View Full Version : Sticking crap in my eye

I have a really ahrd time putting make up on my eyes. Particularly eye liner... it's my favorite - I love the look... but my eyelids shake and it ends up looking awful! And I notice that a lot of GGs I see do the eyeliner so close to the eye that you can't see the skin color where the eyelashes come out - do you know what I mean? When I put eyeliner on there's a space... I don't believe I'm gonna do this but I'm attaching a picture of a bad eyeliner job to illustrate.

HOW! How do you stick a pencil in your friggin' eye and not have your eye react? This is the first time I've really delved into the make up thing - I'm getting better at eye shadow - it's a color thing and I'm good with color... but I can't get a good line on my eye with this eyeliner. I bought a "self sharpening" pencil - like 10 bucks... it works much better than a cheap pencil but it still goes on soooo hard - especially on top of eyeshadow - the pencil never comes off on the eye shadow :(

HEEEELP!! You beautiful ladies, help me!

Okay Steph, the number one secret is practice, practice, practice!
Put the color on your lids first, then apply the liner. I've found the best way to apply liner is to rest my little finger on my cheek to steady my hand and then dab spots above my lashes then connect the dots. I also prefer liquid liner, but pencil works fine also.

My hat is off to you, while I believe I've mastered the eyeline pencil I can not get the liquid liner to work. I always make a huge mess and have to clean up and start all over. LOL Wilma

Liquid is next on my list... did your eyes shake when you first started with make up? They're uncontrollable!!

Sweetie, the number one thing I have personally discovered is that you must invest some real dollars in eye liner in order for you to get it to go on smoothly. Estee Lauder has some good liner and Elizabeth Arden does as well. I would recommend my own brand but I am out of stock.

Sharon was right when she said to put the shadow on first. In fact, get most of your face done before you go to the liner and the mascara. The purpose of eyeliner is to enhance the look of your eyelashes and actually make them appear thicker at the base. I have found that the easiest way is to use a very good pencil, (one that is easy glide on - or liquid) - and hold your eye taught with your left hand. Now take your right hand and start from the outmost side and work your way inward. When you are first applying it - you can almost be on top of your lashes - it won't hurt the look any, start thin and then go over it a couple of times if you have to. The key is to stick close to your lashes. If you find that you have a space dear don't freak out. Just take the pencil in your right hand and pull your eye taught again with your left and fill in the white spots with the easy on pencil. (Another great way to fill in that space is with false eyelashes, but that is another story.)

The ladies are right! Practice practice practice! Don't put the pencil in your eye! I have seen many a girl here put pencil in the eye and I know that some prefer that look - but it actually makes your eyes look smaller. The purpose again is to enhance your eyelashes making them look thicker and therefore open up your eyes. I hope I've helped just a little love.

Take Care,
Theresa

Stephanie

Like the other ladies said “practice, practice and practice some more. One hint I got from a GG was to pull the eye skin over to the outside to help hold the eyelid study. The other hint is to use short little strokes inside of one long line.

start with a good eyeliner pencil 10.00 these kind you dont have to sharpen. i put mine on the top corner of the eye tward the nose about where your lashes stop. follow that by pulling down your bottom eye lid i color the ledgeall the way to the backof the eye then at each corner i use the pencil under the lash and follow it to the end of the browe just a straight line . eye shadow is easy dark on your lid lighter color above start abour 3/4 of the way from your nose and follow that back to your brow as well some times i take a third color and smuge from the end of the eye lid to the brow as well i found by inhansing your eyes they will focus on them while talking to you and not look at your facal features hope this helps you xxx

Wilma, you answered right. Practice makes perfect.
Eyebrow pencils can be just as hard. If your hand shakes to much you end up looking like Mr. SPOCK !!!

Problem is ... as I have found... the older your get the more you have to pull the skin across to get a straight line. However you don't really want a line unless youa are a Goth or Egyptian Princess, some shading and tone looks better with eyeshadow then some eyeliner OR False eyelashes, then you don't have to do upper eyeliner :p

Liquid eyeliner was invented by the devil!

I hae long since decided that before I die, I want to meet the person who invented it, in a dark alleyway...

I love eyeliner. The only problem I have with eyeliner is that it is sold in those little bottles, I would buy it in gallon cans if they sold it that way.

I find that the cheap maybellene eyeliner to work just fine, I have had no problems with cheap eyeliner.

When I put eyeliner on the eye lid, where the eyelashes meet the lid. I put the eyeliner on before the eye-shadow. I let the eyeliner dry, then I put on a white eyeshadow, touching the eyeline line. This seems to blend the line, making it look smoky and not too harsh. Then I put a dark eye-shadow around the rim of the eye-socket and extended outwards a little. This gives my eyes an blinking type effect. When the eye is open, the white can not be seen, but when I close my eyes(blink), then the white sort of flashes like a light. This makes a very nice effect.

Also, you don't have to use eyeliner, you can also use eyeshadow to get a similar effect to the eyeliner, it might not be as bold, but it can look attractive. Use a small brush, sort of like is used in painting those plastic models you had when you were a kid.

Try lots of different methods, experiment, there is no wrong way, and there is no wrong order to putting on make-up, I even knew GGs who put their foundation on after they did their eye make-up and it looked just fine.
Go out and buy the cheap Rite Aid stuff and practice with it.
You'll learn soon enough.

Amelie... how long did it take you to master the art of putting eyeliner on? In your avatar, it looks absolutely fantastic :)

I have to admit... although I'm a Beauty Therapist.... I find it hard putting it on myself... I use the dark eyeshadow method for myself using the brush that is angled (I think Donna T put up a pic of one in another thread).

Thanks Tamara
The punk GGs wouldn't let me hang out with them unless I learned to do my eyes. Also some of them taught me how to do the eyes. My opinion, the punk GGs did the best eye make-up. They were always EXPERIMENTING with different ideas and tools(make-up).
