Bambi, 1942, Walt Disney Productions, dir, by David Hand.
the young prince of the forest is exploring his world and learning the names of it denizens. in a field of flowers, just introduced to him by thumper the rabbbit, bambi comes nose to nose with a young skunk. "flower?" he says, reducing thumper to fits of laughter for the thought of the aroma more commonly associated with skunks. thumper begins to correct bambi, but the skunk says "that's alright. he can call me flower if he wants to. i don't mind," batting bashful eyelids.
"an innocent accepts another being without preconceived notions dictated by nature, or by others. without prejudging, bambi looks for the best in the skunk - and finds it...respected him and accepted him for who he was, not what he was."
Pinsky, Mark A., The Gospel According to Disney, 2004, Westminster John Knox Press, Louisville, Kentucky.
a parable from the big screen.
call me a flower,
please,
jessie

And does the philosopher go on to explain to us the sweet, innocent, effeminate Bambi was also a he?

MY GOSH! It was our early Disney watching that brainwashed us into believing that alternative gender expression was really okay! And that labelling others by appearances was not!

Old Walt was a sly ol' philosopher, wasn't he?

deja

Why is Bambi a girl's name now?

(My head hurts. To many epiphanies in one early morning.)

Just finished my crunches. Still drinking my coffee. Like deja, this is a LOT to consider so early in the day.
The only thing I can think of is, if I had to name my warm morning slippers, it would be; Flowers! Phew!

So maybe I had it wrong all this time. I aslways thought of you gurls as butterflies, once you got your wings (inner-freedom).
Instead would it be more accurate to think of you as flowers?

It wasn't Bambi but Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fud in the Barber of Seville cartoon.

hi, girls!
ha, this was meant to be a light thread!
Disney was sly, his stuff is full of archetypes.
i know, the way i fell on my pink cloud i reall feel like a butterfly!
weeeee! watch me go ma!
Your laughter brings me sunshine
Everyday is spring time
And I am only happy when you are by my side
How precious is this love we share
How very precious, sweet and rare
Together we belong like daffodils and butterflies

Love is like a butterfly
As soft and gentle as a sigh
The multicolored moods of love are like its satin wings
Love makes your heart feel strange inside
It flutters like soft wings in flight
Love is like a butterfly, a rare and gentle thing

Love is like a butterfly, a rare and gentle thing
as sung by Dolly Parton.

but i think if i'd been named flower or butterly of jessica from the start,
the road i'm on, we're on, would have been commenced so much sooner.

but before Faline has twins at movie's end, i can imagine Bambi saying to the camera,
And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him
Bill or George! Anything but Bambi! I still hate that name!

i really dont mind...
