I've already used that anecdote but I think it just applies so well here again:
In a taxi, the client asks the driver:
"How do I get to Carneggie hall?"
"Practice, practice, practice..."
Replied the cab driver...
Same with x-dressing "Practice, practice, practice..."
There are several websites dedicated to makeup fundamentals.
One good advice here is also to look at how other girls your age are dressed and to try to get some ideas from them... (It is OK to only look at those dressed in skirts or dresses :heehee:)
Then I think that there is no substitute to experience. The more you will x-dress and test your x-dressing in front of other x-dressers, but even better in front of women, the more your x-dressing will start to look natural.
Showing yourself to others doesn't have to be face to face, showing pictures of you in serious forums as this one will allow you to test yur progress with the "femme look"... Don't be afraid, other girls are quite nice...

Yeah, I, erm, think I figured it out too....
There are guidelines on how to dress and do makeup but there aren't really any hard and fast rules.
So, pick up where you left off and go from there.
Consider the look you would want, and then modify to fit your age and size.
MAkeup - in the beauty area, DanaJ has a couple of locked threads at the top about makeup.
Don't forget about youtube also, there are some short instructional vids...
It is a lot to absorb at first. But I say do some research before spending any money, cause if you buy first, you will probably find out "Oh god, this is not my color at all, but it looks so good in the photo of tat model..."

Posting here is a good start. The girls here will give you all kinds of advice from make-up to shopping to bodyshaping. We were all new to crossdressing once, even us lifelong dressers, so we understand. Don't be afraid to ask if you have a question or two.
Another good bet is to see if there is a TG or CD group that meets in your area. Trust me, meeting other crossdressers can do wonders.

After football practice, while shopping for a new T shirt, suddenly "life" happened to Don!
He bought a bra, girdle and a cute little skirt instead! Prefers to be called,
"Donna" now. Who would have guessed?
The point is, as Michelle said, go with the flow! U have lot's of time to work it all out!

My tip is to find a better quality girlfriend.
That would be a good start.
Aside from that...start with inexpensive used clothing stores to find why styles and colors look best. Make up starter kits are pretty inexpensive but can give a good idea how to shade, blend, contour with something akin to working with two thumbs.
Just remember most all us gg's have years on this and still can't get it right, we keep trying though.

Take your time, enjoy each little step you take. Its useful to find a playground. A safe area or bar which is tg friendly and where you can practice without worrying.

I agree with Eugenie - PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE - with everything from makeup to walking in heels - the more you do it the better you will get - don't get frustrated when doing your makeup - experiment lots until you find the look you are comfortable with. It takes time but you will get there my dear..

One thing I wish I would have done differently when I started,Take my time. There are so many different choices to make, the rush to want to get everything at once is not practical.I have items I cannot use or return.I would suggest breaking down this process into segments.Spend a week on wigs, another week on tops,etc...Exaust all resources on a given segment before moving on.For me,if I don't want to take it off, usually I've got it right.
Make up is so different per user, lighting, color of clothing, skin type, its inevitable that trial and error will play apart here.To save some $ on make up try drugstore .com ,they have quality items for reasonable prices and free shipping.
