There was a very biases article about male clothing on the front page of yahoo today. Several statements as i can recall from the article follow:
1. In casual environments women should wear short sleeves.
2. Men should never ever wear short sleeves. The reason given that men have hairy arms!
3. In casual environments women should wear shorts.
4. Males should never wear shorts because of hairy legs.
5. Women should wear open necks.
6. Men should only wear open necks if they wear a tee-shirt under their shirt to hide the chest hair.
7. Women should wear sandals in casual work environments.
8. Men must never wear sandals even in casual work environments because they will not be taken seriously.
Why didn't they just say men should remove the darn hair from their arms and legs if they want to wear short sleeve shirts or short pants!
Also, why didn't they just say that men should get pedicures if they want to wear sandals to work.
It's the old double standard that is being perpetuated again. It really makes me angry!! :Angry3:

You forgot the other double standard. Men are not allowed to shave their arms or legs because it doesn't look right. I was told this the other day by a female co-worker who noticed my arms were shaved. Jocelyn

Hey... Wear what you want!!! I wear a business suit to work every day and my boss dresses casual most of the time!! I like the way I dress.... Don't think I'd wear shorts or a skirt even if it were proper... just me!!!

I hope you told that woman where to go because it is none of her business! Also you should have pointed out any male clothing that she wears.

Yea, I thought about that, however even though she is a co-worker, she is a co-worker with powerful connections.

Yes, but sometimes you just need to stand up and be a big girl! The comment that she made to you was uncalled-for! It is equivalent to you telling a women that you noticed her hairy legs and that she should shave her legs.
What do you think would have happened? You would have been in the VP of Human Resources office faster than you could blink an eye. Do you see that I mean? You really shouldn't take harassment from anyone.

Yes, correct on not taking harrassment. Her comment was more made in the tone of just casual office/humor conversation as opposed to actively harassing me. I responded in an equally humorous manner, and we went on to another topic. I actually gave myself credit for admitting to shaving everything.

It is really good that you were honest about shaving everything. Unfortunately many CDs would deny it. Kudos to you.

I really don't know why we get worked up about admiting we shave our body. My ex wife wanted me to shave certain parts of my body, she really doesn't like chest hair on a guy, amoung other things. I see no reason why we have to like being hairy, and we can do something about that if we choose to. If anybody asks me about my shaved legs, I just tell them I don't like hairy legs. If they don't like it, oh well!

that is so silly it's not even worth the time it takes to be upset about it. Total waste of energy. I find it funny. Me thinks the writer has an issue w/men's body hair. As long as it isn't back hair, it's all good w/me. :heehee:

I know all about the double standards. I used to work in a Nursing Home run by Nuns. All of the Nursing Staff wore scrubs, and during the hot Summer months were permitted knee length shorts. I on Maintenance Staff could not wear shorts, and had to wear a Tee Shirt under my long sleeve Mr. Goodwrench uniform. And get this, I have no hair on my legs, and it's that way naturally. I'm always accused of shaving my legs, noone expects this, but I notice I'm really not alone. I see plenty of men in shorts with no hair. DeeDee3

It sounds like nothing more than a parody.
If it's real, don't take it seriously.

Yea, to the initial post, I think its garbage. That isn't even about wearing clothes for men, that is not even close to male-female equality. I wear short sleeves all the time. I hate long sleeves. In the summer, if I can I usually wear shorts. At my current job no one is allowed to though, so at least it isn't a double standard.
Although I did see 2 people wearing capris yesterday, and 1 guy wearing shorts anyway.

At my place of employment they have circulated the dress code a few times and usually people do not payattention to it. I tried to wear sandles one day and was in trouble within the first hour, my manager (GG) also tried talking to me about it, unfortunatly for her i pointed out that she was wearing dressy flip flops and asked how that was different... she just stormed off. But it still bugs me that the other females still wear capris and sandles, even skirts. One place I worked I was the only male, and the female wore skimpy sundresses thus wanted to keep the AC higher in the summer but the boss felt I should wear pants (fought that one too).

Hello everyone.
I have heard also all those things. To be honest, while i became crossdresser then i also like beauty what womens have.
So i don't care is it woman or man, but if people don't care themselves then it's awful...

The body hair thing is so stupid. I shave my legs and chest. I work with a bunch of women, and they notice, and even ask. I am upfront with them and tell them that body hair is so gross (I wear shorts to work so hairless legs is very noticeable). They then ask if that is all is shave, and I reply with as I said, body hair is so gross. Then they usually say that they wish their husband/boyfriends would shave. Even a couple of my fiancées friends have asked if I could per sway their men to shave every now and then. Now, if most of them only knew!

Some of the articles that perpetuate the stereotypical attitude that prevails in the North America are ones written to instruct immigrants on how to dress/act in the N.A. business environment. Some articles go as far as dealing with hygiene. The author cannot come right out and say this is whom the article is intended for because then he/she would be chastised for being “racist”, so it is assumed to apply to everyone.
Example: Most people don’t know this but there is a certain nationality of women who stand on the toilet seat and urinate into the toilet, but they also pee all over the seat and the floor and just leave it there. (That pisses me off…either sit, hover with feet on the floor or clean up the friggin’ mess. Imagine going into a one-stall washroom and having to deal with urine all over the toilet seat. I have sons and not once did they ever pee all over the seat.) I worked for a company that posted instructions on the back of the stall door (for all women) on how to use the toilet.
Also, a Canadian student, taking an Executive Assistants course, showed me some of the “etiquette” in one of her textbooks because she didn’t understand why they would write such things. A lot of it is similar to the OP. Most of it sounds like something from the 50’s.
