I went to Macy's this afternoon and picked out a satin robe and chemise sleep set, a couple of bras, a couple of camisoles and several kinds of panties all in different sizes. I usually get asked by the SAs if I need any help but today it seemed as if I had leprosy because I eventually had to go and get an SA to ask about using a dressing room. She said she didn't know if I could but would ask. It's hard to believe that I was the first CD she's ever seen! Eventually, after talking to the department manager a phone call was made to an assistant manager. He came and said it would be no problem and escorted me to a private dressing room. When I was finished trying everything on he apologized for the inconvenience and said that I should come back anytime--it would be no problem and even apologized for the SA. I ended up spending $92 on the satin robe and chemise, a nightgown, two camisoles and 4 pairs of panties.

I also was dressed in Gloria Vanderbilt jeans, women's loafers, a bra (with B forms), camisole, and a stretch top (under a light wind breaker). Only a touch of neutral lipstick.

The world still is turning and I expect the sun will rise tomorrow! It was a fun afternoon!

Wow! What a hassle. The Macy's I go to has the women's department upstairs, and the men's downstairs. Each with their own dressing rooms. Whenever I tell one of the employees that I need to try some stuff on, they just tell me I have to go to the men's dressing rooms.

The only time I kind of had a rough time there is when I went to get my band size measured. The girl working the counter claimed she didn't know how to do it, then proceeded to call the manager working that section who wanted me to come back the following day. My friend who was with me who is also a manager there found it to be ridiculous along with me, and her and I just did it ourselves.

I bought three bras after that. The girl working the counter was very young, and on her third day. So I took it easy on her. But I did tell her that making sales will make her look good, and if someone is willing to buy something, all she has to do is smile and say "yes".

It looks like everything worked out for you though, and Macy's is pretty good at satisfying their customers from my experience. Now that you mention those camisoles, I'm going to start looking into those. I don't own any, and they are so very sexy! :)

I understand that you want to spend your money. You have every right to try on what you're trying to purchase. But I ask you to please step outside yourself for a moment and examine the situation around you. This is the Christmas season. In retail it is a combination of tax time for cpas, rush week for fraternities and sororities, and a blizzard for the people in the transportation industry. Add in aspects of a stock market crash, a fire, a flood, and every aspect of murphy's law and you get the general idea. In addition you have the general underpaid nature of the retail industry, and the distict possibility that the SA you were dealing with is new or a temp. Just my :2c:, but please smile and say thank you to the SAs wherever you shop this season. We appriciate it.

Also keep in mind that there may well be children in the dressing rooms with their mothers.

You could've encountered a SA that was hired just for the seasonal rush, and therefore hesitant to make a decision without some guidance..

I had a much different experience that I wrote about last week--thought I would share it again since it is deep down on the thread. I have not had any issue with Macy's at all!

In my last outing I stopped at a major department store with a big red star. I was looking at formal dresses and the salesperson said "I guess I dont have to start a dressing room for you" I dont know what triggered my response but I said "guess not cause I have not found anything that I want to try on" with a sarcastic smile. She was thrown. She then asked if I was looking for an outfit for a sepcial occasion. I answered that the occasion generally comes from the outfit and kept looking and touching the long dresses. She responded with if I had a color preference. I said in a half joking response that I needed to find a dress to go with a pair of black velvet heals that I just purchased. Without missing a beat she pulled the most wonderful dress off of the rack and said that she bought the same dress last week. The price was less than the cost of the fabric. She said that I was welcome to try it on--store was slow--no one in the dressing rooms. I froze but after looking at the dress I said I are you sure? She said yes and asked how high my heel was on my shoes. I said probably 3 inches and the next thing I know I was lead to the dressing room with her carrying the dress. I had on pretty underthings on which is not uncommon when I shop. The dress was like a magnet. I went in in drab and she floated outside to make sure that I was alone. I was shaking trying on the dress. My head was buzzing. The dress fit perfect. She came back and asked how I was doing and asked if I wanted to step out onto the platform to look in the mirror. I was not ready for that although I really wanted to. I bought the dress and got such nice complements from her on my taste. She told me all about the function that she wore the dress to and the complements she got. OMG I have shopped for years but never expereiece this level of personal connection.

I left with my new found confidence and purchased the shoes that I discribed earlier, in the shoe department of the same store carrying my dress in a large dress hanger bag!--same thing--no bias.

I've been shoppoing for womens clothes for almost 15 years and I honestly believe that the sales staff has never been more accepting than they are now! I hope this may inspire anyone who is shy in finding their dream outfit to push aside thier fears and realize that every salesperson wants to see that smile on a customers face regardless of gender.

Has anyone else noticed how approachable salepeople have become? Was it always this way or has the world changed in a positive way for us?

Mary Beth,
I have had mixed results shopping at stores en femme.
Dress Barn was fantastic, helped me find a suitable dress for Easter, on sale. Other stores, like Carsons and the old Marshall Field, now Macy's, were quite cold and almost rude. So I think it is still uncertain how I will be accepted, depending on the clerk, time of day, store "image", how many other customers are there, etc. So, yes some are more accepting, but there is still some which don't like us. I know some say, 'all they care about is the money", but that is not as easy as it sounds...

Having said that, I still shop in stores en femme, and expect good service, and usually use the changing rooms for ladies. I have never been refused, alto sometimes it is self service and I just go in.

So shop on, girls, but just be aware that sometimes you just have to skip places where we are not appreciated and move on to others who are...

Yeah, I tend to agree, it's sort of hit-or-miss regarding how well you're treated by the sales staff. I too had my best experience at dress barn but have had a less welcoming reception elsewhere...

Gosh Mary Beth; what a wonderful experience. I bet you will go looking for that Sales Assistant next time you go out shopping.

I had two great experiences at Nordstrom yesterday. (I hope I am not hijacking the Macy's thread). Apart from some dangly earrings I was in my normal androgenous mode.

Some high heel boots were on sale. I asked a female SA if they had them in size 10 or 11 (10.5 is my ideal size). The Male SA beside her jumped in quiclky, with "Let me look up on the computer, they do go to size 12", then responded with, "No, not in red sorry." Then to my surprise he said "Let me go look in the back to see if we have them in black, so you can try them on and see how they fit, and if they work we can order the red ones for you." Well I suppose the "size 11" part was a bit of a giveaway, but he went out of his way to accomodate me. Alas, he didn't have them in black either.

Later musing over two blouses another SA asked if I needed help. I said I was not sure of the sizes, could I try them on. Sure, she said and led me into the ladies dressing room and found me a cubicle. They did fit and I bought them, giving her the sale credit at checkout.
