Rupaul,,Eddi Izzard have both made a living out of crossdressing,,,

as for other actors i only know of their ON Screen cding:2c:

Grayson Perry the award winning artist over here and Eddie Izzard are among the best known, I'm not sure I'd include RuPaul (Drag Queen) or Alexis Arquette (TS) in the "cross-dressing category though..........

If you're an artist or performer then you may survive, but would a senior politician or service personnel?

Eddie himself has publicly acknowledged how hard it would be for an accountant, or policeman or lawyer to come out as an vanilla Transvestite (or Cross-dresser if you prefer). That is someone, for example, like me- hetero, married, a known business person who just happens to have a bloody good time in a frock two or three times a month.

How about J. Edgar Hoover, the first head of the F.B.I. in America, a known cross-dresser. It has also been suggested that Hitler indulged, but that could be just hearsay.

I don't believe Hitler CD'd but one of his top Lieutenants did, I can't remember which one but he was head of the Wehrmacht and had a reputation for seducing young handsome "Heros of the Reich" who had come to his estate to be decorated for valor. Hitler himself was extremely conservative, not even believing in extramarital sex. Just bits and pieces I picked up in reading.....Stephanie

Just read something about Hitler this week in "Why do Men Have Nipples" book. Seems that Eva B. (no relation):heehee: would be required to deficate and urinate on him. So I don't think the Kinky train missed his stop too often.

Earnst Roehm if I remember correctly. He was head of the SA..."The Brown Shirts." He represented a threat to Hitler's Power and eventually Hitler had him murdered. One of the justifications given: "He indulged in perversions with his young disciples." Nobody really knows the truth about the allegations.

Peace and Love, Joanie

And, you all forgot Marv Albert. Sportcaster, macho guy, and according to The Girlfriend, A Crossdresser.

He had to lay low for awhile, but now he's back doing broadcasts. As I remember ALL of the allegations were pretty spectacular. Just shows that we can survive anything!

Actors can always claim it was only for the role and not get stuck with the label as CD.

Guiliani was seen in a video crossdressed but it hardly proves anything as far as his personal life.

The real problem is in the personal lives of the many not famous and how it affects them far from the glare of the news media.

Like the quote from Eddy Izzard.

I'm not famous, but i do have groupies that come out to the faires to see me, and just about everyone I know within my circle of influence knows about Zarabeth... except work (when i had it).

Having seen firsthand several accounts of what happens to someone that lets that secret out of the bag in the work environment has led me to believe that its better to not say anything. Watching people who held high paying jobs, did great work, had no problems to being unemployed ostricized from their careers because of what they did elsewhere sickens me.

The workplace (not ALL of them) has a lot of "good old boys/girls" with their own set of employment "rules" that suddenly emerge that enables them to get rid of an "undesireable element" within their midst in order to return harmony and balance to their sacred workplace. Right or wrong matters not and they still do it. I've seen good friends that had spent over 15 years suddenly turn ugly really fast over it.

Our society has a long way to go, but until things change I'm keeping it out of the workplace.

*hugs*

Marvin Gaye was a cross dresser, but kept it hid from the public. Apparently his father who shot him also did some cross dressing. Its all in a book called "Mercy, Mercy Me" It might have affected his popularity had the public known, but who knows?

I seem to remember a photo of Brad Pitt in a prom dress that he wore during his senior year of high school... doesn't necessarily make him a crossdresser. Which is too bad--as I recall, he was quite convincing and very natural.

How about Patrick Dempsey, a.k.a. 'McDreamy'? He has a new movie coming out this summer called 'Made of Honor' ("A guy in love with an engaged woman tries to win her over after she asks him to be her maid of honor")... the trailer shows him in a bridesmaid's dress... again, not enough to label him, but I will take any credibility I can get!

Ray Parker Jr. The guy who sang Ghostbusters. I was at a bar one day with a buddy I don't remember how the subject came up, but we were talking about Ray Parker Jr. and what happended to him. He said something like "Until Ray wore that dress in his video and looked like he was enjoying it too much."
He said that it put a end to his career.

I looked it up on You Tube a while back and saw it and Ray was in a skirt and top and heels but no makeup and still had his mustache. I tried to find it before typing this but could not.

There was another singer who did a song with the line in it "Mister or Miss" it was from the 80's but I can't remember who it was.

There really aren't a whole lot of examples of famous people who were known as a fact to be crossdressers...at least not in the truest sense of the word. I did a search on Google and this forum topic came up as number three, so you know right away we're in a lot of trouble. Wikipedia lists a few, many of whom I have never heard of at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-dressing. Kurt Cobain was probably the most surprising one to me.

One that I did not find on their list is Ed Wood Jr. He made the film "Glen or Glenda" which was all about his real life crossdressing. A pretty bold move if you ask me, especially during the time that he made it. Did his crossdressing help or hinder his career? Well he died a broke alcoholic who had resorted to working in the pornography business, but he did get voted Worst Director of all time and that's got to count for something. Doesn't it?

I think fame, being a known crossdresser and success don't seem to have gone together that often over the course of history. It's sad, but maybe things will change as more of us get out there, make it big and live amazing lives! Any volunteers?

If one or two percent of the population are crossdressers the lack of famous crossdressers shows how closeted most of us are. The names mentioned here include a few famous crossdressers such as Eddie Izzard, many people who are rumored to be crossdressers and several performers who have performed in drag. It is sad that we feel that we must hide our crossdressing.

