Once, it was the fashion of long hair for young men.
Now the fashion has gone, but sometimes we notice smart men with very long hair.
I wonder whether they are crossdressers ?
What are the odds this long haired man in the street is a crossdresser ?

I'd say the odds are about the same as in any cross-section of society. I've heard that as many as 1 in 20 men crossdress, but I suspect that the real numbers are a bit higher. I mean, women's clothing is out there. General curiosity has got to snag a few guys now and then. Anyway, I think that if you took a bunch of long-haired guys in a vacuum, the same ratio would apply. Just my opinion.

I was at a gender conference once. And there was several girls there with natural hair. I told my friend I was there with, that I'd never look at a guy with long hair the same again. I also have a friend who is a CD that has long hair.

In the heavy metal and rock scene, long hair isn't so out of the ordinary, so I have some friends with longer hair, and don't think any differently of them.
I just don't grow mine out because I can't style it when it gets longer.

my hair has been long for several years now, not many guys i know have long hair......my thoughts are that it is a pain to manage. mine is long because my wife wants it long think, i would cut it short if allowed. however it is nice to create different looks, ie up for the office girl, bun for the maid or in a pony just to be playfull

I have long hair and I'm a crossdresser. Trouble is my hair is grey and I'm bald on top so I have to wear wigs. I doubt there is much of a connection between long hair and crossdressing.

I am letting my hair grow out and could so care less if someone did not think I fit in their nice little animal cracker world. I want my hair long and that is the only justification I need for doing it.
Hair is just hair, it does not mean you are gay, trans sexual, a crossdresser, or even a hippie. It simply means you like long hair and are willing to deal with the hassle of keeping it up.
Now getting my ears pierced and long nails... that to me means "this guys likes long nails and pierced ears"
If a man wants to be like a woman or a woman wants to be like a man who should even care? If someone is afraid they might hit on a tranny and be forever scarred, odds are their messed up childhood got a huge head start and gender bending is not going to make much of a dent.

Many Many years ago before my bud married my sister and I got married, we were in a local bar. My bud was looking at the person with really nice long blond hair. This was in the 70's and there was a blur of men and women fashions then. My bud decided to ask this person to dance. He went over and just as he decided to touch this person on the shoulder, this person turned his way and HE had a really nice mustach. My bud quickly came back over to our table. I had a very hard time not laughing out loud. He was very much embarssed about it. I got looking at this person and my thoughts were, get rid of the stash and he make a great looking woman.

Length of hair is just not a gender issue anymore. Some of the most manly guys I have met have long hair, and some beautiful women have extremely short hair. I'm sick of wigs, and would really like to start growing my hair, but unless I start using hormones (the jury is still out on that one) I will need help from a can of rogaine! Anyway, I don't think hair length is generally an indicator of anything anymore. Long hair on a guy might mean he's a biker, but that's about it.

Melissa:)

I know a guy that has really long red hair and beard, and he is not a CDer or gay. Hair length has nothing to do with it. I think some guys have short hair so they can wear a wig, for me I like mine long. Although I do wear a wig when dressed.

In my neighbourhood, very few guys have long hair ; I'd say about 1 out of 20 to 50 guys.
I presume from the first answers here that the ratio of long haired ones in the CD population is a bit higher (1 out to 10 or more I guess).
I will consider a poll to get more precise figures.

A man having long hair, used to mean, in the 1950's, he was a musician, or some sort of intellectual, and if your hair got a little long, people used to joke, 'It is getting near time you bought a violin.' In those days, Einstein was the most public man to have long hair.
Then around 1966, the Beatles came to public attention here, and if you had long hair, it meant you were a Beatles fan. A couple of years later, it meant that you were a hippy, as that generation of bohemian was called, (the earlier ones having been called beatniks).
Recently, piercing, blue nail polish and long hair seems to mean, at least if you are a young male, that you are a rock fan or wannabe rock star, most likely in respect to punk rock.
I don't know if the latest thing to suspect, if a man wears long hair, is that he is a crossdresser. Certainly, these days I seem to get a certain number of unwelcome smirks when I wear my unisex, longish-hair toupe, around the apartment building, (when not dressed as a woman). I know the toupe is not very feminine, because when I wear it when dressed as a woman, it is an obstacle to my passing.
But then, with most women wearing fairly butch hair styles, pants, big boots, going without earrings, and with little visible make-up, maybe there is not such a big difference these days that it does not take much to be suspected of being a cross-dresser. Time will tell. I just wish the gender prejudice that makes it a stigma or funny, would pass.

When I was younger and I lived in the USA, I had vey long hait. But it was in the mid seventies... Even though I was working for a very conservative corporation, I've never had any comments. It never crossed my mind that my long hair could be a sign of my crossdressing.
I don't think it was associated then to crossdressing. For one reason, cross dressing was even less known then than it is nowadays...
Having long hair was sometimes associated to being homosexual, but not frequently. It was more seen as a sign of being a Hyppie... Note that I was living in the area of Woodstock NY...
One nice thing though was that I could crossdress very easily with my long hair. Too bad I didn't know more about x-dressing and about the possibilities of going out then...
Unfortunately my hair is now short... And in addition I have a bald spot on top...

I have long hair down to my waist, but it has nothing to do with crossdressing. I listen to metal, and tend to live inside my head and analyze everything to death. So my long hair overlaps with two other applicable stereotypes.
It has come in handy when I crossdress, though. Sometimes I tuck the lower half of my hair into a dress or blouse and create the illusion of a fuller mid-length-bob-like hairstyle. (The illusion only works from the front, though. Which is fine for the mirror.)

I was recently at a medical trade show and noticed what I thought was a women in a pant suit walking down the asle. What got my attention was the long braded ponty tail that came down to the middle of this person's back. Then this person turned around and I could clearly see that it was a man. A female co-worker also noticed this person and was amazed that he had such long hair. She too first thought it was a woman. I looked closer at this person and come to the conclusion that he was either Asian or Middle Eastern.

yes think men with long hair might be a higher percentage of cross dressers than rest of population . a few women in my life have enjoyed brushing my long hair.. most of them at some point have told me my hair was so long it would be down past my bra strap.. ..that's how i came out to my best friend.. when.she wanted to trim my hair i showed up wearing my sheerest little whisp of a bra under my tee shirt ..well she was right my hair was down past my bra strap.. untill she curled it ..teee heee too much fun .. will post longer storie later ..long soft flowing hair on my shoulders and breasts very nice feeling ..

Back when hair metal was the rage me and all my friends had long hair. It seemed to be the style in late 80s early 90s. Will someone please tell me when glam rock is coming back? New York Dolls anyone?

I personally have had long hair for years, and I never knew I WAS a crossdesser, I wore it long but cut blunt with no layers as I was worried that it would look too feminine. How silly of me, now I went and got layers cut so it WOULD look feminine! I am glad that I can have curls and feminine styles without having to wear wigs, I hope to be able to for many years to come. I don't think it is necessarily indicitive of being a crossdresser, though I wouldn't have thought I was one either...Hmmmmm. Oh and I have worn my nails fairly long off and on for years too, with and without polish, way before I started dressing again though, what does that say now that I am out as a CDer? Maybe it was latent in me and it was being expressed by my hair and nails and overall style. Who can say, I think making any kind of judgemnet or generalization without talking to the individual in question is a pointless gesture. Everyone is different and the more labels you come up with, the more people will deviate from the standards being applied.
