So far I have gone out unscathed by the fashion police.
But I know I need some help here. I see there are some dressing services within a few hours drive. But that's not what I'm looking for. I'd dearly like to find someone who could advise me on what to ware. How buy. What goes with what.

So if there are any GG's or TG's or TS's out there, that would like to get into a much needed service, contact me. Because I some need help.:D

Most boutiques will help you pick out things that go together. LB and Ave are 2 that come to mind. But you have to ask. And be willing to say, I don't like that, let's try something different. I'm not sure about Kohl's, but I'll bet the sales help at Macy's would be willing to help you pick out clothes that interact. Also ask to have several items that all work together. Just some thoughts on the subject....BJ

Thanks BJ, But the one problem I have is that I'm six foot and though Penny's sells tall's. They offer no help as there sales staff are behind a cash register.
Otherwise I can go to tall women's shops, but the prices are really up there.

Don't your stores have personal shoppers??? :hmmm:

I'm surprised none of the Brits have suggested any of these, so far -

Also try

etc, etc, etc...

Google 'Fashion Advice' - there's 35.1M results? :)

Karren, Billie Joe, Kris, Niki, Salandra, Teeeereeeeesa ! Thanks for responding.

I guess where I'm coming from is the sense of style, what really goes good with what. What really looks good any girl.

I just think It would be nice to have a service, like a personal shopper, like Niki said. To go with a girl to not only lend some confidence, but help find her look.

Myself I adore white. But not on me. White makes me look bigger.
Get what I mean yet ?

I think I would go to places like the local supermarket or mall and see what other ladies are wearing.

Unfortunately around here it's mainly jeans and tee shirts.

I agree with Brianna. Go someplace there are a lot of women, casually observe. It is a good start for observing fashion trends.

Hahaha, Brianna sure did hit the nail right on the head. If you go to Wal-Mart or the local shopping mall and watch other GGs, you come to the conclusion that all you need are pink sweatpants and a beer stained Nascar t-shirt! :lol2:

Seriously, watching other well dressed women is a good start. I just happen to have my wife as primo fashion consultant and partner in crime, so she is more than willing to go with me and help with my clothing purchases. After a while you get a sense of which tops go with which skirts / slacks, etc. And that if you want to blend in, you don't walk around in a micro-mini skirt and 5" heels, especially if you're 45 years old. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but be prepared to be NOTICED! A zebra in a herd of cattle is sure going to stand out. :heehee:

Joy,

If we lived closer, my wife, or I, or both of us, would be more than willing to help you!!! (Remember this if you come south anytime; we'll do the same next time we head to Ohio.) My wife and I have largely (mostly) different tastes in clothing, so shopping trips with us would be an experience -- fun to be certain, but absolutely looking at different styles. It is a very rare day that we ever buy anything that is even close to resembling what the other wears. Actually, this is a good aspect to consider b/c in just a couple of days with us, you could/would get several different perspectives on what to wear!!! Anyway, the offer is always open!!!

Joy, you just have to do it!

What you want, a sense of personal style, is something that takes years of learning. GGs develop this over their years growing up, and some never get it at all. Just practice. That's one of the reasons for trying on clothes. Shopping can be fun, but when you are actually shopping for a real wardrobe, it takes some work. Try things on. Ask the SA for her/his advice. Buy stuff and take it back. Shop the consignment shops for bargains.

There is stuff in my closet that I bought in the beginning that I never wear. There are things that look really good on me that I bought almost by accident. Just keep trying, hon. Practice. Eventually you will get a sense of your own style.

One of the things I do to help me is to buy out of a catalog. Then I know just what item goes with what. And always remember to think "outfit". Never buy just one thing without thinking about the whole outfit. If you listen at work, you will hear GGs talk about this. The go shopping for an OUTFIT. You don't really often hear them say, "I bought the cutest blouse yesterday", you will much more often hear them say, "I bought the cutest OUTFIT yesterday". Rememeber to shop for the whole "look" at once. Top, skirt, belt, hose, shoes, and jewelry. It all goes together. OK?

Lovies,
Stephenie

Well what I do is leaf through the Sunday sale ads and when I see something that looks nice stylish and current I just wander down to the store and try it on.. Ya can tell real quick in the dressing room if it looks nice or not.. And if you stay away from jeans and stick to casual skirts and painish dresses then tallness is not an issue!! Just means ya show more leg!! Always a plus in my book!!

I love Kohl's the best because they alway have nice things on sale, easy place to try stuff on.. .. Need to get over there and try on some of those new clothes from Vera Wang.. Simply Vera I think they are called..

I still make mistakes but through trial and error I have developed a 'look' which i am happy with and with which i am confident to go out dressed. the only way i could do it was going out en femme, trying stuff on in store and listening to feedback from SAs and my valued friends

I bet there's stuff you buy and it sits there for years too, before suddenly you find the right place/way of wearing it.. :winking:

IMHO, you need to first decide the style that you think is most appropriate for yourself. Then you can look at differnt outfits that suit that style. There are so many ways to dress and nobody but yourself can tell you what you should wear. There are sexy styles, trashy styles, elegant styles, professional styles... The list goes on and on.

A few years ago I once went to a lady near me that specializes in helping CD's. She is a really nice woman who claimed to be in her late fourties. I thought that would be great for me to go and see her. When I went to see her, she looked like whe was in her late sixties. Now I am not saying there is anything wrong with being in your late sixties, but I was under the impression that she was in her late fourties and would be a little more up to date on the latest styles. Anyway, by the time she was done with me I looked like my mom. She had me in a below the knee dress with a nice, but very conservative sweater, black heels that completely covered my feet with only a 1" wide old lady looking heel, and to top it off, she fitted me with a short permed wig. You know, the kind that looks like an older mom in the seventies. I know I am getting older, but sheesh should a girl in her thirties be dressing like that?

The point that I am making here is that only you can decide what style is good for you. Once you do that, you can get some help from somone local if you want to help you match colors, shoes etc...

Anyway, thats just my 2 cents. Good luck to you sis

I agree about being observant. Anywhere I go, whether I'm in drab or femme, I am constantly observing what's the most dominant or popular things that women wear.
These just are some of my observations, which is barely the tip of the iceberg. There are various skirts and dresses etc, etc. I haven't even touched on, but again if you observe carefully, not only at the malls or anywhere you are, but in magazines (Cosmo, In Style), cataloges (Victoria's Secret, Macy's), and on TV (What Not to Wear), then you'll get a good sense of what's hot and trendy.
