I haven't written anything in a long time, but I have read many posts. I think I was in denial about being here.

I manage a HS Auditorium and provide Tech Assistance for all the events. Well it is that time of the year for dance recitals, suffice it to say the costumes would make everyone of us drool with envy.

The studio assigns two female dance teachers, D & K, both my age to run lights and sound while I sit by and make sure everything works. I have a huge crush on K, but she is dating someone. Anyways, at the end of the Saturday night show, the ladies started discussing what they would wear to the Sunday recitals. D said she was gonna wear pants and K said a dress. I matter-of-factly said I guess I will be wearing shorts. Then D said I should wear a skirt and K said with heels like we do at these events (even though they change into shoes while in the booth).

I found a black pencil skirt in the costume room and already had the 2 1/2" black pumps. So Sunday, I changed right before they got in and stayed in the Tech Booth. D was wearing pants, but K wore capris. I pointed out to K that we all discussed what we were gonna wear, how could she not follow through, after all I wore a skirt - then I pulled away from the counter to reveal my skirt. Both broke out laughing then called in the other Dance Teachers. D and K insisted that I wear that for the day, but by intermission I changed because I had things to do out of the booth and didn't want to draw any unwanted attention. Yes, pics were taken and everyone thought it was funny and quite bold of me to do. One of my tech kids worked upstairs in running a follow-spot and walked past me many times and never noticed. I even called him down to check on something for me - since I couldn't leave the booth. He never even noticed, but once given the chance during a play rehearsal, he wore a dress on stage too. Give guys involved in a show any reason to wear a dress and they will.

Later that evening one Teacher commented she wished they had a male teacher to talk with the boy dancers about wearing appropriate undergarments while dancing, obviously a subject the ladies don't feel comfortable talking about with teen boys (who knew). I said over our radio's to send them to me since it is guy talk. But she quickly declined by saying "advice coming from a guy wearing a skirt, I don't think so." It was a fun night and she plans on making a poster of my pic. Well there goes any political aspirations.

While at work I come off a little conservative and serious. One lady who helps with our school productions and with this recital said she thought she knew me and was totally shocked to realize that I can shake things up. It's nice to make people second guess there perceptions of others.

Well thankfully this little episode seems to have slapped that silly thought right out of your head! :D

That is neat that you were able to turn the situation into something lighthearted, yet meaningful to yourself. Was there any speculation on where the heels came from? :heehee:

I would also think a guy in a skirt would be perfect for explaining to anyone what appropriate performance wear is. After all, clothing is a means to an end and it must be suitable for the task!

That was great thinking on your part about what to wear that night. Ladies sometime give us openngs that we do not take advanage of, and then we go regretting not having done it. Who knows what doors this might open later on? Just be ready for another little hint or quip....and maybe a reply like...I still struggle with make-up could start a whole new episode in your life.

Hi Shelby , It must have made you feel wonderful to be able to wear the skirt and shoes and not be judged by the people you work with . I hope for you in the future that you more opportunities to dress up at work and have some fun with it . Good luck Tomara

That's great Shelby, I think it's great you took took the opportunity as presented and in a light hearted way followed thru with it. It's a good thing you had the heels already.
