart from a few comments).

Send the ten "ma'am's" a day my way, can never get enough.

And great to see that you are making time for Mom......I do wonder if any of mine will come to see me if I end up in that situation. You only have parents once.

Cap, you're a wonder son to your Mom. A few comments aside, my Mom always had something to say to me, your Mom is probably glad to see you regardless! I wouldn't sweat it my man!

Don't feel bad Lex. My Mom and Grandma were always telling me to go shave when I had a day's growth and just wanted to "bum"it for the day. I swear those ladies had stock in the razor companies.
