View Full Version : How Long Did it Take You to get used to it

Thursday evening I put on a set of long nails, complete with polish. I love looking down at my hands and seeing a beautiful set of nails. Two days later I am completely at ease with the longer nails and have integrated them with all my activities. It has amazed me that I got used to them so quicky and will be missing them dearly when I have to remove them tomorrow morning.
If you have had longs nails, how long did it take you to get use to them?

I think most of us adapt pretty quick to just about anything... be it long nails or walking in heels. Some things are just more awkward than others. Like I usually can do most anything in nails, but I have a hard time typing easily.

Happy Easter!
For the past four or five years I've worn a full set of acrylics, and for the past couple years, permanent French acrylics, which I absolutely love. If I do them in a color for an evening when I'm out of town without the wife, it's great to know I still have a clean, professional French manicure underneath when the color comes off.
My nail tech keeps my nails perpetually in the range of 3/16" to 3/8" beyond the ends of my fingers. She says her working women all prefer that range for the office - long enough that French-manicured fingers look unquestionably feminine, and short enough to not interfere with office duties. She also has a knack for sensing when the wife will start to complain...it's always just before she trims them back from the 3/8" length.
Once you have longer nails, they become second nature fairly quickly. I really wouldn't want to be without them. The only things you have to be careful of are things which can damage them, such as opening pop-top cans with them or using your nails as screwdrivers (what guy hasn't tried that at least once?), and you learn to push elevator buttons with your knuckles, not your nails. You generally lose the ability to pick up the dime or paper clip off the desk with your nails - you slide it off the edge, and into your other hand. But typing, filing and other office duties are no problem with nails of that length, you adapt quickly.
Yes, my tech keeps my toes done in a matching traditional French pedicure. It's a clean, attractive look, and she (as well as a couple of cd's who know about it) maintain that my matching finger and toe nails should be on display all the time, including work. However, with the wife complaining when I wear sandals on weekends. I doubt I'll ever get a concession on wearing open-toe shoes or sandals to work...
For now at least, I'll have to settle for feminine fingers during the week, and go with the matching look on weekends. Maybe someday "full time."
Sigh....

I've tried to grow my nails long, but they keep on cracking and chipping, I've tried nail hardner to little or no effect. Then I discovered nail extentions.
But I have to trim them, I just cannot get used to the length, tying shoe laces for one. My wife, whilst alive used to have fantasic long nails, having tried them for myself, I have nothing but praise for her, and for all of you who can successfully wear them. I just wish I could!
Nice but short nails Lesley Ann

I used to wear them and when I first put them on it took me a few hours I just stopped wearing the false nails and now I keep my natural nails long which is becoming a big thing with some of the men I see now.

I've kept my nails long since I was 13 my mom used to always take care of them for me when I was younger. She always had long natual nails and I wanted mine like hers ,so she helped me keep them long. Also knox gelitin drnk helps to make them stronger that is what my mom taught me about keeping my nails long and strong.

Long fingernails are truly evil and I will only wear them for formal occasions and the sinfully delicious holiday of Halloween

I've been wearing long natural nails for a couple of years now. No polish, just shaped and buffed. I keep tips just under 1/4" inch long on my fingers and just under 3/8" on my thumbs. I love the look, and only trim them back when it becomes difficult to do things like button a tight shirt button.
It did take some time to un-learn bad habits like using my nails to try to open a package or to scrape something. I slowly learned that my "nails are jewels, not tools!"
And I learned that being pissed off can be fun! When I break a nail it sure annoys me. But just being pissed off at a broken nail reassures my fem side in a most satisfying way! Now there's one for the amateur shrinks to ponder.

I have had long acrylic nails since 2005. Wife does not like it when I let them grow real long but will allow me to keep the long enough to extend past the tips. I can keep them about 1/8" to 1/4" past my tips, longer than that and wife is not happy. I also keep them polished with a pale Pink polish. Wife at first was afraid that they would be noticed and I would get bad comments about them. It seems that hardly no one notiecs and a few times my wife has even mention to others about my nails. Even then it has been very positive. In fact one time another woman showed my hands to her husband and said, "See some men DO take care of their hands and nails". A couple of times my wife has even mention to someone that I have my toes polished. That even doesn't seem to get a rise out of anyone. She even told my very religius older sister and all my sister did was roll her eyes and that was that.
IMHO having long acrylic nails and even wearing polish on ones toes does not seem to be a big deal with most people even if you point it out to them.
