I remember reading somewhere some time ago, that the Japanese have a very liberal and accepting attitude to crossdressing/TV/TGs. ...

.....and just last night I watched a film called " Just Like A Woman " where once more it was mentioned in the film that the Japanese are very open to crossdressers.

Has anyone else heard of this?... or have had any experience as such. I myself work for a Japanese company, with several nationals in our head office, but somehow the subjeat has never come up !

The Japanese have a strange strict/liberal mix in society.
They can be very rigid and unbending in certain areas and yet very open and accepting at the same time.
There's a penis festival, and you can buy porn (and I've heard used ladies knickers:o) from vending machines on street corners.

In Japan crossdressers and their ilk are known as newhalf and there are many tv shows that show them-check on youtube for a range of vids available. And boy do those slight, smooth skinned men make fabulous ladies:D

That's a pretty racist comment there bud ... judging them based on a war time scenario - I'm sure you still by products made in Japan.

I can't help but shake my head with the racism of that comment

Let him, or her, who is ,or whose country is, without sin cast the first stone...

Honestly the whole history of the world is riddled with one nation either overtly, or covertly, attacking another that holding grudges is a waste of time and energy.

Do something positive so that the mistakes of the past are not repeated.

From what I have seen I would agree. Annime, cosplay, game shows, movies, etc..... Crossdressing seems to be pretty open in Japan. But from a distance I'm sure you could find many American examples of crossdressing and think it's more prevalent then it is.

I wonder how the general population views it. I mean over here Ryan Seacrest is everywhere you look, but that don't mean for a second we like it

anyway....

There even are some festivals and cerimonies where BOYS are dressed as girls/ young women.----I dont remember the names or places though.

And not let us forget KABUKI, a form of Japanese Classic theatre where men take women'a roles.

CD is certianly part of the Japaniese culture in some forms, but still may be looked upon with a Jaunticed eye out of the acccepted contexts ---although not as harshly as in western culture.

The issue is the context in which the "crossdressing" takes place ... it's hardly the modern concept of crossdressing when a man wears women's clothing as part of acting theatrically and so on.

Crossdressing needs to be defined in the context of sexual/nonsexual fetish and gender dysphoria

Joy, the Japanese have been our allies for like 50 years now. And besides, judging the entire race? That's racism. Chill.

In the japanese music style J-Rock there are many musicians who crossdress, also in anime there are feminine men, or boys. Apparently something the Japanese girls love!

She didn't say she hated them. She distrusts them. Do you get scared if four young black guys pass you on a dark street? Does it make you racist? No! I don't trust the Chinese. That makes me prejudiced against communists! Which is okay in my book. But, I like Chinese people in this country. Instead of attacking her, you coulda asked why she feels that way.

In Japan they have a reality CD show. Men apply and if accepted try to make themselve as fem as possible, then they have a panel of judges made up from the audience that interview and view the contestant. The judges have no idea the person is a CD. They think it is part of a pagent. She is then graded on looks, presentation, walk, mannerisms, and voice. If she get high enough marks, she advances to the next round, until there is only one winner. I saw a couple of Utube videos of the show. It was funny to watch the reactions of the judges when they were finished and found out the person was a CD.

Hi JoAnn,

Yes, that looked like a cool show, here's a link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-0jUzE9fqA&mode=related&search=) to the show with the "girl" who won. But I was under the impression that everyone knew what was going on.

Everyone except the judges that is. If you look carefully at the video, you will see how shocked the judges are that the person in the chair is really a male. LOL

Okay, I'm pretty rusty with my Japanese (born and raised in US), but mostly the guys were saying "She's a guy? she's a guy? She's cute.." Couldn't get the rest, but that's what they kept repeating. Obviously the one guy just couldn't resist and didn't care...

While in Japan a few months ago, I bought my daughter a stuffed seal, named Sirotan. The store also had childrens about the adventures of the seal. I don't read Japanese, but looking at the pictures the seal kept crossdressing as other animals such as a lion, whale, giraffe, etc. I would love to know the real story, but maybe they start training their crossdressers early.

Japanese TV never ceases to entertain me, I just wish that I spoke Japanese. I am very intrigued by this show where they dress the guys up, they do an incredible with those makeovers. It must be nice to have a naturally small physique, color me jealous.

The first place I saw a transgendered person was Singapore back in the mid '70s. Like Japan, they are strict in some areas but apparently being TGered is not taboo there either.

I saw a show just recently, I think it was "Taboo", that in some 4th and 5th world nations, they actually pick one of the male children to live as a CD (I forget what they called the "third gender." Very interesting though.
