View Full Version : "Manly jobs"

Jill

I was thinking and became curious. How many people here have what most people might consider, a "manly" job. I guess I mostly just want to prove that CDers are just really regular people. So I would like to hear from the mechanics, the construction workers, the carpenters, the police men, etc.

I work in youth corrections, which I think is a fairly gender neutral field. It's pretty 50/50 male and female where I work. What about other people?

Last job before retirement was manager of a Lumber/Hardware outfit. Loading lumber, concrete, forklift driving, and part of the day working with the cashiers and office staff...best of both worlds.

I honestly have my doubts that there is any such thing any more Jill. I had a job that was pretty physically demanding at times and originally considered a "male" position. However in the late 1970's women started filling those positions in my company and many did a lot better than the guys, in fact I learned quite a bit from those gals and had a lot of respect for them. That just proved to me that folks are capable of many things if they put their mind to it no matter who they are.

I was a market research consultant supervising business surveys, doing data analysis and building forecasting models.

Not a job that is particularly reserved to males even though a lot of the other consultants were also males.

Note that with technology evolution male vs female jobs has become more of a statistical observation than a necessity linked to the harshness of working conditions.

I’m a part time lingerie model ……..and a full time liar.:heehee:

No, I’m a rep for a medical company. It’s not very challenging compared to what I used to do, but I’m on my own and basically can do what I like. The customers (nurses) are all lovely to work with and we get on fine. The best thing is it's light work, my hands never get dirty and I can grow my nails long. It's a bit of a girly job really - I love it!

Among the girls I know who have transitioned, I can straightaway think of two in the Royal Navy, one the British Army, a police officer, one crane driver in a large steel plant, several working in machine shops (including one owner of a light engineering company), a trucker, a roadie working for a high-profile rock band, a plasterer working fulltime on construction sites (serious respect)...

I get dirty everyday, out in whatever mother nature decides to throw at me, and I still wear what I want under my winter coat and Carharts. High tower work, greasy enclosed spaces, high voltage electrical, all types of equipment and machinery. I used to work printing, but I worked bindery, which where I worked, they had a pretty even number of males as females. For machine operators, its about 90% male.

I worked retail at a department store, which was mostly women. Some nights I was the only guy. I guess the ratio was about 70/30 women/men.

I worked at a women's clothing store for 2 months in shipping. I was the only guy.

In college, my program was mostly men. Multimedia. Not a particularly manly job, but I guess guys tend to get into computers more.

Where I work now, in publishing, its about 2 women and 9 men in my specific department.

The Mechanical Engineering / CAD Designer jobs I've had are mostly male dominated. I rarely see women engineers. Of the 30 or so CAD Designers at my current job only 2 are females. And a lot of guy talk goes around, so it would be bad if they found out I was wearing panties. Well, I don't want to get my collection of panties dirty and worn out, so I only wear a few sacrificial ones. Or maybe I'll stop, because panties are expensive compared to a pack of men's Fruit of the Loom.

I dont know how "manlly" my job is.. I am a Surveillance investigator for a large casino company.. I have to carry handcuffs every day and my main "job" = (just over broke), is catching theives in the act or after the matter and compiling a "case" against them to be found and prosecuted in a court of law.. or just company protection.
Believe it or not.. "most" of the theives in my area are actually lil'ol ladies who just dont know any better... But there are always a few real BAD guys..
And yes I sometimes wear pantyhose under my workclothes sometimes, but it gets kina hot.. And no I could not ever go to work dressed up, = a problem for everybody..

It could be that those of us with "masculine" jobs or careers surrounded by guys need a break now and then from the traditional roles that we perceive we have based on societal norms. In other words, crossdressing is a form of relaxation; a way to slough off the man skin for a few hours. I feel this way personally because there isn't a chance in hell I would ever want to actually be a woman.

2. How receptive were you to genetic female firefighters? Did you encourage them or did you subcumb to the peer pressure of demonizing them?

1. I wanted to be a firefighter since I can remember.

2. I encourage them, as long as they can do the work, but that goes for anyone male or female.

I'm in the closet, noone knows, I couldn't imagine what the guy's would do if they found out. I do however wear pantyhose to work, but take them off when in uniform. I wear pantyhose most of the time when I'm in my man clothes though. My wife may have an inkling, because she calls if she's comming home at a different time.

Thank goodness we had the equal rights movement in the 60's. There are women attorneys and judges all over the place now. Still, some glass ceilings to break through in some partnership circles and boardrooms. . . And its been a one way revolution, a male secretary or paralegal is still freakishly rare.

In my "manly" past, I have coached high school football and high school basketball, so if any of you have put on pads (on your shoulders that is) think about your coach wearing panties and toenail polish under his athletic clothes.

I work with explosives in the oilpatch. Manly enough? I can wear panties and pantihose under my coveralls!

Retired panel beater and part time spray painter. No ambitions to go back on the tools in the forseeable future.
Currently a truck driver. Being out and about is great for looking at clothes shops but not good for my wallet or credit card.

I help put food the table. Sometimes clean desk work, sometimes dirtier than dirty.

I am the crew chief for a auto racing team. Lot's of testosterone-fueled aggressiveness all around.

Even the girls dress like men!

Auto mechanic/service manager. Retired volunteer firefighter. It would always take the gg's longer to get to the fire station at night, I asked one of them why one night, she said you try to put on a bra, see how long it take you, I said I would if she gave me one, I still have it.
