Having been away from this forum for a while, and come back to see this thread, and had a look at some of Taylor's vds on you tube, he sounds one hell of a guy

Just read that too Zen, thanks for updating though there may be times when they are posted frequently then kind of drop off. Very normal all things considered.

Respirator tubes are a bitch! They are 'scratchy' feeling, like a really bad sore throat. You can't talk around them either and since we all know Taylor loves to talk...it has to be frustrating ;) If you wonder why they haven't removed it yet most likely they are detecting a fluctuation in O2 saturation. Until it hits a steady 96% + (depending on the medical circumstances), most doctors will not remove them. There is also the consideration of ongoing medical treatment so it may have to stay put a little longer. Not a fun thing. Taylor will also most likely not have much for a voice at first since the tube irritates the vocal cords but a whisper can be heard louder than a shout.

There will be ups and downs for Taylor the next coming weeks. Its just the body kind of running around healing one organ, then another, and oh - we need to do some fine tuning on that one...it is a marvel.

No rush. We are all in this for the long haul no matter how long it takes.:hugs:

Has Taylor been to a hospital before?

I've been in the hospital twice for major emergency surgery. From my experience being a patient in a hospital sucks and gives you a healthy fear of getting sick, but once it was over I forgot about all the crappy stuff - I only have vague memories of the pain/crappiness. Yay brain!

As I got healthier and they removed tubes and stuff from me and I could walk around the hospital wing, there came a point near the end where I just wanted to get out of the hospital NOW and the time was getting long.

Btw it's amazing what your body will do to protect itself... I had abdominal surgery and when I'd sneeze I would block it consciously, but once a sneeze snuck up on me and I had a full sneeze (which usually involves involuntarily flexing abdominal muscles), only the sneeze stopped at my upper chest. My subconscious blocked it.
Oh, and if you make him laugh, and he tells you not to make him laugh, DO NOT MAKE HIM LAUGH, but I doubt laugher would cause him physical pain.

The breathing tube is out! Taylor is breathing independently now which is wonderful! Got the recent message that there has been a hoarsy request for ice cream! We are all so relieved to say the least.
Still some very critical issues such as the kidneys but each day seems to present a little more hope. Thanks for your continual prayers....what a miracle we've seen this week!

He's on a roll with this request thing!

Taylor is talking although a bit disoriented at times. Still very weak although able to communicate needs and wants. A & W rootbeer has been requested as well as Taco John tacos and watermelon. Taylor says, "My body feels strange" and "when can I go home?" Hopefully, there will be a move out of ICU today or tomorrow to progressive care.

Overall, things are going remarkably well and it's exciting to see the progress each day.

I just feel to pieces reading this. I never do good with trauma and was almost in tears reading through these posts. The candles are so lovely and I would have been so oblivious if not for them.

Taylor continues to make improvements each day. Speech is getting better although there is still a degree of disorientation and confusion. I think a sense of humor has returned and so many things are said to make us smile. We are all overjoyed and so happy to see Taylor coming out of this. Please pray for the swelling to go down and kidneys to start functioning again. It may be a long recovery process but at least we see progress each day.
I'm so glad the family fought for Taylor and didn't give up (especially sister, Neesy----she's tough!). The doc told us all at the beginning to "pull the plug" that Taylor wasn't going to make it. This experience has really made me see that God is in control and He is the ultimate authority, no matter how bad things look.
P.S.--Thanks for the balloons and teddy bear Jennia! They arrived yesterday. Taylor loved them!

yvw!...doctors said id never walk and talk but they were wrong, people need to search inside themselves for what they think the answers are, not listen to bleeding doctors who like playing with lives, to them Taylor is just another statistic, only the people around him truely know what an amazing young man he is....Taylor gave them a sign not to give up and im so glad the family took it :)...WtG Taylor you show those doctors they haven't a clue

It's hard being the doctor and avoiding giving people false hope, though. I have enough of a medical background to know that Taylor should not be alive today - that's why I've used the word "miracle". But not everyone gets better. For a doctor to say that a condition is "hopeful" and then have the person die...I wouldn't want to be that doctor. They don't like telling families that a patient is most likely going to die, but it's their duty to give accurate information.