Two deceasded actors who were VERY secret CDs. One was Jeffery Chandler, rugged he male actor married to Esther Williams the swimmer actress who selfishly and viciously outed him in her autobiography after he he died . A cruel thing to do to the dead, your former husband.

The other was the black actor Howard Rollins Jr. who was an up and coming promising actor of 1981 and made films like Ragtime, A soldiers Story, and starred for several years in the TV series In the Heat Of The Night.
He WAS outed by the tabloids and it ruined his career and life. He was fired from the series and died and early death from disease.

It is sad that we feel that we must hide our crossdressing.

And that's just it. Odds are there are probably other famous people who were genuine crossdressers that we'll never know about because they had to keep it a secret or face public embarrassment. The comic performers and other entertainers who dress in drag on stage as part of their act don't count as far as I'm concerned. They are doing that for laughs or shock value or whatever, not because it's who they really are as a person inside.

Sorry to hear about the friends you lost. That's painful. Just remember that you are not alone by any means. I too have had "friends" turn on me and disassociate from me when they found out about my dressing (through secondhand sources by the way). I've also lost girlfriends, work and who knows what else just because I like to dress up as a woman. Apparently it's just a horrible, awful thing that no "normal" person can deal with...so they have to hate us. We are like Frankenstein to them.

Don't let it get you down. Make new friends. Better friends. Friends that accept you for who you are.

It was done "in the best possible taste" with the late Kenny Everitt.
Theres also Dame Edna Everage (Barry Humpries) and Lily Savage (Paul O'Grady). Even The Two Ronnies got in on the act and Little Britain. The list goes on Les Dawson and the Queen video "I want to break free". Did not harm their careers, but a few have since died.

Irving Thalberg became the founder of film industry's major association and the Oscars.
Every year or so someone in that industry receives the Thalbeg award for their contributions. However it was well known that when at home (a mansion) he would come down for dinner with his wife while completely en femme. He would be seated at one end of a long dining room table with his wife at the other end while their servants served dinner.

So, getting back to the point originally made; if you're not an artist/ performer or playing a role in a movie or a totalitarian dictator's best friend you may have trouble coming out as a simple vanilla TV/ CD.

I have a black tie charity event to attend in March; business leaders and politicians from all over Scotland, somehow if I popped into Coast or Monsoon for the dress I really would prefer to wear rather than my kilt, I might as well pen my resignation letter now.

Exactly. They'll be throwing haggis at you and talking about what a weirdo you are behind your back. Then the next thing you know people are making up excuses not to do business with you and then stop communicating with you altogether. You'll find yourself asking, "What happened to all my friends?"

[QUOTE=JenniferR771;1142821]I think it was Jim Bridges, the crossdresser not Jim Bailey. He operates a boutique and salon in LA. Google him.

Jim Bailey is also an artist who is famous for his impersonations of Judy Garland.
I can't remember where I learned this, but Neil Diamond is also rumored to be a cross-dresser.
Also, there is Charles Pierce. He's passed away in 1999, but was one of the most famous female impersonators of his time. I never got to see one of his shows, but his concert dates in San Francisco was always given much fanfare. Much like when famous opera stars came into town to give a concert. Both Pierce and Bailey were (and are) regarded as the finest in the art of female impersonation.

Most of the celebrities mentioned crossdressed to get laughs or some other reaction. I think that's a little different than what most of us do. Joe Namath's career as a football player/sort of celebrity was not hurt at all by wearing pantyhose in a Television ad, but it did cause a bit of a stir at the time. Things really have changed. Nothing really shocks anymore, where famous people are concerned. And if it does, we move on pretty quickly. In a wierd paradox, it's normal, everyday folks like us that cause the most negative reaction when we are outed/discovered.

The Hoover story is a widely debunked myth. It was created to blackmail Hoover. Now I am no fan of Hoover whatsoever and with it were true but its not. There is a whole book written about this.

One of my closest friends until his/her death in 2003 was a CD who was very famous both in Hollywood and on Broadway. He was married to one of the most beautiful and famous stars who during their entire 25 year time together did not crossdress because the wife requested that he not. Shortly after her death in 1997 he came out of the closet big time and on his 80th birthday invited many of his Hollywood and Braodway friends to his birthday party in NYC where they met "Gail" for the first time. My wife and I will always cherish that night and the many weekends we spent at Gail's home. Actually the only star who gave him problems about his being out as Gail was Kathryn Hepburn - herself a female to male CD. We do not believe he lost many of his famous friends after his "outing".

Billy Lee Tipton (born as Dorothy Lucille Tipton,[1] December 29, 1914 - January 21, 1989) was an American jazz pianist and saxophonist. Tipton became the subject of public interest posthumously when it was revealed that Tipton, who had lived for decades with a male identity, was biologically female.

but then no one knew so not sure that counts

Anyone mention RUFUS WAINWRIGHT yet?

He's a singer/songwriter, openly and proudly gay, NOT a drag queen. But he does cross-dress both on and off the stage. He did a tour recently reprising Judy Garland's famous tour, and he wore several of her outfits. Hasn't hurt him a bit. As a matter of fact, he's getting to be very much in demand.

Video of Rufus celebrating Judy:

Obviously, he doesn't try and be femme, either. He's just Rufus, and he does whatever he wants! :D

Here's one of Rufus on the French and Saunders comedy show, and it's good for a giggle:

He tours all over the world to sell-out crowds.
