My first day of classes for my junior year was today. I have a pretty heavy schedule, I'm in class straight through on Mondays from 9-4 with an hour for lunch. I went to classes in full-on guy mode - I was feeling the need to pack today, so I went with it, plus my binder, a pair of khakis, and my plaid button-down shirt. Oh, and some brown men's shoes (the ones I was wearing in NYC).
One classmate came up from behind me while I was waiting to get into my 1 oclock class, and goes "I didn't recognize you! You look like a boy from the back!" I shrugged it off and mumbled something about it probably being the pants, with her going "Yeah, just the pants...and the shoes...and the shirt." Class started, so she dropped it, but cornered me at break and asked "So what's with the boy outfit?" I told her she was officially the first person at school to know that I'm transsexual (because I'm chicken and haven't told my roommate yet). She was way cool about it, although I think it hasn't sunk in yet. She kept laughing about the fact that I'd been wearing this outfit all day and she was the first one to ask about it. She said the shoes really caught her attention, that she was confused coming down the hallway because she really thought there were no men in that class. I was thrilled - I was pretty much resigned to not passing ever on campus because it's a women's college with lots of butch lesbians around.
My plan this semester is to be sort of "passively out." I'm going to dress the way I want, act the way I want, and let people draw their own assumptions, but if asked directly like I was today, I'll tell them.
