You can take a look at Lauras-playground.com to see if they have a therapist within a distance you are willing to travel to:

If not, try doing a Google search for "Rochester" and "gender therapist" to see if anything worthwhile comes up.
Good luck! :)

Orrrr try the yellow pages. Some psychologists will advertise gender as a part of their practice. Could also try calling local health and mental health facilities.
Just make sure YOU INTERVIEW them before signing on.

Googling is probably the best idea.... I've found a few here on L.I. My take on therapy has been - and I'm sure as with everything someone will take issue - to see my therapist from prior sessions. Although she is not a gender-issues specialist (well not TG.. gay/lesibian she has done..), I view her non-specialty as a plus; she can be very objective with me and won't necessarily lead me down the wrong path. And of course I'm comfortable with her, which is the most important aspect.. Anyways, good luck with your search!

Keri -Interesting thought about using someone that is not specialized in GID. I will give that some thought. I did check the yellow pages there were only 3 that listed GID specialist. All on the other side of the city from me. If I have to I have to. But gas prices and all. But thank you all for your suggestions - the web site provided very information.
Have a great day

Golly Val! Something as serious as your desire for therapy shouldn't allow you to quibble about a coupla bucks for gas.
I don't live within 500 miles of anyone i can talk to openly. And there are many here who'd travel aross a state to see a good therapist.
As much as I've learned here, I'd still value a good therapist very highly. This isn't a manicure we're talking about here!
Go do it, honey!

I traveled an hour each way to see my shrink -- time that was well worthwhile.

Deja, I don't mind the travel but if there is some one on my side of the city why not - providing they are good - go close to home?
Thank you all for your encouragement - I can not tell you how much appreciate it.
Thank you

Sharon, Thank you so much for that link with therapists that are TG friendly! I've been wanting to go to a therapist for this for a long time, but being in San Antonio, Texas, it can be a crapshoot to find a psychiatrist that caters to our needs. And It's a she too!
By the way, I've never been to therapy before, does anyone have a ballpark figure of how much this is going to more or less run me? I know it can go indefinately, I just don't have alot of money so I need to know how much I'm going to have to save up.

Your insurance should cover it for you, figure on a range from $125-$175 per session.

My insurance only pays for five sessions per year, but my shrink only charged me $100 per hour session (and she was terrific, btw.) Just ask for the rates when you contact and make arrangements with the therapist.

You should check with your insurance first. My insurance pays for 30 sessions per year, but I still have to make a $20 co-payment at each session. After the 30 sessions, I have to pay the rest of the sessions myself till the year is up. :p