When they said he was objecting to the tube, I really felt that things had turned around....Doctors are not wrong to be realistic with families, but they should most certainly NOT recommend premature action like pulling tubes, either....There should be middle ground....Give time to see which way it goes, realistically tell families when it doesn't look good, but that sometimes things do happen which are unexpected....It's a shame people, especially doctors, take extreme positions when they can be wrong and sometimes ARE. Makes you want to tell your families not to give up on YOU if anything should ever happen, doesn't it? :(

I'm late to this party, and I confess that I don't know Taylor. Heck, I really don't know a whole lot of you here anymore, but it's nice to make your acquaintence either once again, or for the first time.

I only got wind of this because I saw the "Candles for Taylor" banner under CaptLex's name near his avatar. I PM'd him and he was kind enough to fill me in. He suggested that I come in here and get to know some of you guys, and that seems like a good idea, too. After all, we're all part of the same sideways family, aren't we?

Taylor is obviously very well thought of here, and that speaks volumes. I hope for a decent recovery. It's likely that there will be a long and hard road back to good health, though. Are there any updates on his condition and his prognosis?

I will say a prayer for Taylor.

Latest update on his site:


Taylor is in a really uncomfortable part healing and not feeling too well. But, the disorientation is mostly gone and the fiesty personality is definitely coming back. Breathing is still very difficult due to excess fluid on the lungs. Dialysis seems to help with that. We're really praying for those kidneys to kick in soon. There's been very little urine output. Dialysis is very laborious....3 1/2 hours worth and you have to stay on your back.
We're trying to help as much as possible, doing massage on the back, legs and arms to increase circulation and trying to keep the positives coming rather than the negatives.

And if anyone wants to send a card or something, the address to send it to is on his site where the above update is.

Latest update from Angie. Sounds like a rough ride for our lad. Keeping him in my thoughts and prayers still.


Taylor is having surgery to put in a permanent catheter in the chest to prevent infection from dialysis. They have a temporary port in now and feel it best to do something permanent until the kidneys regain function. That will take place tomorrow. The kidneys are still not working normally (although there has been some output) and there is still alot of fluid on the lungs. They did a CT scan to see if they may need to aspirate some of the fluid. Poor Taylor is having such a hard time breathing. Please keep praying. This may be a slow, painful recovery for dear Taylor. They are talking about rehabilitation afterwards which could be anywhere from 6 wks to 6 mos. But, on a brighter note, Taylor is alive and fiesty and demanding as all get out, so that is good!

Your care for our precious Taylor is beautiful-thanks to each and every one of you for expressing it so. Taylor is doing much bettter. Breathing has improved greatly, after they took out over several liters of fluid that was in the body. The nurse I spoke with seemed very kind, simply emphasizing that they needed to watch the fluid intake to discourage this from happening again. For now, they want to limit the fluid intake to about 1000 CC's a day. I think one person said that's about the size of a can of soda...
Tay was talking last night, and sounded wonderful....Still in the ICU, but was able to sleep well, and seems well cared for...

We got a call from the hospital this morning. They moved Taylor out of ICU which is great! We talked last night and his voice was strong and breathing has definitely improved.
It's been a tough week. We've all been very ill with the flu. I haven't been to the hospital to see Taylor since last Tuesday. Hope to be able to get up there soon.

My network folks shut off my address I was using for this server. They said it was being abused by hackers! Not sure just yet what was going on but I moved the box to a new address to get it back up. If it goes away again it will be because the box HAS been hacked and is doing something ugly on the network and needs to be fixed. I will try to find out what was causing the bad traffic.

I've been itching to post this for a few days but here' tis finally.....
Taylor is off dialysis this week since.....the kidneys are working! yipeeee! let's do the kidney shuffle! He is going to the bathroom normally and things seem to be getting better each day. Doc says Taylor may get to go home early next week.
There are still some hurdles to cross, of course, like how to walk and get around ambly. Still moving pretty slowly and painfully. But, to see Taylor off dialysis and off oxygen this week has been such a blessing. I've been so relieved and happy. I hadn't been up to the hospital in about a week since I'd been very ill with the flu. So when I went up yesterday I was surprised to see a thinner, more healthier Taylor.
Still have a ways to go but progress is certainly coming!!!! Very Happy

Yet more fabulous news

Taylor is off the diabetic diet now at the hospital which is a huge sigh of relief. So today I'm going to make him some requested foods. We're hoping this is a sign that he can come home really soon. We did have a slight setback and Taylor had to have dialysis yesterday but doc is still optimistic about things. Blood looks good today and if things keep improving perhaps it won't be necessary again.
I really hope Taylor can come home soon. He is not sleeping well and I think home will offer the comfort, peace and healing that is needed now. He is always asking me if I posted and what I've shared. I think there is a big need to connect with all of you again.
