Hi everyone. I only joined recently but, gosh, there is so much interesting stuff to read here! So, after looking a for wig threads, learning lots, but not answering my own question, I thought I'd pose it here.

I have but one wig and limited funds. I am getting more into CD'ing than ever before in my life and the temptation to spend, Spend, SPEND must be checked , 'lest I beautify myself into the poorhouse.

So, in the name of scrimping here and saving there I want to know if I can modify/restyle my synthetic hair wig that I bought a year ago with no research on a total lark. From what I now know (partly through reading here at this great site), my wig is ALL WRONG for a crossdresser who wants to look femenine.

It is a chin-length (maybe a little longer) but only because the ends have this really adorable flip that looked so cute on that impossbily slender manequin head. Unfortunately, this style exposes my strong, angular jawline. I was wondering if there is a way to curl the hair in, and forward, to get a more face-framing style.

Thanks to my reading, I know NOT to try anything hot (like a curling iron). However, as the wig is either fixable or a total loss, I'm willing to experiment a bit with it.

If it will help, I can post some pictures of it here tonight.

Thanks, hugs
Meghan

Hi meghan - I don't think you can do much with a synthetic wig. My makeover lady has tried a bit with some of my synthetics, she told me that the style really can't be changed, they are made with the style they have. And you are right, you cannot put heat on those types of wigs, or they melt.

..of course, someone else may have a different take on this...

The only thing I was able to do with a syn-wig was to give it a hair cut. I had a long straight(not gay) wig that I didn't like, so instead of throwing it away, I cut it shorter. It came out OK, then again I can wear some strange looking wigs. There have been other wigs I had that I trimed some of the hair. If the bangs were to long, I would shorten them. Now, mind you, all my wigs are of the straight variety, they had no waves or curls. Having a straight hair wig might be easier to cut than a styled wig.
So, the only styling I do on my wigs is to cut them.

Although, there is this wig shop near where I live, and this guy was in the back styling the wigs. He was making one of a kind creations from plain wigs. I haven't seen this guy in the store for awhile. I should have asked him how he did it. He made some outlandish designs.

Also, I saw a part in the movie "Wigstock" where they were designing wigs. It seems like someone knows how it's done, just not me.

A "flip" is really nothing more than a "bob" combed out the other way. You might want to try turning the wig upside down on your head form and brushing vigorously, then putting it on the form right ways and brushing from underneath and turning the curl IN, rather than flipping it out.

I have done the same thing with a few of my wig collection and it works.

Dearest Megan, I've been wearing synthetic wigs for 25 years and if the fiber is a
good quality it can most surely be set(rolled in rollers} and dryed under a hair dryer
with medium heat. Theres got to be a wig stylists in your area that knows how to do
this. A curling iron will only burn or melt the synthetic fiber, but if it is set with a good
wet setting lotion and dryed under a dryer, or let it air dry rolled up, you can pickthe curls out with a pick or comb them out with a vent brush and achieve a whole new look. I do this all the time. I have even worn my wig to the beauty salon and had my
hairdreser set it for me, dry it and comb it out and Im wearing it on my head the entre
time. I have no hair of my own, so I have no choice. I use two way hairpiece tape to
hold it in place. It is extremely secure. I even had one of my long (16") snthetic wigs
set in rollers, dryed, and styled into a fabulous Up-Do. A beautiful french twist and lots
of sprial curls on the top, I love getting my hair done, you should try it, it's fun and
you will be surprised how good you can look. Good luck with it honey.

.... I had a long straight(not gay) wig that I didn't like, .....

 Love it, just love it! :roflmao:

Beware of trimming, it can have unexpected results. The bangs on one of my wigs were too long, so I trimmed them a bit. Now they stick out in front like the peak of a baseball cap, I have to stick them down whever I wear that one.
