ooh great, check out 'hedwig and the angry inch' its a bit of a musical, if you can deal with that, great film tho. also he did another film called 'shortbus', thats not really about transsexuals but it deals a lot with alternative sexuality AND its like one of my fav/funniest films i've ever seen, if you can get past the graphic un-simulated sex its actually a really heartwarming character piece. the sex is more of a stylistic thing than a shock thing. tell me what you think if you can get hold of them

There's this spanish director called Pedro Almodovar. He has a movie called The Bad Education. It's kind of a thriller/drama. It's obviously in spanish so if you don't speak the languate you'll have to go with subtitles. It's interesting and deals a lot with gender issues since the main character is a TS.

This same director has other 2 movies that deal directly with TS issues.
One is All About My Mother (this one got an Oscar for best foreign movie). It's tagline is: Part of every woman is a mother/actress/saint/sinner. And part of every man is a woman. Guess that says it all.

Second one is High Heels. Less interesting since it's older, but deals with crossdressing more than TS.

Normal with Clive Anderson and Jessica Lange is the best in my opinion.

Trantasia is a documentary that covers a world transgendered beauty contest. Interviews with some of the participants, particularly the lovely TS woman from Chicago and her family are very enlightening. Many are bitches, but the Chicago girl's story is heartfelt and wonderful. The DVD also contains the story of Jahna Steele, a pioneering Vegas TS showgirl.

If you search any of the above, especially Trantasia or Almodovar's movies on Amazon, it'll also give you more of those "If you liked this, then you'll also like this..." choices.

I just discovered and bought TransAmerica... it was a great movie, very funny in spots yet very tragic as well. Excellent plot line.. highly realistic I thought.... left me sad but a good movie nonetheless.

The two best-done ones in my opinion are Transamerica and Boys Don't Cry.

Here's my dissenting opinion. I thought Transamerica was insulting, Normal blunt and Hedwig total trash. Hollywood is still stuck in the Myra Breckenridge era. Now, the good news: seek out Alain Berliner's Ma Vie en Rose (My Life In Pink), 1997, French, smart and true as a sunrise. I believe it's the only TG drama of merit to date. (Well, Boys Don't Cry, but that's almost too true to endure.)

Despite the previous post, I thought Transamerica was a terrific movie. I managed to forget that the star of the film was a genetic female. I wasn't insulted -- I identified with the character very much, including some of the scenes with her son.

Boys Don't Cry was also excellent.

I just watched (again) Boys Don't Cry last night - a really good movie.

Normal is an O.K. movie, not a great effort, but it did try to mainstream the subject - it was a cable movie on HBO.

I also really like Soldier's Girl. A dramatization based on the true story of Barry Winchell, a U.S. soldier who is killed by a fellow soldier in no small part due to Barry's relationship with transgendered nightclub performer, Calpernia Addams. Produced by Showtime.

And then there is the classic The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

A few that come to mind are Second Serve (based on the true story of Renee Richards, Just Like a Woman and another factually based movie is A Girl Like Me. Also, if you can find it the movie 'I Want What I Want'. You might also pursue The Christine Jorgensen movie. Theres a lot of movies out there with a CDing theme also...

I recommend "Different For Girls". Really good story line involving two boyhood schoolmates, whose paths cross later in life. One an avowed straight male, the other a transitioned female. An excellent film. You won't be disappointed.

I was gonna be quiet again, but I didn't think Transamerica was awesome either. If I watched it as a "normal" person I'm not sure I'd be sympathetic. And Hedwig is pure CAMP (like Rocky Horror)....but a lot of silly fun.

Kinky Boots is a decent film with a likable crossdresser....worth a watch.

Connie and Carla has a decent crossdresser side plot going.

You asked for TS movies - some of the responses were about movies regarding CD not TS (which is why the list is long), but they're interesting and entertaining movies anyway. :)

My vote is for Normal. It stars Jessica Lange and Tom Wilkenson as her husband and TS. The story is warm and witty, especially the acceptance of his teenaged daughter. It is mainstream but very likeable. The ending is very sweet. I cried. It is out on DVD.

Love,
Stephanie

Two of my favorite films with TS content are Soldier's Girl and Rent. Recommend both.

No one mentioned Transamerica?

That's a great Transsexual movie (A real movie with a plot, not porn)

I know they've been mentioned earlier, but I think they deserve another mention, as they are really good films.

Calliope mentioned Alain Berliner's Ma Vie en Rose (My Life In Pink), 1997, French. I imagine many of will have to read the subtitles, but it really is an excellent movie.

Several have mentioned Boys Don't Cry, another really great film - actually a "Must See."

And while it's not a movie an interesting watch is the documentary miniseries TransGeneration shown on the cable channel LOGO. I believe clips from the shows may be viewed at
